Though Bud Grant may not be coming out of retirement, tolerating the bone-chilling cold like an animal who has white hair not just on his head but all over his body, the Vikings will play a home game outdoors for the first time since December 20, 1981. (They lost to the Chiefs that day, 10-6, at the old Metropolitan Stadium.)
Cory Roufs of 1500ESPN.com reports that the Vikings are moving forward with plans to host the Bears at TCF Bank Stadium, the home of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Per Roufs, the roof at the Metrodome can’t be repaired by Monday, which would be only eight days after it collapsed under the weight of a snowstorm that originally delayed the Giants-Vikings game to Monday night. The game, in the event you’ve been trapped inside the Metrodome since Sunday, was played at Ford Field.
Roufs reports that the decision has been made not to try to repair the Metrodome before Monday’s game between the Bears and the Vikings.
Good…that’s how the game was meant to be played! Next time those knuckleheads up there design an indoor stadium, they might want to think about a real roof. What are the odds of getting 1 1/2 feet of snow in MN in the middle of December??? Just asking…
YES!!!!
Outdoors here we come!
Are they selling alcohol?
It is on a dry campus.
That fan base is so pussified now it will be empty. Chicago fans could fill the whole stadium.
it has held through 25+ Minnesota winters. I think it was designed with that in mind. Things happen….degrade, break etc.
Maybe they can play in “Bears Weather”. They used it to such a big advantage against the Patriots.
,,,,is that pronounced “Roofs” ?
F**k it,,,dig a gopher hole
I still don’t understand when the roof is filling with light, fluffy snow, why did they think that going up with fire hoses in well below freezing temps and hosing the roof down was a good idea?
Yes! Outdoor football returns to Minnesota!
Before moving out of the Met the Vikings went to four Super Bowls.
After moving, they’ve been to none.
Coincidence? No. The elements are on OUR side. The new stadium NEEDS to be open air. We’ll have weather colder than Lambeau, and after our players adjust to it, our homefield advantage will be MASSIVE!
SKOL VIKINGS!
agreed, thats what you get for playing in a bounce house

You are a complete moron – this area just dug out (and in many cases is still digging out) of almost 2 feet of snow, do you think a little cold weather will keep Vikings fans from coming to a historic game like this? Your view of a Vikings fan is jaded and not at all in touch with reality.

Well if he wouldn’t know who else could?
Since the Vikings are now officially out of the playoff hunt, the remaining games need to be more like pre-season. Evaluating talent, and preparing for the future. Since neither Favre or Tavaris are part of the future, both need to sit, and Webb needs to start.
The way football was meant to be played: on natural grass and outdoors!

Where did I say they won them jackass? My main point was that outdoor football in Minnesota was an enormous homefield advantage for them.
Run along now child. Good to know people still think they’re hard behind a computer screen.
Nice… It’s about time! I am a Bears fan, but even I miss the Met! I have always wondered why the powers that be gave away one of the greatest home field advantages in the NFL. Someone get Odin out of storage!!
Both teams should wear throwback uniforms, since this will be a real throwback game – Bears and Vikings, outdoors, in Minnesota, in December.

Yeah cupcake, I grew up in West Central Wisconsin in the TC television market. Probably saw more games at the old Met than Lambeau. Lived in the TC for 15 years and listened to every candy ass fan defend playing in a dome the whole time after the Jiffy Pop Dome was built.
Yeah, no clue at all you freakin poser. Have you even been to a pro football game played outside in Minny in your lifetime? Of course not. Shut your wet behind the ears, climate controlled seephole.
Even though I’m not a Vikes fan, my earliest childhood memories of watching NFL football in Northern Canada was the Vikes, Bears, and Packers in the snow.
Something about Fran Tarkenton, with that Viking helmet, throwing (or running) on that beautiful, frozen white stuff.
The game of life gives us signals, the Metrodome is one of them…PLAY OUTSIDE LIKE IT’S ALWAYS MEANT TO BE.

Henrypoopyhead. Sure seems to be a lot of you Packer fans going to Viking games. You are full of crap, but alas, how can we prove you wrong?
What kind of a tough guy like yourself still uses the word”poser”?
Let me guess, your a Packer season ticket holder and a “stockholder”, right?
Either that or you are jackass bear fan. Funny, I bet while going to the Met you were a Vikes fan, cos the pack and bears sucked fresh ass back then. Freaking idiot. Go hop in your tub with an appliance of some sort, youre sucking the intelligence out of the thread.

True.
And call me Captian Obvious, but the Vikings also aren’t the Patriots (which is sort of like saying poop is not solid gold and peanuts are not diamonds).
Right now, the Bears could play the Queens in the wind, rain, snow, sleet, blinding sun, monsoons, twisters, mudslides, in the middle of Saharah Desert, on the side of Mt. Everest with sherpas as referees, on a tropical island, in the middle of Katrina, during El Nino, on the set of Ice Age with Syd the Sloth (maybe he can QB for the Vikes!?), on the planet Hoth, in the Land of Morder, in the Dagobah system (the swampy planet where Yoda exiled himself), on the banks of the River Styxx, in the Bermuda Triangle, on the Bering Sea in winter, at high noon at the local Deadwood saloon, on the ice rings of Saturn, inside the “Tron” world, on a Quidditch field, on NY’s lower east side, in downtown Tokyo during rush hour, in the underwater lost city of Atlantis, WHEREVER–and it’s not going to make a difference in the out come of the game, or change the fact that ONE team is going to win (and win the division in the process).
@henrypuppyhead
You can talk in anecdotes and heresay based on your experiences all you want, but it’s really not hard to see that people around here will see this as a novel experience that won’t want to be missed. The stadium will be full on Monday Night, there’s no 2 ways about it.
Oh and sorry if I don’t meet your criteria for BEING BORN to participate in this conversation, I’ll let my mother know you’re disappointed in the time she decided to get pregnant with me, I’m sure she’ll be crushed you don’t approve.
Again, you’re just another jaded Packer fan with a tainted view of Vikings fans based on some preconceived notion that we’re all as dumb and pansy as the vikings depicted on Capital One commercials, and you maintain that facade to suit your agenda to paint them as the worst fans in the league so in contrast Packer fans look like the best fans in the league. People who live in glass houses really shouldn’t throw stones, but from the looks of that pile of rocks behind you, you’re not too concerned.
See you on the flipside where I’m right, and you’re wrong.
It’s great for the game of football that this contest has been moved outdoors like the sport is meant to be played.
It’s bad for the state of Minnesota, however.
These are not your hardcore, Bud Grant-led Vikings. Who do you like for the win in this weather.. A notoriously weak dome team that wears purple, or the usually outdoor Chicago?
These are also not hardcore Vikings fans. Those don’t exist anymore.
Why do you think Pack and Bears fans always went to games at the late Dome? Because tickets are always available. Look at Chilly’s last stand.. The purple faithful were outnumbered in their own former house. Does that happen at Lambeau or Soldier? Of course not.
So who do you think is gonna show up for this extremely cold outdoor game, especially now that many tickets will not be available: The Vikings fans, who don’t sell out their own playoff games, who get outnumbered by rival fans at their home games, who would have already had a new stadium if only they couldn’t be bothered to travel all the way to Blaine, and who refuse to pass taxes that would keep the team they claim to love from moving as far away as possible..
Or the Bears fans, who routinely travel with their team on road games, who sit routinely in subzero temperatures to support their team even when they’re down by 30 points, and who had no issue whatsoever with passing a bond to rebuild their team’s house, except when the legislature wanted to put a roof on it.
There goes your fairweather fanbase. There goes your homefield advantage. There goes what’s left of your season, and soon.. there goes your franchise.
Arriba, Vikingos de Los Angeles.
@alewatcher
Dead on!! Now that is what I am talking about…how cool would that be? This needs to happen.
