After the Chargers shut down the Colts and quarterback Peyton Manning, we said that any AFC South team looking for a coach should hire San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, instructing him to do twice per year to Manning what he did to him this season.
If a team like the Texans or the Titans is interested in that possibility, it’ll have to wait until the Chargers have finished with their postseason, if the Chargers have one.
“I have to think about the task at hand,” Rivera said Wednesday, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “We have to do the things we have to do. After the playoffs, if it happens, great. If not, I have a great situation here.”
Rivera has interviewed for eight head-coaching jobs. He was regarded as a prime candidate in 2006, when he served as defensive coordinator for a Bears team that made it to the Super Bowl. But no offers came and Rivera’s contract surprisingly wasn’t renewed by the Bears.
If the Chargers don’t make the playoffs, we don’t rule out Rivera becoming a candidate to become the next coach of the Chargers, if head coach Norv Turner takes the fall for the team’s inability to dig out of its latest early-season hole.
