Chris Carter is a good example of why there isn’t a SINGLE former wide receiver that is a head coach in the NFL (and maybe in Division 1 college-I haven’t checked that out.) All they know is run down the field and catch the ball. Also, they only care about their individual stats in most cases.

Ask Randy Moss if he would rather be in the Hall of Fame or have 3 Super Bowl rings and I bet he’d say Hall of Fame. Same for Chris Carter. Probably the same for Deion Branch. Ask any other position player besides RBs and QBs and they’re all about winning. That’s why they make good head coaches.

Chris Carter is a clown. He proves it everytime he opens his mouth.

Except Branch is having a better year, two teams have already released Moss, twenty teams passed on Moss after the Vikings, and Branch has that SB MVP.
Ask a player if he’d rather be in the Hall of Fame or have a ring.
Do you think Moss will have regrets when he’s 50 years old and thinking about what might have been?
Moss has amazing ability, no doubt, but teams who choose players based on stats alone never go anywhere.
The answer to the question “Are the Patriots better without Moss?” seems to be, surprisingly, yes. Thanks to Branch.
T.O. and Ochocinco are probably “better” receivers with more athletic ability than Branch. So how’s that working out for the Bengals?
Calling Branch “just a guy” insults all of those players who give 100% all of the time, and make their teams better with hard work, dedication and selfless play.
Would you rather have a team with 53 guys who have Branch’s attitude or Moss’s?

Liked having Moss in New England. It was fun watching him for a few years. Now we have Branch back, and he is clicking again with Tom. NE is back to the precision offense they are so good at, and that helped them win SBs.

Carter is just plain wrong here. Sure, Deion did disappear when he wasn’t with the Pats, but just look at his numbers when he plays with Tom! Some receivers need a certain QB to get it all together, it is as simple as that.

Deion left NE looking for the big payday. He realized that was a huge mistake, and he isn’t going to let this second chance go by. Moss came to NE to try and revitalize his career, and he now knows what a huge mistake he made in leaving. He would be back in a flash if he was given the chance.

Cris is just butthurt because his ego is wrapped up in being Moss’ mentor and he probably feels it reflects badly on him when Moss fails. I never wanted Moss on the Pats in the first place so I am happy he’s gone. He did to Brady what some other high profile squeaky wheel type WRs do to their Qbs. Meaning they make those QBs do things to placate them rather than throw to the open guy. Brady’s back to HIMSELF now, not Moss’ nanny. Thank goodness. If anyone thinks that Moss didn’t have to have his ass kissed 24/7, I refer you to the CONSTANT LAVISH public praise Bill Belichick was always heaping on him. Bill Belichick has never in my entire football watching life (since the late 70s) heaped public praise on a player like that. He was placating Moss too. It was sickening to listen to really since it isn’t HIM. It was the football equivalent of catching your spouse cheating on you.

Even if Branch is “just a guy” right now it works for the patriots, they have one of the top offenses in football and have won alot of games by outscoring people.

What Cris Carter needs to understand is that the 2007 Randy Moss is gone and whether they kept him or not that wasn’t going to change, you’d have to look real hard for someone else Brady trusts as much as branch.

Good piece. Its as you say, Branch “understands his role in the Patriots offence.

Brady is the man who showed Branch his role in the Patriots offence and when he and Branch are on….. its a beautiful thing to watch.

Watch out NFL ………Brady to Branch will be something to pay attention to going forward. I have seen and remember almost every Brady to Branch throw. You all shoud watch if you want to see some of the most beautiful completions the NFL has to offer.

Branch can’t be successful unless he’s in the right system. However, he IS in the right system, and whatever crazy brain waves him and Brady share wasn’t damaged by their 3 years apart. Brady can look at branch (without all the wacky yelling and arm flapping that Peyton does) and Branch knows to change his route and where Brady expects him.

Cater and Moss are old buddies. That’s all. Anyone who would say Branch is a drop off from Moss is obviously full of it. All 3 teams have watched Moss “take a play off” and get burned by it. He sucks, period.

Moss is like a bad cold. Where ever he has gone for what ever reason the Team has fallen in time. The game is about Playoffs and Championships period. Stats are for the losers of the game, give me a Champion any time. That is what makes you great, not catching 10 balls for 160 yards in a lose during the season. Carter was much the same and could never lead his team to the glory land, lot of talk with 0 results.

What an idiot Carter is….you would have thought he would have shut his mouth after he already looked like a fool for saying “that trading Moss was the worst mistake they ever made” the day of the trade and talk about how the offense would go nowhere without him – They are the #1 offense in the league.

Bottom line, Branch is MUCH better for the New England offense….and more specifically Brady. Moss is by far a better athlete, but he was not a good route runner in the Pats timing based offense and he took Brady out of the game plan too much by trying to force the ball to him.

Pats won 3 Super Bowls by driving down the field playing small ball with winning drives with less than 2 minutes left in the game. The Super Bowl they had Moss…..Brady got the ball back with 55 seconds left and forced it Moss’s way 3 times – They lost. Against the Jets this year, they were controlling the game in the first half…then Revis goes down and Brady tries forcing it to Moss all 2nd half and they lose.

Branch fits in perfectly and is a much better fit for this offense. Nice job BB!

I think Chris Carter meant to say that Deion Branch is “just a guy… with three more Super Bowl Rings than I have.”

True, Moss is a completely different type of WR than Branch… then again, the Jets defense was assembled to stop a guy like Moss… not Branch and a lot of quick little guys who dance around bigger CBs.

Carter’s a little late with the “losing Moss makes the Patriots worse” train. That one left the station November 1st.
Branch is an excellent receiver, or at least Brady thinks so.
Branch has two rings and an MVP, accomplishments Carter will never have.
Of course Carter did have that excellent drug problem.

Comments like this make you question if Carter truly understands the game, which is hard to believe considering he was a hall of fame player. Randy Moss is the one who disappears against average defenders. Its obvious Carter is just sticking up for his friend Moss to help him get a better contract next year. I wonder if ESPN cares that one of their analysts shows so much bias towards his friends and former teammate. Oh wait, why do I even wonder that, I know ESPN doesn’t give a crap as long as their talking heads say a lot of controversial things and get big ratings. And how much of a “higher ceiling” does he want the Patriots offense to have? They are averaging a league best 30 points a game.

Branch has two more rings than Carter and was huge (double digit catches) in two Super Bowls. That’s not a bad ceiling. It is true that Branch has struggled without Brady. But he’s with Brady and that point is moot. The problem with Moss is that Brady felt pressured to get him his chances even if he was covered. Brady is better now as he is more free to just concentrate on finding the open man.
