Texans at low point after “embarrassing” effort

Texans owner Bob McNair probably didn’t hear any more encouraging words about the direction of his franchise this week.

Just days after McNair said his team was headed in the right direction based on a comeback attempt against the Ravens, Houston was trounced 31-17 by a Titans team that had lost six straight games.

Safety Bernard Pollard called the effort “embarrassing” while coach Gary Kubiak said his team “looked slow and tired.” McNair practically seemed to guarantee Kubiak’s job for 2011 with his words last week, but the Texans are 1-7 over their last eight games.

Kubiak says he plans to finish 7-9, with games against the Broncos and Jaguars on the schedule. We’re not sure these games are really an appropriate way to evaluate Kubiak since he’s been on the job five years. If McNair can be swayed by the kind words of his colleagues, it wouldn’t be a surprise if these final two games help decide Kubiak’s fate.

Linebacker Brian Cushing was asked if Bill Cowher could help improve the depressing Texans defense.

“Gary Kubiak and (defensive coordinator) Frank Bush are my coaches, and they’re the only ones I listen to,” Cushing told John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Kubiak’s players always say how much they support Kubiak and want him as their coach. They don’t play like it.
