Signs point to possible Rex Grossman start

Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman AP

On Sunday, FOX’s Jay Glazer reported that Redskins backup quarterback Rex Grossman split first-team reps with starter Donovan McNabb in practice last week, and that McNabb would be on a short leash against the Bucs.

In the wake of a one-point loss at home to Tampa, the leash may be even shorter.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports there’s a chance Grossman will start on Sunday at Dallas.  Though Kelli Johnson of CSN Washington cites an unnamed team source who says, “I don’t think that’s true,” we’ve also heard that Grossman could be getting the start but that, at this point, nothing is definite.

It could be that the two men share the reps in practice again, and that coach Mike Shanahan decides on a starter based on how they both work this week.

Meanwhile, we hope McNabb didn’t spend that $40 million guaranteed all in one place.

UPDATE:  Is it just us, or does the photo of Grossman and McNabb look like the beach picture of the Kruger family with Costanza lurking in the background?

Currently the worst run NFL franchise.

Worse than the Raiders, Bills, Bengals, and Lions.

Maybe they can also bring back the Ol’ Ball Coach for a Gator reunion. I love Spurrier. Maybe Zorn can come back for a guest stint as well. Hip, Hip, Hooray! Thanks, Dan. The only thing that sucks as bad as the Cooke heirs getting shafted is the fact that Danny is so young and so Napoleanic that I will have to endure this misery for the rest of my life. Job never suffered this much compared to the plight of today’s Redskin fan.

  7. scorpiodsu says: Dec 14, 2010 4:34 PM

Maybe Gross can kick a field cuz lord knows Gano can’t. But I don’t even see the point right now. They aren’t winning anything they already resigned McNabb. If Snyder really did all that without Shanahan’s knowledge what makes us think that he’s going to let him bench McNabb? And if he does let him bench McNabb that would make him look even more idiotic than what we already think.

  8. ahoff829 says: Dec 14, 2010 4:35 PM

How come both times you have written this story you have neglected to include the fact that they split first team reps every Friday practice? This isn’t anything new, McNabb will still be out there throwing dirtballs on Sunday like every other week.

    #HTTR!

  13. FinFan68 says: Dec 14, 2010 4:44 PM

Rex Grossman is better than he is given credit for. He has made it to the same number of SuperBowls as McNabb has. Why wouldn’t they give him a shot. McNabb has not been tearing things up lately. He has had a couple of good games but he has made some very poor decisions as well. What could it hurt?

22/35 225 yards 2TDs and 100 rating and you drive your team in for the tying score with no time left and you are sent to the bench? Shannahan is an idiot, McNabb might not have had a good day but you are not going to get anything better from Rex. Your kicker goes 1-3 and you botch the game tying extra point and this is the QBs fault. Shannahan is going to have to gut that team to win back the locker room.

Hay Dan, i would love to sign a million dollar contract to throw dirt balls to receivers, or for that matter, not be on target almost 50% of the time. where’s the dotted line?

Now everyone in the world see why Philly finally had enough… covering Donovans ass for the last 4-5yrs has been painful. too bad we let such talent as Westbrook, Dawkins, Lito, Runyan, Brown, etc, leave instead of fixing the real problem.

  25. ijr213 says: Dec 14, 2010 5:10 PM

McNabb doesn’t play a bad game, 22/35, 2TDs and no INTs. If he could have gotten some help from Gano, they would have won by 5. I don’t see how this is benchable.

I hate to say it because I love him as Denver fan, but Shanahan didn’t come into this with a plan. He hasn’t done anything to help that team.
    1. He stockpiled aged runningbacks only to cut most of them and find his old buddy Ryan Torrain as the ideal fit.
    2. The offensive line is horrible still, even with Trent Williams.
    3. He hasn’t been able to get the D to rally.
    4. Outside of Santana Moss and Cooley, there are no viable receiving options. None.

Benching McNabb accomplishes nothing. Getting some players around him that aren’t terrible does.

  32. riggoisdrunk says: Dec 14, 2010 5:27 PM

Why don’t you try to do some investigation before you throw out incorrect terms on here.

McNabb is absolutely not guaranteed $40 million, this has been reported on many times, where have you been?

He is guaranteed $3.5 million for the remainder of the season and that’s it. If the Redskins decide to cut him at the end of the season they don’t own him a dime more.

You’re a complete idiot, this kind of irresponsible reporting has turned the journalism world into a joke.

You mean the Offensive Line, Reid’s absolute passion to throw the ball 40x a game, and oh yeah not having WR until less than 2 years ago?
Stupid Filthadelphia fan. You had no idea what you had, cheered when McNabb left, cheered when Kolb was named the starter, and then cheered more when Vick took over.
Vick’s going to get knocked out before playoffs, and since Kolb isn’t Desean’s boy he’s going to act like a child and not play to his fullest.
The only reason Lesean Mccoy looks good this season is he’s tearing up 50 yard runs in garbage time because defenses are tired after chasing Vick for 4 quarters.

Even with the CowTurds and the Favre’s having such stellar seasons. Shanahan’s handling of this team, and his idiotic coaching and personnel moves, make the Skins the laughing stock of the NFC…Maybe he’s waiting for Elway to find the fountain of youth or something…I personally hope they sign the rat to a lifetime contract…

McNabb is a worthless sack of crap. Eagles must still be laughing over that trade. Redskins must believe that they are just not capable of drafting well and developing talent. Every year Dan the clown tries to buy as many free agent dinosaurs as he can and trade away draft choices for washed up turds.

Totally agree with you skins23. However…with only 3 games left and the playoffs out of reach…why not see what Rex can do? If he fails miserably like he did on the one play against the Lions then the coaching staff should be convinced that he isn’t a “back up” QB. Is it fair that Rex can be judged on one play though? If Rex does well, I guess we will see his closet fans jump out with his “replica jersey.” This is a time to evaluate and get ready for a great off-season.

Give Shanny 3 years and he will have this organization competitive again and celebrating the glory days again.

Gotta echo the posts of the “We told you so” crowd. After 11 years of McMartyr, we know what we’re talking about. This is oh so similar to when Richie Kotite was canned and the national media, especially the big blow hard over at the ESPN, called us crazy for cheering that move. After going 4-28 with the Jets and fading into the sunset, we’re still waiting for that apology from Mr. Back-Back-Back.

    ====================================

You’re really proving to be clueless about football in general. McCoy is dangerous because he gets it done rushing and receiving, regardless of Vick’s rushing yardage. Vick hasn’t gained big yardage with his legs in weeks. I forget who they were playing, perhaps it was the Skins? What was the score of that game anyway?

  46. pga33 says: Dec 14, 2010 8:34 PM

Believe it or not, the Redskins are going in the right direction even though the team as it currently stands, stinks. On the field, they are about the same. The stance on McNabb is curious, but it’s clear Shanahan thinks McNabb should be performing better. If not, he’ll sit…even if it is in favor of lifetime garbage Grossman. Then again, it could be a bit of a strategy to keep McNabb from getting killed behind one of the worst o-lines in football.

Excusing Haynesworth told everyone in that locker room that they don’t run the asylum anymore. Even though most of the players didn’t like Haynesworth, they thought that $35M made him untouchable. See ya, Fat Albert.

In a couple of years, Shanahan will have that ship righted. It amazes me that SkinsFan thought that rotten ship was going to get straightened out in a preseason. There was simply too much to get fixed for them to have any hope.

Where are you guys? Almost like I predicted in August – you’d all be gone by Thanksgiving.

I was also right that FedEx Field would be empty for December home games huh?

Care to revive your arguments from back in the summer about the Eagles finishing at the bottom of the division? Or about how Larry Johnson was going to be a monster?

    Any of that?

Perhaps all of you can take off your Ravens gear and listen to the words of a wise man:

“SOME PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES IN THEY LIVES. AND THEY MADE A BIG ONE LAST SUMMER.”

Yes, some people indeed make mistakes.

    Have an AWESOME off-season!

And, as always, THANKS FOR THE DRAFT PICKS!

Grossman is far from the worst QB in the NFL.
He has had some bad games but he has had some really great ones as well.
He throws a nice deep ball and Bernard Berrian owes his big payday with the Vikings to Grossman.

He is not a wimp and could have been a very good QB if he were only taller.

THe funny thing is, when you talk about the past and talk about the future, that means you know you suck now, and you can pretty much predict that your Racist Skins will more likely than not, suck for many years to come. WOw That must feel like a death sentence to a football fan, knowing that you will never realisticly compete for anything meaningful past week 11 or 12 every year until your owner dies…
Actually eagles fans go to sleep and wake up and they are happy to be in 1st place in the NFC east and are going to be serious contenders for a very, very long time. Have a Good night.

Man Donovan aged fast. Peyton Manning is in his Prime, Tom Brady is in his Prime, Mcnabb looks like he has 1 or 2 more effective years left in him at the most. He already had enough flaws in his game as it was but now with all the injuries and how horribly he’s aged I dont see him rebounding from this season.

Andy Reid really knows when to fold em. Hes just like Bellicheck in that sense. Barely anyone whos let goes by New England goes on and thrives and its the same in Philly. Theres alot things about Andy Reids game that I dont like but that definently isnt one of them.
