Matt Cassel gets the start for Kansas City

Eleven days after an emergency appendectomy, Matt Cassel is the Kansas City Chiefs’ starting quarterback today against the St. Louis Rams.

The question of whether Cassel or Brodie Croyle would start was a rare case of a game-time decision really coming down to game time, and not just to the time when the team needs to submit its list of inactives. Even after the Chiefs announced Cassel was active, they were waiting to see how he’d look in pre-game warmups: Albert Breer of NFL Network reported that even after Cassel started warming up, the Chiefs weren’t sure if he could go.

But Cassel did get the start against the Rams, and on the Chiefs’ first offensive possession, he completed one of three passes and Kansas City went three-and-out.

The Rams lead 6-0 in the first quarter.
