I think we can read between the lines here and conclude that although Spikes may claim to have had a legitimate reason for taking adderall, its highly unlikely that he also had a legitimate prescription for it. If he did have a script, his agent would be screaming that fact from every mountaintop from Foxboro to Finland.

In addition, those of you who claim that adderall is not a drug of abuse are naive. Not only is it highly addictive, it has the same effect on the brain and body as cocaine, and does not require a very high dose - nor for that matter does it necessarily need to be crushed, snorted etc. - to have these effects. While adderall certainly helps those with severe ADHD, it also "helps" those who wish to gain a competitive edge in academia and in athletics.

Last, those of you who claim that the drug does not induce a "high" are patently incorrect. Adderall is an amphetamine, and as such it stimulates the production and retention of dopamine, which is one of the main "pleasure" neurotransmitters in the human brain.

That fact that Spikes appears to have acknowledged that he took an amphetimine without simultaneously claiming that he had a legitimate prescription for it seems to validate the decision by the NFL to suspend him for four games.

If I were Belichick or Kraft, I would be watching Spikes very closely from this day forward. Adderall abuse can lead very easily to addiction and dependency, and could not only short circuit Spikes' career, but also ruin his life.

What is it with some of you people? ADHD is real. It is not a joke and severe enough can impair you for life. I take the same meds and they work. Without them i am a true scatter brain. Well that's pretty much true anyway, but, Spikes stood up and took it like the pro he is. As for the whole team, grow up folks. A few of you would declare them Satan's spawn if you could get away with it.

Look I love the Pats, some of you don't. So be it and so what. It is the love of the game, no the team of the game. If you do not like the Pats fine. Just try to be realistic and really, try to be clear and not use such obscure terms and remarks as to make yourselves appear foolish. It's much easier to cheer on your team and be passionate. Just don't be stupid. I know how dare I. Well as one actor once said, "stupid id as stupid does. Run Forrest, Run!

Guys I love a bargain as much as anyone and I used to love all the cheap stuff I could find on eBay, but Nowadays it seems so hard to find anything cheap over there and just when we’re all finding it tougher to just pay our bills. I don’t give up so I was looking for someplace online where I could still find myself a bargain…and by accident I came across this site I never heard of before where you get rock bottom prices. I mean I was worried about scams but this stuff is actually real and I got some real cheap stuff there…it’s become my new eBay lol! Go to Wikibidz.com

sorrypats: Kansas game?? Have the Pats been drugged for the last 10 years? Getting "jacked" doesnt help with interceptions, passing or kicking. This isnt to say there isnt a PED problem in the NFL. I dont think this suspension should have happened!

Can't you people tell that almost all the Pats are using some type of amphetamine. The ADHD is just a cover for the actual amphetamine. Since the Kansas game the Pats have been completely jacked.
The NFL is becoming the "best drugs win" league.
The Steelers and the Ravens are the biggest steroid user. A lot of the teams use growth hormone, it helps in recovery. Let's see if they have the guts enough to leave the truth out for everyone to see.

I am amazed at how many of you think your specialists with degrees in the field of psychology.
I have ADHD as do many people. I am sixty two and have had this since I was about 3 but like so many never knew about the terminology.
Spikes did get screwed but that seems to be the way that the NFL does things these days. They act and then never think about it. Or is it they just never think and do whatever they want. One way or the other this was a travesty.

As for this disease not being real..... Sometimes it is easier to spout off about what you don't know to cover up what you don't know but in any case your dead wrong.
I have never heard so many people cry foul because the Pats beat their teams. We are now the youngest team in the league and it still makes no difference we are still the best. Can't deal with that..............too bad.

This suspension should never have happened. Adderall is NOT simply "speed" Nor does the typical dose have the same effects as "speed". One has to take more that the usually prescribed dosage for it to have the same effects as "speed". It would be easy to test for the level of the banned chemical in players with ADHD. Exceeding that level would be grounds for suspension.

Wow, 70+ responses that all say the NFL is wrong for banning him for using ADHD medicine. You jackwads apparently don't know or care that it's only a Pats sportswriter who said that, and presumably got his info directly from Spikes' agent, since THE NFL WON'T EVER RELEASE THE SPECIFIC SUBSTANCE THAT WAS A VIOLATION OF THE POLICY.

I didn't buy Cushing's excuses, and I don't buy Spikes'.

That "ADHD Medicine" is Adderall, which is a Pharma-name for Amphetamine (which of course is most commonly known as "Speed").

Brandon Spikes failed a drug test for Speed, essentially.

Actually, Lame (good name for you), I'm the one always telling wet-behind-the-ears jerks like you stop judging people you don't know. So save the holier-than-thou garbage for someone else.

Sandwiched in with my nearly 30 surgeries were a lot of medication experiments. I've spent most of my life getting by on little sleep, so I don't find that terribly impressive. My brief Adderall adventure was forgettable. Buzz? To a woman who's been prescribed every narcotic from oxycontin to oxycodone to morphine ... adderall isn't much of one.

I'm afraid I don't know a rapist QB and stroking isn't my function. But based on your completely uncalled for, rude, and smarmy post to me, I'd say you're quite the wanker.

In Spikes case I think he uses it to allow him to focus more and prevent himself from flying off the handle into a pre-psychotic rage on the field

... so I'm all for him getting off it 4 weeks before the playoffs.

It's the other playoff-bound teams that are cursing Goodell... this should be interesting!

Actually, the buzz off a 30mg XR is quite satisfying. I've never gotten so much done or needed sleep so little. It makes me want to smoke a lot, and I can't eat anything and wouldn't want to if I could. It's pretty much the miracle drug. It combines weight loss with massive efficiency.

Again, your spouting off at the mouth about something you PERSONALLY know nothing about. Unless you've taken it, which I doubt you EVER would given your holier-than-thou personality, then you're full of sh!t. Not a surprise at all though.

@dumbaseinstien Count me in the chorus of those who have been (successfully, btw) treated for ADD using Adderall who are telling you to sit down, shut up, and think before you talk again about stuff you don't get. Seriously.

@Deb keeping the above in mind, I agree with you - I do think that in a number of cases, ADD *has* been overdiagnosed. And don't forget parents who DO need to discipline their kids a bit more (although not necessarily by smacking them upside the head)....

@ Deb
"Adderall’s an amphetamine, not a narcotic. He wouldn’t get a buzz from it–just jittery. In patients with ADHD, it actually slows them down … makes them less hyper. If he doesn’t have ADHD, it would act like speed … or an appetite suppressant. But it wouldn’t be a fun recreational drug."

They don't always have to be fun to be recreational.

How long does it take for Brandon Spikes to screw in a lightbulb

Mark Sanchez went to screw in a lightbulb, but he gave it away four times and then went home instead.

@DumbassEinstein etc-
I think everybody has ADD tendencies, that's why the drugs work on all those college students during finals. It becomes a disease when the tendencies interfere with daily life for a period.
I do agree that lazy parents and teachers probably use it as a go-to excuse for their more difficult kids-and would rather drug them than put the effort in to teach them discipline to overcome this.
There's prolly not a lot of ADD-ADHD guys on meds in the NFL, because I think they'd either have overcome it themselves through resolve and discipline or have developed a long term habit of taking the easy way out and not fighting harder, which would make them long odds for Pro Football.

I could be wrong, and by all means, correct me if I am wrong, but does anyone else thinks this screams of some sort of discrimination? I am almost certain that the Americans with Disabilities Act has to come into play somewhere here.
Unfortunately all of the gibberish I am thinking is moot, if in fact, the guy was not using it for ADHD and perhaps went on an all-nighter... This drug is not the new "Super-drug" of college campuses for nothing. If there are disbelievers out there, pop a 15mg, call me in the morning and tell me just how clean your house, garage, car, and neighbor's driveway are...
(For those of you that have done it, you are silently smirking to yourself now, thinking... He's right..Ha)
However, back to my point, if the kid is legitimately diagnosed with ADHD, then he needs his meds.... I am certain that most injuries require some narcotics to relieve the pain... no suspensions there, huh #4?

Ive got to say on this.

I understand ADHD. I was diagnosed with it through out school. As a child its hard to deal with. I had to take my Ritlin everday for 10+ years. When I turned 18 though, I stopped taking it.

When your a grown adult, you have more control over your thoughts and such, that you don't need medication anymore. I went into the Marine Corps, and I had a few relapses but nothing that I couldn't over come. SO I must say that he must either, be in alot worse shape that I was "Which is possible, but I would think unlikely" or he just doesn't have the discipline that a 22 "I think he is" year old should have.

I know that its quite possible that I am entirely wrong here, but I don't think he uses them for enhancements, but I also think that he is just undisciplined and has become reliant on his meds.
