Patriots’ Brandon Spikes suspended four games

The New England Patriots will play the last four games of the regular season without rookie linebacker Brandon Spikes.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Spikes has been suspended and has decided not to appeal so that he can serve his suspension immediately and return for the playoffs.

Spikes tested positive for a substance that is banned under the league’s policy on steroids and related substances.

Spikes has played in all 12 games this season, starting eight. He has 61 tackles.

UPDATE: Spikes released the following statement: “I’ve been contacted by the NFL and informed that I will be suspended 4 games for the detection of an illegal substance in a drug test. The substance was a medication that I should have gotten clarification on before taking. It was not a performance enhancer or an illegal drug. The integrity of the game is very important to me. I understand the league’s ruling and apologize to my teammates, the fans and the Patriots organization for this mistake.”

  1. What’s this? The Patriots cheating? Wow, stop the presses.

Maybe the AP should vote Spikes for Def POY, since that’s the new standard.

Rodney Harrison and now Brandon Spikes, nice, good to know the Pats defense is up to the same old ways.

  2. OUCH – stop using banned substances please.

You’re required to be smarted than that on a Belichick coached team.

  3. Testing positive for a banned substance other than steroids (HGH is not tested for) has the strong implication of a recreational drug — hardly performance-enhancing (ie, cheating).

  4. it’s amazing how people can’t be troubled to read an entire 100-word blog post, but have plenty of time to post their inane drivel in the comments section.

I’m glad he’s suspended because my Packers will need every bit of help they can get in order to hang with the Pats — but the post clearly states it’s not a steroid thing.

This is not Brian Cushing redux, guys. Taking a bong rip is not “cheating.” Just incredibly stupid for an NFL player.

  5. “The integrity of the game is very important to me.”

The suspension will give him time to make more wonderful home movies for us all to enjoy!

  6. “Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Spikes has been suspended and has decided not to appeal so that he can serve his suspension immediately and return for the playoffs.”

Hmmn, the news just said that he WAS appealing.

  7. Is this why he dropped in the draft???

I don’t follow Pats close enough to know how important he is to their defense? Didn’t they also just waive Pierre Woods? Are they in trouble at LB? Mayo is a player…Guyton & Banta-Cain don’t strike me as particularly special; players. Who else do they have?

Was this the guy with the sex tape?
    ——————————————————

Yeah. Possibly dubage and a side of meth may have been involved.

And BTW great timing, way to bring a team riding high down, retard (Not you, I mean Spikes)

  9. Shocking. Got to wonder how much other Pats cheating went into that 42 point blowout win over the Jets. Only way the Pats are ever going to stop cheating is if the NFL starts vacating wins

  10. It’s probably a medicine that you need permission to use in the NFL, even with a prescription. This would include some asthma medications, painkillers, and stimulants used for ADHD.

  11. Seriously how hard is it to make sure 100% everything you’re taking is legit? I mean to loose 4 games is a serious chunk of change.
Just go to the trainer and say “hey is this fine?” and if he says yes, then you have a case to appeal.

Yes, in college. He’s been a bit of a disapppintment, and I doubt he’ll be on the squad in 2011.

By the way, to all you “haters” out there; Spikes is far from the first player suspended this year, he wasn’t even the first TODAY. Check the roster of your favorite team and see if it is free of even one single player who has ever been suspended for this.

    Pats are cheaters once again.”

Yes! The whole team are cheaters! They all use the same substance (that ain’t gatorade boys!) and practice shooting each other up instead of executing plays. Belicheck has a CVS double platinum card since he hands out drugs like candy. They all carry FLIP cameras while in the huddle to steal signals too. The Patriots all have devil-horns while every other player and coach in the league have nothing but halos.

That was the best comment ever!

  14. since nobody knows anything about medicine or football i will attempt to crack this case. it was most likely a medication that contained small amounts of steroids. for example things like asthma medications and nasal sprays both contain steroids. players are allowed to take these if they clear it with the nfl first. he never cleared it with the nfl, now he pays the price.

  15. There was already red flags with all the “tape” situation. Its stunning really, the patriots love to draft high character, work ethic type of guys

  16. From his lawyer written statement: “The substance was a medication that I should have gotten clarification on before taking. It was not a performance enhancer or an illegal drug. ”

Uh huh. That’s what ALL the cheaters say (well, some say they just work out too hard). If, and that’s a big if, it was a “medication” and he was really innocent, he would have fought tooth and nail. What a joke. The NFL should tack on an extra two games for every blatant lie released to the media.

  17. the integrity of game is important??? thats why that dude was seen sticking his fingers into a opponents eyes at florida? because integrity is so important to him

  18. Ahaha, all the hillbillies come back out of the woodwork.

“Them old Patriots been cheetin again, momma!”

  19. People I don’t think you can have it both ways.

Either he was A. using a banned substance and the league suspended him for trying to gain a competitive advantage. Which is cheating and I agree with you all who say that.

Or he was using Marijuana which is a recreational drug and not competitive advantage.

Those of you who called him a cheater and said he used marijuana are just plain wrong.

By the way great job of speculating on the marijuana use. No where was it said in the article but yet so many have posted he was using it. Hmmmm… where you guys there with him????

This is a pretty stupid statement. The Pats just flat out kicked the Jets butts. And by the way, I’m a Jets fan.

  21. Hysterical. A Patriots player gets suspended for an unnamed “banned substance” and the trolling morons come out of the woodwork about “cheating”. It is so utterly stupid it is mindboggling.

You bozo’s know that there are hundreds of substances on the banned list, including “medications” like Sudafed and Actifed, right?

Of course you didn’t. You will just make yourselves look like bitter, pathetic, jealous clowns by running here with “cheating steroids” drivel.

    It’s pathetic.

  22. How about we actually wait to hear what he was banned for before jumping to conclusions?

I guess that’s what happens when the Patriots continue to be the best organization in the NFL.

  23. This is good news for Pats fans….

Good news that all these bitter, miserable, whining, crybaby haters at least all have something else obsurd to get their little panties all in a bunch about now lol. I was getting sick of the “Brady’s Hair” comments and the “Brady asks for penalty flags and gets them” foolishness.

At least some of their ridiculous comments will be fresh now. I am not going to pass judgement on these idiots though…..because an old wise man once told me something, he said – “son….if you were rooting for a sh!t bag team that got their asses handed to them for a decade straight by another team….and that team continued to be better at just about everything (draft, regular season, playoffs, superbowls etc.) than your team…..wel…well then maybe you would become a bitter, miserable, moronic hating retard too…..”

  24. “Hysterical. A Patriots player gets suspended for an unnamed “banned substance” and the trolling morons come out of the woodwork about “cheating”. It is so utterly stupid it is mindboggling.”
    ^^^^^
Based on the comments on this and recent articles, it’s become more and more clear that the haters know something special is occurring in New England and that we may indeed be on the cusp of Patriots Dynasty # 2.

It’s just their natural defense mechanism. I don’t take it personal. Really, they have nothing else left. It’s gotta be a pretty empty existance.

  25. Wow, here we go.. the pre school jabbing begins. A patriot can’t sneeze and the WHOLE team is cheating.. Wow.. Once again people with the brain size of a flea that are jumping to conclusions. Let me guess.. hating the best team in the nfl BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFL and they beat your stupid loser team?? ok idiots.. they wouldn’t SUSPEND HIM AND THEN ANNOUNCE IT if they were trying to cheat. Get over yourselves and start looking at your team. Im sure there are plenty of losers and users on your perfect team too.

What kind of moron would say something like this? It seems like some people reply to these stories just to show what an ignorant “sport fan” is.
Grow up pal get a life and stop being the looser you are.

  28. Wow, the Patriot headlines here really bring out the idiots. I guess when you have nothing substantial to say negatively about the Patriots you’re reduced to name calling and break out the old spygate jokes.

    10-2 biznatches.

  29. One would tend to think, that the players can read, but that’s debatable, isn’t the list of banned substances actually a LIST. Be it over the counter medication, prescription drugs, or street corner buys. Here’s the list, don’t take any of them, or is that too freakin simple? Or maybe the NFL just spins a wheel, on the banned list this week is……Sudafed, thanks for playing…

What this rant about “name calling” you were whining about, bowdowntoatruepimp “. Perhaps you shouldn’t whine, then call people “biznatches”. Hypocrisy. Look it up in that book called the Dictionary.

  34. Of course we have all the pats haters saying o pats cheating again blah blah blah shut the hell up get over it….. Plus I really hope he’s telling the truth

  35. At least he didn’t pull an R. Palmero and say “It was that midget Woodhead. He was smokin some weird smelling cigarette, & kept blowing the smoke in my direction.”

  36. Listen to Pats fans – cough medicine. Freaking completely hilarious.

Hey – maybe he’s pregnant, or has tumors?? Have you thought of that Pats fan?

  37. #polegojim says: Dec 10, 2010 3:56 PM

“You’re required to be smarted than that on a Belichick coached team.”

    Exactly.
Belichick expects you to not get caught.

  38. The Chicago Bears running attack just got a boost for Sunday’s game. If Brandon Spikes doesn’t have the common sense to get “clarification” before ingesting any medication, then maybe he shouldn’t be playing for the New England Patriots.

  39. It is amazing how many people do not understand the first thing about football. First spygate brought out all of the people who are completely ignorant about the history of football, and supposedly think that teams do not try to get away with LOTS of things they otherwise shouldn’t. Look up the history of Al Davis for a while. The guy WROTE THE BOOK on cheating!

Now a bunch more come out screaming that the Pats are cheating again! Please. Try to understand the subject you are talking about. This is a rookie who should have gotten a med cleared and didn’t. There is no need to take enhancers that get caught in a screen in this league when you can get ones that aren’t tested for.

Besides, all the policy has done is pushed drug use down to younger and younger players where they don’t test. High School usage is rampant.

  40. Jeez guys, I just got home from work and looked at this. I see the kids still get out of school before me with all their non-sensical drivel. What he took was not mentioned but I am sure it will be over the next few days. Knock off the Hating and post something relevant, like this may help my team or hurt the Pats. Not a Pats fan but lets get real here, they are on a hot streak at the right time.

  41. I love all you haters calling the Pats cheaters. Denial and jealousy are ugly when on such a typical display. Keep hating because the Pats will keep winning, and if you ain’t cheatin you ain’t tryin!!!!

  42. The sign above the locker room door that all the Pats players slap as they head out the door to the field: “If you ain’t cheatin’ you ain’t tryin’.”

Looking at all these Pat fans crying and whining because someone is calling them cheaters is music to my eyes.

    Keep crying .

    ————————————————–

Looking at haters like you fills me with Christmas cheer.

Keep hating while Tom Brady keeps winning 🙂

  44. Yeah, Andyprough, Brandon Spikes was a 42 point difference for the Patriots.

    Putz.

Still mad about that 39-26 beatdown? Two things in life are certain. The sun will rise, and the Patriots will pound the Steelers into submission.

  45. Ok some of you Patriot fans, let’s not get too self-righteous here. Some of you who are chiding the people who are getting their digs in on this story are the exact same people who engage in the exact same behavior on other team’s stories.

  46. Apparently the kid was unaware that some of the meds he was taking were wrong. when made aware of that and the resulting suspension he fessed up, made a statement about that, apologized for the fuss and said he would serve the sentence.

What’s wrong with that? I like the kid.

FYI – I didn’t read any of the previous posts because i knew that you idiotic Patriot haters would just JUMP ALL OVER THIS because you NEVER miss a chance to show once again what fools you are.

    Pats 28 Bears 13

  47. Pats haters (and i know you are legion) – they have been at or near the top for 10 years and counting, currently they have the BEST record in the NFL, they have 22 1st or 2nd year players on their 53 man squad, they have 7 choices in the 1st 4 rounds of next year’s draft and there will of course come the day when they won’t be so DOMINANT but that day is a long way away and one would think that by now you would have gotten used to it.

    Arrogant? Of course.

Rumors that they have always cheated – any proof? None.

Obnoxious fans (Like me) who like to write posts like this to try to piss you off? You betcha!

Like I said – you better get used to it because it ain’t gonna stop any time soon.

Unless you show a modicum (look in the dictionary) of intelligence.

    That is non-negotiable

  48. You guys are aware that he could have taken Sudafed or one of any number of other cold medicines and tested positive, right? At least he didn’t make up some BS excuse like Cushing, who totally has a tumor.

  49. Whatever it is… it is.

This will be a big loss for the Patriots. Something they can overcome but still a big loss. He has been a physical presence in the middle of the line and a compliment to Mayo.

I just hope when we get him back for the playoffs it is at the same level of play.

Also, to the Patriots haters out there… how sweet would it be to see them win a Super Bowl after getting rid of Moss? Who wouldn’t relish watching that piece of garbage stew in his juices as he realizes he shot his way out of a good thing to end up on the Vikings?!? Er… Titans?!?

    Patriots in 2010 (Well… 2011 Super Bowl)!

Moss on the unemployment line 2010 (Well… 2011)!

XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX still celebrating, still happy, you can’t bring me down!

  50. It was not a performance enhancer or an illegal drug.

so why are go may people calling him a cheater?

  51. Pats fans just don’t want to admit that they have a crappy football tradition of cheatin’ and it will be with them as long as billichik is the head coach.

Tom Brady should be suspended for being involved with “Ugg” boots. He’s just making it too easy now :/
    ________________________________
    Too funny! 😀

I’m a Pats fan and I will say that whatever the reason, Spikes is a pinhead in this case for sure. When in doubt, CHECK IT OUT, dude. When you don’t despite the fact you probably have been told by your team eleventybillion times you need to check everything you put into your system, YOU are to blame even if the substance isn’t steroids. It makes me think he KNEW whatever it was was banned and chose to take it anyway. Or he is a major derp fest. Or both.

I am not willing to ASSUME it is either cough medicine or steroids though.

  53. All the hate for the Patriots continues to reinforce how dominant they are. It’s the perfect definition of envy, which is rampant in todays society and this blog. If the Patriots were the worst franchise in the league instead of being the best, would people still hate on them? Nope. All these faceless people that hide behind their login names that spew nothing but hate and jealousy is really quite sad. It’s a shame so many people are so unhappy with their own lives that they spend so much time spewing hateful comments behind the security of their computer instead of trying to actually accomplish something positive and find happiness.

  54. …to all the Patriot haters throughout the world –

Is that all you have now? Are jealousy and envy why you continually bring up the “cheating” card? Don’t fool or kid yourself that these types of things haven’t gone on in the league since its inception…whether it’s taping opponents or taking medicine…the only reason Goddell didn’t investigate further in 2007, is that he knew this would be bad for the NFL – many different teams have gotten away with these things and NOT gotten caught…he would have had to investigate every single team throughout the history of the league at that point, and was probably afraid of what he might find…so get off of your pity-party and loathing for this great team…I guarantee your team doesn’t qualify for “sainthood” in it’s entire existence – so let it go! Move beyond your lack of a superbowl caliber team and stop waving the “cheat” card…it’s old, it’s a weak argument (for the above reasons), and makes you sound unintelligent – it’s like me saying the Giants cheated in SB42 because there’s NO way they should have won that game – if you don’t like the Patriots, that’s ok – but to keep trying to build a case against a truly great organization using this type of rhetoric is complete nonsense! EVERY team has had its issues and problems, and has been disciplined (or had to discipline players) for one reason or another…enough talk of the past – let the teams play!

    Grossly

  55. In response fact the Pts have been caught cheating before, fact if there is steroids in the medicine you can take more than prescribed or other steroids and blame it on the ADHD medicine…Fact either way he should have had it cleared to begin with and if hes innocent he should appeal, I know I would as would most others who have truly done nothing wrong…and believe me Im not jealous of the Patriots one bit…my team has the most trophies in our case and the most rings in the history books! I live in a house divided both my husband and daughter are Patriot fans and my son and I Steeler fans…yeah yeah no love loss I have heard it before! But talk about people not letting things go or being unfair, in the last two weeks our opponents have put their hands , face masked late hits etc. all over our quarterback and when its brought to the attention of the refs they blow it off saying that they are just trying to bring you down, I do believe theres a great of cheating on several teams! Should make for an interesting post season your team is ranked 1st in the AFC mine 2nd…we need work on our offensive line and injuries are killing us! hope our teams meet again! I agree let the teams play, hard hits and all..its football not soccer, they know the risks when they step on the field and thats why they get paid the money they do! Most recievers will agree rather take a hit to the upper body even hemet to hemet vs carrer ending shot to the kness! Roger Godells way of trying to control who goes to the superbowl and who does not should it come down to suspending players for their hits..well certainly my opinion!
