Son of Gruden spills the beans on coaching plans

Jon-Gruden-Coaching-0427

There’s a growing belief that former Raiders and Bucs coach Jon Gruden will return to the NFL in 2011.  As his son, Deuce (really?), tells it, Gruden may be targeting 2012.

Via The Big Lead, Deuce Gruden appeared on the Sporting Rave podcast, and Deuce said that the family could be heading for San Fran or Cleveland.

“He was going to let me finish high school,” Deuce Gruden said.  “They were talking about going to San Francisco, but that’ll probably be in the next two years . . . or maybe Cleveland.”

The problem is that the San Fran and Cleveland jobs may not be open come 2012.  So the Grudens may have to move now, if a job becomes available, if the price offered is right, if he gets the power he seeks, and if there’s enough labor progress to make the 49ers or the Browns willing to risk Gruden’s first year being hampered by a truncated offseason.

I can picture Chucky right now, glaring at his son.

But the son is not fazed.

‘Cuz the son knows Chucky won a title with Dungy’s boys. And Chucky was lousy from that point forward.

I hope somebody records Gruden yelling at his son. THAT would be the best soundbite of 2010.

  3. hobartbaker says: Dec 6, 2010 1:38 PM

Deuce, 27, is Gruden’s second oldest child. Just between Ace and Trey.

“The labors were long”, said Mrs. Gruden, “John would just sit around playing cards, while he waited”.

This has got to be a sham. Gruden can’t be dumb enough to have told his kid that stuff, and even if he did, his kid can’t have been dumb enough to say it out loud. To me this sounds like Gruden’s angling for another job and now we know it’s definitely not San Fransisco or Cleveland.

Deuces are wild on this report.

Gosh, I really hope that Gruden comes to San Fran and helps build up the same kind of dynasty he built with the Raiders and the Bucs….

    Oh, wait.

  7. bbb82 says: Dec 6, 2010 2:17 PM

No thanks, we don’t want him in Cleveland. We’ve had enough QB controversies.

  8. wuzupg says: Dec 6, 2010 2:20 PM

Even if he has to wait a year…with the impending labor dispute next year, the timing will be right.

  9. all4patriots says: Dec 6, 2010 2:28 PM

Tampa Bay couldn’t end the Gruden era soon enough. The perception of his coaching ability grows more the longer he stays away from coaching.

Eric Mangini has the Browns playing their best football since Bill Belichick was roaming the sidelines back in 1994.

I guess Mike Holmgren’s ego could allow him to fire Mangini and bring in his guy, but I hope Randy Lerner realizes that he has only done two things right when it comes to the Browns, and that was hiring Mangini and Holmgren. Hopefully Mangini gets to stay. He has earned it.

Mayber Gruden can add 2+2 and knows that there most likely will not be NFL next year and therefore no big signings.

That would be an angle to cover, anyone know a reporter with insight?

    Dungy won a title with Mora’s boys…

Grudens winning percentage in TB was .509. He’s barely an average head coach. Not a good coach. Not a great coach. Just about average.
I love the guy, don’t get me wrong, but he was not a great coach.

he wants to coach the raiders, but if cable make playoffs the job will not be available

@funkylovemonkey (or whatever the hell it is)…. Gruden was one bad call away from taking the Raiders to the superbowl (after a decade of being a less than average team).

And Lets not forget Dungy never even got the bucs to the NFC championship game (so to say it was Dungy’s team that won the superbowl wouldn’t be completely accurate).

How many superbowls has san fran won in the last decade?

Callahan took Oakland to the SB with Gruden’s boys.

Callahan gave Gruden his Super Bowl win. That meathead didn’t even change the plays – the Bucs knew every play that was being called in

Umm…tony dungy couldn’t win with tony dungys team. Just sayin.

  19. bigdawgy54 says: Dec 6, 2010 4:10 PM

Jon Gruden would be an excellent coach if the Browns could get him!!!
He would have had the Raiders in the Super Bowl had it not been for the bad, “Tuck Rule.”
And, the team he won the Super Bowl with in Tampa was “not” Dungy’s team on offense. Gruden made some changes including bringing in 2 offensive linemen from Minnesota. He implemented an offense that Dungy did not have. Gruden won the Super Bowl with a quarterback that was mostly just better than average. He was actually a backup at Florida State. Gruden did what Dungy could not do!
Dungy got “his” Super Bowl on the back of Peyton Manning.
Finally, how many of you know that since 2004…..the owners of the Buccaneers have spent the least on their football team than any other? Yes, Gruden had 3 losing seasons that weren’t good. But, look at the playoff hunts he had them in and the 9-7 records he produced with one of the cheapest budget in the NFL.
If the Browns fully backed Gruden with a check book, the Browns would make the Super Bowl for the first time!
    BRING GRUDEN TO CLEVELAND!!!

I do think Dungy got the Buccaneers to the NFC Championship game against the Rams. I think Brian Kelly was beaten on a pass that allowed the Rams to win.
Shaun King was the quarterback for the Bucs in that game…..Warner for the Rams.
I’m pretty sure that was an NFC Championship game.

The Niners job will be filled if he waits till 2012 and at the rate they’re playing the Browns job is pretty secure. The Detroit Lions or Buffalo Bills jobs might be available in 2012 though.

  22. Deb says: Dec 6, 2010 4:34 PM

Don’t really think Cleveland needs him. And doubt San Francisco would wait until 2012.

  23. wuznotsobad says: Dec 6, 2010 5:18 PM

Oh crap, don’t tell me we have to put up with Gruden in the MNF booth again in 2011… PLEASE, Mr. York, fire Singletary and give Gruden anything he wants!!!

  24. ckshep59 says: Dec 6, 2010 5:29 PM

He’d want too much power to come to Cleveland and I don’t want him running the draft. I like the current team with Heckert making the picks. Look at his first draft here. We need him here to make the picks, not Gruden.

Really?Did Dungy win with that team? This is one of the dumbest things people say.

You must be under the age of 3.

Dungy’s Colts won the 2007 Super Bowl over the Bears.

I think Cleveland does need Gruden. Our Browns have been winning with a good deal of “luck.”
Look at the lack of the Browns 2nd half production.
They say the players play the first half and the coaches play the 2nd half. I think the Browns are badly out coached in the 2nd half on the offensive side of the ball. Mangini seems happy with Daboll’s running the ball on practically every 1st down in the 2nd half.
I’m glad the Browns have the victories they do. However, I’m not sold that it’s because of Mangini. Rob Ryan’s defense has made the Browns look better than they are.
Gruden is Ohio born/raised. Grew up a die hard Browns fan. Played college football at Dayton. Few teams have the opportunity to acquire a coach that’s homegrown and totally understands the team’s past and present like Gruden would.
