Deion Sanders: Devin Hester is a better return man than I was

Chicago Bears v Detroit Lions

Deion Sanders was a great football player, and he’s not shy about saying so: When Sanders was named the 34th best player in NFL history, he was furious, saying it was insulting that anyone could think 33 players were better than him.

So it says a lot that Sanders is willing to proclaim Devin Hester a better return man than he was — and the best return man in NFL history.

Sanders tweeted on Monday night that Hester is the greatest returner of all time, and he expanded on those comments in an interview on ESPN 1000 in Chicago.

I think right now he’s a Hall of Famer,” Sanders said. “He spent a couple years without barely getting the ball kicked to him. I can’t think of a returner ever playing the game with the impact he has. There is none. He’s phenomenal.”

Hester became the NFL’s all-time leader in kick return touchdowns when he brought back a punt 64 yards Monday night in Minnesota. For his career, Hester has 175 punt returns for 2,127 yards and 10 touchdowns, and 112 kickoff returns for 2,684 yards and four touchdowns. Sanders retired with 212 punt returns for 2,199 yards and six touchdowns, and 155 kickoff returns for 3,523 yards and three touchdowns.

I love me some Devin Hester too and I’m glad the Bears have him!! And since he’s young, I hope we have him for a long time.

And I’m out of my mind stunned that Sanders says Hester is a better return man!!!

  2. cobrala says: Dec 21, 2010 4:18 PM

And by ‘furious’ you meant yucking it up for attention/ratings?

  3. dilberry says: Dec 21, 2010 4:21 PM

Ted Ginn Jr made a lot of money because of Devin Hester.

Good to see one of the kings of ego admit he’s not the best there ever was. I am turning into a fan of Deion…which I never would’ve imagined.

Irvin and a few other former players need to take a page out of his book.

    file that one under obvious.

If Desmond Howard can win a Heisman for kick returning excellence, I don’t see why Hester can’t go to the NFL Hall of Fame for being the greatest at that position.

Ray Guy is a specialist in the HoF, why not Hester?

  7. melikefootball says: Dec 21, 2010 5:11 PM

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEE that was a profound statement.

  8. touchdownroddywhite says: Dec 21, 2010 5:12 PM

    Devin Hester, you are RIDICULOUS!!!

Rich Eisen practically threw a fit when Hester was voted best return man of all time, saying Hester had a couple flashy seasons but hasn’t done enough to nearly deserve that title.

    How does crow taste buddy?

  9. meattuperello says: Dec 21, 2010 5:25 PM

Perfect example of a broken clock being right twice a day.

Good job Loud mouth, you finally got something right!

Of course the Bevis and Butthead response would work in this case too.

    Duh!

If the Bears had a brain they’d trade him in the off season for a No 1 receiver or something else….really, he may end up being a HOF’er, but an every down player who’s a top player is a better option…the Bears blew it when they didn’t trade him a couple of years ago before they and everyone else knew he would NEVEr be a top receiver!

What matters is not who is “better” but that he is at the top of his profession against his peers. So sick of the constant need to rank the sports universe. So infantile and really, meaningless. Even Deion has fallen into this pattern. They were/are both great in their day.

As far as HOF? Hester has not done it on either side of the ball, just special teams, and until Steve Tasker and Ray Guy get in, neither does he in my book.

    @moolah954

Really? Cuz all i saw this year was FSU pound the Canes into the ground like the once great, now pathetic program they are.. Damn it seems like all teams that play at Sun Life stadium are just straight garbage…as well as their fan bases.. maybe if the fans actually cared those teams would be better.. And maybe instead of putting two dolphin games on primetime they should put teams that actually show up on next year

HUH? yeah, the bears should trade away one of the best players in the NFL, a guy who can turn momentum in an instant. one of the most electrifying athletes to ever put on a uniform…you’re right, he should be traded NOW

    ====================================
    No.
It is not just the TDs that he scores or the 50 yard returns that don’t go all the way.
It is the fact that he scares the hell out of teams, they have to game plan around kicking to him and he gives them good field position even when he does not touch the ball.

He is a game changer and their is not one single team in the NFL that does not want him returning kicks for them.
On top of that he is not a attention seeking jag off.

  21. sportsmediacritic says: Dec 21, 2010 8:47 PM

What’s insane is that Hester is only 28 years old. His records may never be broken when it is all said and done.

  22. 4dabears says: Dec 21, 2010 9:12 PM

@ randolph32- you must be a real dunce. The last time I checked there were 3 phases in football. Not 2, idiot!

  23. ham1 says: Dec 21, 2010 9:29 PM

Was it Sanders record hester broke? No. Well B Mitch was better than the self proclaimed doofus.

  24. comeonnowguys says: Dec 21, 2010 10:12 PM

Has Gale Sayers conceded the same fact yet? Last interview I heard with him regarding this, he politely disagreed.

Gale Sayers is a bitter old D-Bag who will never give any Bear credit who has played after 1975. He’s pretty much worn out his welcome in Chicago with his asshattery…

  28. BC says: Dec 22, 2010 9:33 AM

Deion Sanders, Brian Mitchell and Eric Metcalf were the three best that I saw play. Not old enough to remember Sayers playing. But Hester is a beast. Dude has serious wheels.

Don’t get ahead of yourself now son. Deion didn’t even have to return kicks/punts to make the HOF or the all time greatest players list. He was probably the best shutdown corner of all time. It just so happened he was one of the best ever at returning kicks/punts too….for fun

  30. bjb2865 says: Dec 22, 2010 11:09 AM

Deion You were a flash in the pan returner. You arent even on the top 5 list of returners …so to say this…..you are just putting your name in something you dont belong in.

    *******

I have long been a fan of Deion, but it is definitely nice to see him giving credit where credit is obviously due if you look at the stats. Prime was dangerous, like a Black Widow, while Hester is deadly like one of those spiders off of the movie Arachniphobia.
