Vikings “host” Giants at Ford Field

For the first time ever, Monday Night Football is coming to Ford Field. But the Detroit Lions are not invited.

The game between the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, which was first scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Minnesota and then scheduled for Monday night in Minnesota, will instead be played on Monday night in Detroit, with kickoff at 7:20 p.m. Eastern. The news was confirmed this morning on NFL Network.

Heavy snow re-routed the Giants’ team plane to Kansas City, where the team is still working out travel arrangements to Detroit. Now the Vikings will also need to make travel plans.

Damage to the Metrodome made it impossible for the game to be played on the Vikings’ home field, and the league has determined that an outdoor game at the University of Minnesota’s football stadium wasn’t feasible. So Detroit was considered the next-best option.

The Giants-Vikings game will be shown on the local FOX affiliates for New York and Minnesota, and DirecTV Sunday Ticket subscribers can watch it as well.

There’s no word yet on the ticket situation for Monday night in Detroit, but here’s hoping Vikings ticket holders get a full refund, and fans in Detroit are allowed to attend for free.

UPDATE:  NFL spokesman Greg Aiello explains that the University of Minnesota stadium ultimately wasn’t an option.  “The Vikings and University of Minnesota have worked cooperatively and diligently on the re-location of the Giants-Vikings game,” Aiello said.  “The university, however, has informed the Vikings that unfortuately its stadium was shut down for winter and would take several days to prepare for an NFL game.”

I think Brett Favre determined that and outdoor game wasn’t feasible.

  2. Vikes might as well stay in Detroit for a week. MetroDump won’t be fixed in time, so next week’s Bears-Vikes game will need to be moved as well.

  3. “fans in Detroit are allowed to attend for free”… specially after them having to pay to watch the crap that Matt Millen assembled there

  4. As a Giants fan living in Burlco NJ I hope Fox and the league will agree that we’re included in the NY market.

  5. i kinda wanna plunk down some dough to fly to Detroit for the night and watch the game, assuming tix will be free.

  6. The Chargers had to move a home game against the Dolphins due to fires in San Diego. The game was moved to Arizona. Charger fans got a refund or credit for next year’s tickets. AZ fans got into the game for free. All seats were General Admission.

  7. Free tickets? What NFL do you follow MDS? That will never happen. 1 million people would show up! Why would you hope for that?

  8. Why fix the dome? Why not work out a deal to play at tcf bank stadium till that new stadium comes? Why waste money on something that isn’t gonna be there much longer?

  9. I live in Baltimore and I’d rather see this game than watch the Ravens play the disappointing Texans.

As far as what is considered “in market” look if the original game was scheduled to be broadcast in your area, if so, then you will get the game.

    lol, nasty.

  11. Why not move it to the Coliseum in LA for one game as a test balloon to see if LA really could handle a football team?

  12. If i was the Vikings or Giants…..I’d sign Barry Sanders right now, just to put butts in the stands. otherwise why the hell would fans in Detroit gives a rats ass

  13. Looks like even the stadium is giving up on the Vikings this season, the Vikings can’t be too impressed they are probably going to lose quite a bit of money, I would have to assume that the ticket holders won’t be willing to travel through the blizzard that started this whole mess.

My personal opinion rip the rest of the roof off and play outside in the snow like REAL football is suppose to be played.

You mean the same type of deal they could had made with the gophers to share that stadium before it was even built?

Because there isn’t going to be any new stadium in Minny. The only new stadium coming to town has already been built….and UM is playing in it. The Steelers share a stadium with Pitt and they have 6 Super Bowls. What makes Zygi think his craptacular team is so special that he deserves an exclusive building for his club?
