Bill Belichick doesn’t give a [bleep] what the score is

Patriots coach Bill Belichick gathered his entire team as the fourth quarter was set to begin in Monday night’s laugher.  So what was his message?

“We’re playing for 60 minutes, I don’t give a [expletive] what the score is”, Belichick said, according to Tom Brady on WEEI Monday night via Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.

The 45-3 beatdown is one Jets coach Rex Ryan will remember.  Maybe it was a case of the Patriots trying to mentally bury the Jets.

Then again, the attitude and approach is totally consistent with how Belichick has operated throughout his tenure in New England.  And it was a message that made sense to drive home after the team struggled in the fourth quarter against the Steelers and Colts.

The score and the opponent on Monday night just made things a little sweeter for the Patriots coach.

UPDATE: Here’s more of Brady, after the game.

Queue the whiners about running up the score.

Can someone please explain to me what they are supposed to do? They were running the ball on early downs with a lead, and throwing short passes to get 1st downs. They werent chucking up hail marys.

Are they supposed to just give the ball back? Are they supposed to run the ball and stop at the 1 yard line and hand it back to the Jets players?

It looks like in the Brady vs. Belichick fight for who gets to mentor Woodhead on his post-game appearance, the game ball goes to the coach.

@tatum064 – What game were you watching? I hate the Jets as much as the next Pats homer, but they would’ve lost the game if Sanchez had a good day. Sanchez didn’t get a lot of help from his receivers either. A couple of crucial drops by Braylon “Stonehands” Edwards.

Best Head Coach and QB in the NFL !

What a great day today is to be a New England Patriot fan !

    Next up: the Bears

    Rex Ryan,

Never use the word Super Bowl and Jets in the same sentence again unless it is in reference to your players getting tickets.

    SHHHHHHHH !

  14. mrconnors says: Dec 7, 2010 11:39 AM

Weren’t the Jets still trying to score with about a minute left? They were on about the 5 yard line and threw an incomplete pass on 4th down.

Like I’ve said, everything is only an issue with the Patriots do it. Ravens and Raiders lose OTA’s, Steelers team doctors get busted with 100K worth of HGH, etc. But since it’s not the Patriots, no big deal.

One more thing, I bet all the “Belicheat” morons would be laughing if the Jets were up 45-3. Maybe the first idiot posting his reply, called Boysroll, can confirm this. Would there be a problem if the Jets were still trying to score up by 42?

I don’t think anyone really gives a rip what Rex Ryan thinks somehow a lot of the talking heads put way too much in what he has to say. He doesn’t have a SB ring on his finger as a player or a coach. The only thing he has done is make a lot of noise it reminds me of a bully. Put up or shut up.

  18. rdcameron says: Dec 7, 2010 11:43 AM

It sounds like Belichick is going back to his old ways. I love it!! People who whine about the Pats running up the score are usually fans of the teams who are getting their butts kicked by the Pats. The Jets talked ALL sorts of trash leading up to that game, and they got it handed it to them.

What? running up the score …? I really hope nobody attempts to say anything about that, other than irritated Jets fans. I’m a Steelers fan and that was just a good ‘ol fashioned beatdown. I think most Steeler fans can recall a game we had against the Patriots this season which was almost similar. Pat’s were the better team, especially coaching decisions.

Ryan attempting to challenge the ball placement was futile, wasted time. Than having his kicker attempt that 50+ field goal? What?!? The game is history – Pat’s looked to be firing on all cylinders …but with the game at 3 to 0 and Ryan trying that long field goal instead of being conservative with putting his defense in a better position ….punt the ball. Unless he knew that his punter was already not up to the task …???
The punter didn’t help out much either later as he made that 15 yard punt next to their end zone.

Bad coaching – and poor execution, Jets. Patriot’s really looked well coached & prepared.

  32. bigbaldpapahawk says: Dec 7, 2010 12:04 PM

Cheers to the Pats. If I was coaching, my team would be trying to score as long as the other team was trying to score. You can’t ask a team to lay down for you while you score a few. Defenses have pride too.

This is not Pop Warner football where you are trying to support young kids, these are grown men who get paid a mint to do what they do. So long as one team is trying to score, so should the other team.

  33. chitown26 says: Dec 7, 2010 12:04 PM

No reason not to run up the score. This is the NFL, the big boy league. If you can’t handle it, you shouldn’t be here.

    “Bellichick is classless”

No, he’s not. He’s the best NFL coach out there. He not only wins games but he mentally crushes his opponents. I guarantee Rex left last night’s game wondering wtf just happened to him.

Listen: I hate the Patriots, Bellichick and what he stands for, but you can’t argue with results. He whooped their asses last night and crushed their spirit. He exposed Sanchez for the crappy QB that he really is and nobody is really surprised about that. The Jets are overblown and overrated and he just wanted to make sure the world knew it.

  34. jameswestphal says: Dec 7, 2010 12:09 PM

Look at all the loser comments from the loser fans of loser teams. Poor clowns don’t even have the decency and self-awareness to be ashamed of yourselves.

As far as running up the score: That’s what happens when you run your mouth, I’m sure Rex would acknowledge that. Any of you that ever played a team sport at a relatively high level knows that. In high school you call off the dogs, in college or the pros you pour it on. Big boy football. The adult-virgin/basement dwellers that seem to post on here clearly don’t get that. Also, the Pats almost fell apart twice against the Colts and Chargers, so it was important to play hard all game.

this is the NFL people. its not the pats’ job to keep points off the board. that kind of sportsmanship needs to be saved for the children. once you reach the pinnacle of your sport and begin making huge contract money, its time to rely on pride and skill to win games and keep points off the board, not the opposing coaches’ penchant for mercy. grown ass men complaining that the other guy is running up the score is just disgusting to me. you’re damn
right he is! if you dont like it, stop it. if you cant stop it, quit and refuse to take the field and be embarrassed any further.
do you hear Bill Gates and Steve Jobs bickering and whining that one is trying to drive up his profit margin to embarrass the other? SHUT UP AND PLAY!!!

  37. Rhode Island Patriots Fan says: Dec 7, 2010 12:09 PM

In my opinion, there is no single message more important than this one, especially given the infusion of youth into the Patriots. The issue here is mental toughness. Historically speaking, many of New England’s losses have seen early leads squandered away in the fourth quarter.

It’s not about running up the score. It’s all about playing football for four quarters—and winning.

  42. masteel says: Dec 7, 2010 12:23 PM

I thought last night Ryan would pull out another hybrid defensive scheme …the Patriot’s are very difficult to D up when they have Branch, Welker, & 2 TE’s out on the field – along with Woodhead.

I was hoping to see from the start of the game 2 down linemen with hands on the ground 4 LB’s with 2 cheating up to the line – and 5 DB’s with one coming safety coming up to fake blitz or blitz and stunt into the middle of the off. line at the snap. I only watched the 1st half and I didn’t see any real disguise blitz schemes except during the very 1st drive by the Patriot’s when they did get Brady to throw the ball quicker. Actually the Jets D did seem to have the 46 Bears look on two of the last few snaps before the Pat’s kicked the first field goal to take the lead 3 to 0 ………..

The game was out of reach and they kept dropping back and passing, not just dumps offs to counter the run D but throwing 20 yds down field, passing on 1st and goal from within the 5, etc.

Classless and just trying to inflate stats at that point. So when somebody takes that cheap shot on golden boy you only have one person to blame Patsies. Billacheat!

All this talk of Sanchez being a crappy QB is unfounded. He’s a second year player going through growing pains. I have no doubt in my mind that he’ll do much better in his career than guys like Matthew Stafford. However, he’s not at the point of somebody like Brady who threw a 25 yard TD into the wind last night, on 4th and 3. Talk about ice in the veins.

As for that running up the score BS, it was fully deserved. I used to do some boxing, and if you were graceful and I was better than you, I won decisively but with class. If you advertised how bloody you would beat me… Well, it was a different matter. The Pats wanted to make a statement to the non believers and critics out there, and I’d say they did just that.

Falcons v Patriots SB… That’s all I want to see at this point.

  50. all4patriots says: Dec 7, 2010 12:36 PM

29 passes, 26 rushes, no deep bombs up by 30+, just posession-keeping clock-munching stick-moving short passes and runs.

And running on 4th down at the 20? Kicking an easy FG is running up the score and stopping the clock. Running the football keeps the clock running and if the opponent is game, they stop you.

I don’t see any basis for the running up the score whiny babies.

I just can’t see the Jets making a dent in the Playoffs this year, maybe 2nd round, but not a chance to win the Super Bowl with Sanchez just yet (or at all). I’m a little surprised the Jets are hovering near .500 with the way they squeeked out about half their games.

  63. smith5646 says: Dec 7, 2010 12:57 PM

When points mean something other than a win or loss, then go ahead and run up the score. Until then, here’s a thought…rather than having your starters in a meaningless game, risking injury…play some backups and get them some game time experience so when a starter does go down, the backups will have a clue about what they need to do and know about the speed of the NFL vs NCAA / highschool. True experience comes from the playing field, not the practice field. It would also give the aching starters some much needed rest to prepare for next week.

I understand you want to make sure your opponent is down for the count but the Jets scored 3 points in 3 quarters. Do you really think they are suddenly going to get their act together and score 35 in the 4th? Belichump ran up the score and karma will someday return the favor and knock him back down a notch or two…oh wait, it already did in Superbowl XLII.

That is the problem with this argument. One side looks at going for it on 4th down as the Pats going out of their way to score more points. The reality is, the opposite is true.

Look at it this way. If you kick a field goal, you are piling on points. You are calling a play, that essentially guarantees putting more points on the score board. Belichick simply calls an offensive play. If the Jets make a stop, NE doesnt score any more points. I will repeat. If the Jets defense had as much bravado as they have every other day of the week, they would have simply stuffed the ball carrier, and taken the ball back. But they gave up like chumps, and let the Pats do what ever they wanted. Dont be pissed at the Pats, be pissed at your defense

I do see the mindset of “if you arent rubbing it in, why try to convert on 4th down”. Truth is, going for it on 4th down, provides your opponent the best opportunity to keep the Pats from scoring. That is it, simple as that. “I am going to run a play on 4th down, to allow you an opportunity to keep me from scoring, rather than kick a field goal, and pile on more points”.

The Pats attempted 4 passes in the 4th qtr. Remember that the Jets have the best run defense in the league, so running it down after down after down isnt going to run out the clock.

Looks to me like Jets fans talked a lot of smack, and instead of owning it, you are deflecting the beatdown into a running up the score argument. Please. If the Jets won by 42 points you would all be on here talking about how pathetic the Pats are, etc. Just zip your lips, take the loss, and move on.

The last time your Jets won anything their alchoholic quarterback was wearing womens underwear.
Your coach is a big mouth moron, and your last coach was a big mouth moron.
Your quarterback wishes he had a woman like Bradys, an arm like Bradys, a coach like Bradys, and fans like Bradys. Instead he has you.

Any of you worried about running up a score in pro sports never made it past the JV team…Is pro sports, and most important to play 60 minutes.

Back in 2004, Brady insisted on playing final game…because football players play football.

jets, Rex and their moronic fans need to worry less about spewing their mouth and playing game on field.

  69. luvthatdirtywatah says: Dec 7, 2010 1:05 PM

Bill wasnt sending a message to Rex, he’s trying to teach a young team how to engage their inner killer instinct (athletically speaking).

Now if a message was sent to a big mouthed opponent, then so be it. Deal with it. Welcome to the Bigs.

  70. Satan's Valet says: Dec 7, 2010 1:07 PM

gypjet, so we’re clear here, your team lost, so the only way for you to feel better about it is to insult the fans of the team that beat them? Because that speaks volumes about what kind of fan you are.

I said it in another post and I’ll say it again: the 49er’s have conclusively proven that it takes more than stolen signals to win, especially when every team is out there every week trying to steal everyone else’s signals. Anyone with more than an amateurs level of experience watching football knows this.

  71. ken1313 says: Dec 7, 2010 1:09 PM

For the record…..he wasnt telling his team to run up the score…he was telling them to play hard for 60 minutes…something they have had trouble doing…alot of 4th quarter letdowns this year. It’s not anyone’s fault but the Jets’ that they couldnt stop anything

  72. habsman says: Dec 7, 2010 1:09 PM

Thanks for the memories Dandy Don.

  73. patsfiend says: Dec 7, 2010 1:12 PM

See the whole team gather around Billy B on the sideline at the beginning of the 4th? After watching them give up amazing amounts of yards and points all year in the 4th quarter, there was NO way he was going to let them get complacent. They need to learn how to finish strong, regardless of the score. That’s a young team, getting battle-hardened for the playoffs. That’s a coach right there!

Running up the score? Belicheat? Classless? Please. They threw underneath, ran Freddy, and killed the clock. You can complain about running up the score if you’re in high school, or maybe college… this is the pros, and that’s what they are paid to do. Don’t like it? Stop it, then, and maybe keep a lower sh!t-talking profile before (and during) the game.

I hope in his heart of hearts Belichick is still stricken and angry about this whole spygate nonsense and that he and Brady continue to use it to drive them to rub everyone’s noses in it until they retire. They almost pulled off the big “EFF YOU” in 2007, hopefully they’ll finish the deal this year, or in the next 3 or so years.

Barring injury to Brady, they are not going away any time soon, because they ARE the best run organization in football. Haters go ahead and hate, Pats will continue to win and show the rest of the league how to run a team / cap / draft.

Focus on your [expletive] “team” instead ya’ losers! Maybe Sanchez and all those veterans should get themselves a super model or two instead of spending their free time looking for Ryan’s stomach staple pins. Maybe that’ll help take some of the edge off.

kicking a 20 yard field goal is running up the score because its a given he makes it. Running the ball up the gut repeatedly is basically letting the other team stop you. If they cant and they really suck(like the JETS) then you keep scoring. Tough one jets fans, but its clear your not in the same class as the patriots. At this point every team in the league should be scared to play the patriots.

  82. pastabelly says: Dec 7, 2010 1:26 PM

Playing the full 60 minutes was the right move in this game for the Pats. Even in big wins over the Steelers, Colts, and San Diego, they played three quarters. While most of that was attributable to the defense letting other teams back in, Brady and the offense let up and let Indy back in the game. The right call was to go all out. That it shut up Rexy is no more than a side benefit. If this annoys Tomlinson, who calls himself “classy”, well that’s good too.

As for WEEI, they missed bleeping Brady’s expletive on the internet radio version.

NE stops passing, they might as well punt on 1st down. You can’t stop running your offense just because you might end up in the end zone. Someone’s 20 yards deep to keep the safeties back, or pull a ‘backer into coverage, not (necessarily) because Belichik wants to humiliate Ryan–though it’d do him some good.

With all the personnel changes, that team needs to play all 60 minutes. Most of them are still earning their spot on the roster.

    @ jajibokum
The Rooney’s care about football and it shows when the team takes the field. Most fans of the team show that they know something about the game.

This is the first time this season the Patriots have put together 60 minutes of solid football. They needed to show a very young football team how to do that and what happens when you stop playing hard. They need to do that every single game from this point onward. The schedule keeps on getting more difficult. Coach was just teaching them discipline and how to focus. Its just that simple. Execute each play, every single play, without fail.

  107. stanjam says: Dec 7, 2010 4:28 PM

There is no running up the score in the NFL. This isn’t pewee football. When it comes to tie breakers quality of wins can matter. Also you NEVER let another team off the hook. You do not give your biggest rival hope, or let them talk about how they started to get things together and come back. You crush them, you punish them, you take away any hope they have of EVER beating you if you can.

Yeah, the Pats are classless for running it up eh? What do you call a coach who goes on the air multiple times during the week saying “The best team is gonna win, and we are the best team.” THAT is classy? No, that just gives your opponent motivation to show you just how much BETTER they are than you.

I think everyone has it wrong. This wasn’t about running up the score, this was about getting a young defense to play hard for 60 minutes.

Everyone criticizes the Patriots defense for ranking last (or 31st) in yards allowed. Yet those numbers have been completely skewed by the games in which the Patriots have had large leads. They led Cincy 31-3 and then played prevent as Cincy rolled up well over 400 yards in garbage time. Same thing against Miami. They the Dolphins 41-14 but Miami went over 400 yards. They led San Diego 20-3 in the 4th quarter before the Chargers used an onside kick to storm back. Everyone who watched the Steelers game saw how well our defense played. They dominated Pittsburgh as we raced to a 24-3 lead. Then we went prevent and the Steelers ended up with more than 400 yards. Same thing vs the Colts.

The Patriots rank near the bottom of the league in yards allowed b/c they’ve given up a ton of yardage in garbage time of games they’ve had huge leads in. Part of this is due to playing prevent defense and part of it is due to young players shutting it down and getting sloppy when they think the game is in hand.

With that being the case, Belichick’s emphasis MUST be on getting these guys to stay sharp for a full 60 minutes. The fact that this also equates to rubbing it in on the Jets and their trash talking coach is just icing on the cake.

  116. robf2010 says: Dec 8, 2010 7:17 AM

I was disputing Florio’s and Belichick’s claim that he doesn’t care what the score is. When he’s way ahead, he wants his team to play a full 60 minutes. When he’s behind by a lot, he quits. If he doesn’t care what the score is, why doesn’t he want his team to play a full 60 minutes when he’s hopelessly behind?

Could not agree more with that comparison.. Having watched that game, i actually felt sorry for the skins fans that was embarrassing how the defense played. The pats just straight up out-schemed the jets and their gameplan worked to perfection. So nobody should be whining about running up the score when clearly the jets let it happen with poor execution, and terrible QB play. It’s not like the pats had amazing field position either.. We drove down the field twice when we were backed up, especially after the two picks… Stop whining pansies and take ur beatings like you usually do

  122. bosjon says: Dec 11, 2010 6:56 PM

These are professional football players. The job for the offense is to score, and the defense to stop the other team from scoring. Feelings and “rubbing it in” don’t factor in. Every possession has a purpose and teams that take any possession lightly don’t win championships. Taking the foot off hte accelerator never should be seen in the NFL. Both sides, winning or losing, should be working to do their job every time they are on the field.
