Favre’s streak won’t be extended with a one-snap cameo

Leslie Frazier

The 297-game regular-season Ironman streak of quarterback Brett Favre hangs in the balance.  And the Vikings won’t thumb the scales for him via a ceremonial appearance.

Peter King of SI.com asked coach Leslie Frazier whether the Vikings would give Favre a courtesy snap on Sunday, and Frazier didn’t hesitate.

“No,” Frazier said. “I wouldn’t do that.  We wouldn’t do that.  And I can tell you Brett wouldn’t want it that way.  That isn’t what Brett’s about.  Whoever’s writing that or saying that . . . it’s just not the way we do things.  I can tell you this:  If we decide to play Brett, it’s with the mindset that he’ll play the game, and play well.”
It’s unclear whether Favre will indeed play.  The fact that he has fought through so many injuries in the past creates a sense that he’ll find a way to play despite this one, too.  But this one — a shoulder injury — could be worse than the others.

“He can bring his arm back to start the throwing motion,” Frazier said, “but when he brings it forward through the motion, there is tremendous pain. . . .  This injury is different than the other ones he’s had.  The pain is different.  I don’t know if he can play.  We’ll have to see how he does [Friday] and make a determination.”

Favre has not yet practiced this week.  If he can’t play, Tarvaris Jackson will get the nod for the 5-7 Vikings.

Didn’t Jackson throw three interceptions after he came in for Favre? Is he old, injured, and washed-up, too? Just wondering.

  2. thebigtexas says: Dec 10, 2010 1:23 PM

Didn’t Favre give Michael Strahan a courtesy sack for the single-season record? I’d imagine the Ol’ Junkslinger being just fine with courtesy snaps.

  3. pittsburghsteelerz says: Dec 10, 2010 1:24 PM

Peyton would play one snap… what a punk.

  4. foobarfoofoo says: Dec 10, 2010 1:25 PM

Brett also wouldn’t want to give the sack record to the five-dollar-footlong-guy on a ceremonial play.

    Never.

  5. stevo8drum says: Dec 10, 2010 1:26 PM

Yes…. in order to keep the INT streak going he’ll have to throw it 1 time too.

  6. cletusvandam says: Dec 10, 2010 1:27 PM

so instead Favre will handoff 3 times then leave the game

“No,” Frazier said. “I wouldn’t do that. We wouldn’t do that. And I can tell you Brett wouldn’t want it that way. That isn’t what Brett’s about.

Favre is just about the team and not himself…. that is why he wouldn’t show up to training camp and retired 10 years in a row.

  8. medialovesthecowboys says: Dec 10, 2010 1:32 PM

T-Jack must really suck. Although he looked fairly good last week. (But I’ll bet Stoney Case could throw on this years Bills D) Seriously though, its almost as if they’re willing to do anything but play him.

  9. delshofner says: Dec 10, 2010 1:34 PM

“Brett wouldn’t want it that way”.

Yeah, and Brett wouldn’t just lay down to get a DE the sack record either.

  10. hobartbaker says: Dec 10, 2010 1:34 PM

Favre isn’t into “one snap cameos”. He tried it last week and it was his shoulder that snapped.

  11. jesusjustletmeregister says: Dec 10, 2010 1:38 PM

Favre wants no part of a phony record. That’s funny, Frazier must have forgot about Favre getting “sacked” by Strahan.

  12. 54bear55 says: Dec 10, 2010 1:39 PM

“Brett wouldn’t want it that way. That isn’t what Brett’s about.” Is this the same Brett that rolled over for his buddy Strahan a few years ago?

  13. CT Pats Fan says: Dec 10, 2010 1:41 PM

Not that I particularly like Favre, but considering the gift “sack” he gave to Strahan to earn the sack record years ago, I wouldn’t have a problem if he was given the “start”.

    Is that just me?

CT Pats Fan – I agree with you, Frazier says Brett wouldn’t want it that way, but we are talkn about a guy who called off his offensive line and winked strahan to a record setting sack. I don’t believe Frazier statement holds water & I wouldn’t be surprised if he plays the 1st series then exits…Jackson poses more problems for the Giants than Favre does.

  17. timmaygo says: Dec 10, 2010 1:55 PM

How come no one seems to remember that Favre has already done this! Yet no one seems to talk about it. It was back in 97-98 or something like that on MNF against the Vikings…..Favre came in, took the first snap, handed it off, and didn’t play the rest of the game.

His streak is a joke! It has been for years and no one seems to remember this.

Without the pressure of the streak, Goodell can exercise the punishment easily, and will.

Everyone bashes the crap out of LeBron because he left his city, the town that he grew up in yada yada yada. They said he wasn’t loyal, did it the wrong way, betrayed his fan base..

Brett has been nothing but a Legend, stuck it out in Lambo and won a championship. He has had countless memorable games and countless amazing throws. He has been a great image for the sport for a couple of decades….. and this is how he is treated. Got tossed from Green Bay, betrayed by fans, and know and the end of his career he has to deal with all this BS. Fans questioning his motives, questioning his integrity even his amazing streak.

I for one think he deserves the benefit of the doubt 1000 times over, he’s earned it. These Viking “fans” that are calling for his head are the same fans that sang his praises last year.

Learn to respect the players like Favre that have made the best game in the world as popular as it is. As a die-hard Dolphin fan I remember Marino struggling his last couple of years, though it was tough to watch he had earned the right to play until he decided it was time but Jimmie Johnson didn’t approve. Ended up retiring in an uncomfortable fashion. We havent seen anything close to Marino in our city since. Dont think we will in my lifetime either. But I for one didn’t take it for granted for a second. Neither should you.

Agreed jblazeandem. Favre isn’t mobile enough – especially now – to escape Big Blue’s big D. If they bring that D to Minny that is. NYG’s history with the Vikes is sketchy at times but that’s mainly the offense’s fault. BUT, they’re remembering the beatdown at the end of last season and smell blood in the water this week. I wouldn’t want to be the MN QB across that scrimmage line…

Let’s face facts here, BrINT shouldn’t have started the last 5 or 6 games for the Jets but he did to the benefit of his streak and the detriment of the Jets. If BrINT can even pretend like he can throw it, he will be under center this Sunday.

I will predict that if he doesn’t start, he will retire by going on IR to avoid any consequence of his sexting conduct. Like other Vikings, they feel like the league rules don’t apply in Minnesota and breaking them is fine as long as you don’t have to suffer the consequences. As if 5-7 is suffering enough already.

All these well-deserved comments just reflect what a fall from grace the Queen Favre has had. Yes, the announcers (Gruden and ESPN) still have a bromance with him but the real fans have been tired of his incredibly selfish and massive ego for years. He doesn’t care about his teammates, just the almighty streak. Favre is one of the most hated players in the NFL and all of sports now.

perv and southbeachtalent are right. Favre hasn’t done anything that many other players, Bill Parcells, Dick Vermeil, and now Urban Meyer haven’t done. He’s had a difficult time deciding whether or not he wants to retire.

It’s obvious to anyone with half a brain that he loves his job. So what if he waffles about whether or not he wants to come back? So what if he doesn’t want to go to camp? Clearly he’s not alone or Goodell wouldn’t be using that as a bargaining chip in negotiating w/the NFLPA for an 18-game season. When he was winning for them, the Pack, Jets, and Vikes fans loved having him around. And granadafan, why don’t you ask his teammates how they feel about him? Anyone can see he’s not hated by most players.

    @mrreffs420 …

Thank you! Just saw you answered my post about T-Jack. Nice to get a realistic assessment from someone who’s had the opportunity to observe his performance. People keep acting as though, by Favre starting, he’s keeping someone with Rodgers-like talent on the bench. I was pretty sure if that were true, people wouldn’t keep flying to Hattiesburg begging Favre to come back. Great QB talent is hard to come by in the league. That’s why fewer than half the 32 teams have great QBs. Would be surprised if Jackson could take the Vikes to the next level.
