Losing a heartbreaking game like Baltimore did on Sunday changes everything about the post-game discussion.
If Ravens safety Dawan Landry tackled Steelers running back Isaac Redman near the goal line, perhaps we’re talking about the Ravens offense “doing what it takes” to win. Instead, we have receiver Derrick Mason searching for words to describe the so-so Baltimore offensive attack.
“I might get crucified for this one, but with all these people we’ve got on offense?” Mason said via the Baltimore Sun. “We’re not a good offense at times. Just call it how you see it. Call a spade a spade. If we were a good offense, we’d move the ball up and down the field.
“Especially with the people we have and the quarterback and the personnel we have. But we’re just not a good offense at times. . . . We look like the Bad News Bears at times. And I’m a part of it.”
The Ravens are more balanced than usual this year, but they didn’t take advantage of a vintage performance from their defense on Sunday night. Baltimore is now 14th in points on the year, and 17th in yards. They are 31st in the league in yards-per-carry.
Mason was speaking with great emotion, and he was mostly right. We give him credit for talking when guys like Ray Lewis left the locker room before the media showed up. This loss left a mark on the Ravens veterans.
“You wonder why you come back and play after stuff like this,” Mason said. “Pittsburgh is a good team, but there is honestly no way we should have lost this game. This makes me wonder personally why I even came back. It hurts worse than any other game.”
