Packers in position for playoffs after blowout win

Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson

Aaron Rodgers rebounded from his concussion a lot better than the Giants rebounded from their collapse against the Eagles.

Rodgers threw for 404 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-17 thrashing of the G-Men on Sunday.  It was still a one score game midway through the third quarter until the Giants defense fell apart again.

Turnovers have been a huge problem for the Giants all year.  They coughed it up six times Sunday, including four interceptions from Eli Manning.  Rodgers made the Giants pay for their mistakes again and again.

The Packers, 9-6, know they are in the playoffs with a win against the Bears next week.  The Giants will need help to get into the tournament.  The Giants loss clinches the NFC East for the Eagles.

We’ll have all week to break down scenarios.  Today’s story was about one of the league’s best quarterbacks taking down a supposedly strong Giants defense.

That’s a story that Giants fans have grown used to the last two weeks.

Juddstir- Clearly wrong the Bears, Eagles, Steelers, are way overrated. Especially the Bears with the Pats game, how many teams did they beat with the backup QB playing for the other team? Then you let the Jets score 30 some points. You have to be kidding me.

Did we have a vacation day from special school?

Saints are a wild card team you dolt. The Packers lost to the Pats by 4 points in Foxboro with a Matt Flynn at QB, who never started a game. Packers beat the PR whore show that is the Jets at home. Beat the Eagals and next week is going to be a war.

This the Packers “B” squad, and a darn good one. But they haven’t made it yet. The Bears come to town next week, and if the Packers can knock them off, I will guarantee you no team will want to play them first in the playoffs….wildcard or not. I hope they make it and go deep. They hung with the best in the NFC (Atlanta) and the AFC (New England,) and with both games on the road.

  27. psujay says: Dec 26, 2010 8:50 PM

Giants’ fans are delusional. “They have good players, why don’t they win?” They have a few overhyped skill guys, but they have a SLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOW secondary, so any QB who is remotely mobile avoids the rush and the WRs are wide open. Or, if the QB can get the ball out quickly, the receivers are faster than the DBs and the Giants can’t tackle. Steve Smith is a glorified slot receiver (check his combine times against Jason Avant…they’re the same player but Smith has more opportunity because the Giants don’t have receivers in the class as their division rivals). Their O-Line is overrated, and if you (queue Woody Paige) LOOK AT THE SCHEDULE, every year the Giants start off with all of their easy games, BSPN (whomever I stole that from, it’s awesome) touts NY as some great team, and then they collapse because the hard games come later in the season. Just like last year. They started 5-0 against NO ONE and then went 3-8 against the real teams in the conference/league. The Giants are always overrated because ESPN loves to tout the Giants (suck) and the Cowboys (blow). Their most hyped picks…shockingly always coming from cities where BSPN has a whole website dedicated to them. If LA had a team it would be the same story. Now all they need is ESPNFavre.com.

I drink the Bears koolaide but I also understand that rodgers is a good qb and anything can happen. no better way to start playoffs then a prelude with the Pack and the Bears.

I’m a Patriot fan and the last team I want to see in the SB (yes we will be there again) is the Packers. They played us toughest of all NFC teams this season, with their “B” Team!

Compare that with the other “good” NFC team we played, the Bears….they are terrible. Would love to have that rematch. Everyone knows Cutler is a joke – everyone except the demented Chicago fans that is.

Come on Bears….you can do it! Help us get our FOURTH ring.

It’s deja vu all over again for G-Hens and their now silent fans….Last year they quit and gave up a ton of points during the last few games, now in the last two games they have given up 83 points. Enough with this “great defense” crap. The offense is a turnover machine, and the defense is as overated as it gets, good teams usually play well in games that count, and they simply aren’t a good team.

  44. wydok says: Dec 26, 2010 11:35 PM

  45. dirksimmons says: Dec 26, 2010 11:47 PM

Haha, all of the Bears hate is extremely tiring. Accept the fact that this is a far better team with an elite defensive end (Peppers), a future hall-of-fame linebacker back on the field after missing all of last year, an offensive scheme that doesn’t have your QB throwing INTs every other play or getting rocked 2 seconds after he touches the ball, and another future hall-of-famer returning punts and kicks, virtually guaranteeing we get the ball towards midfield. Come on. Give a little credit where credit is due. I’ve heard so many Packer fans whine about how the Bears have faced all these second-string QBs and what not…And the Packers scoring three points against the Lions and their 3rd string QB is excusable why? Or losing to the same Redskins team the Bears lost to? The Packers can be an elite team, but they can lay down too. I’m very anxious to see which one shows up on Sunday.

The word you were struggling to spell was “guarantee”…and the player you were referencing was Brian Urlacher–the future Hall of Famer, all-time leading tackler in bears history.

And that simply never happened. After being asked, he said he believed the Bears–HIS team–was the better team. What was he supposed to say?

And I’d rather my team gets drubbed by a good team like the Patriots than gets beaten by the Lions (with their 3rd string QB) when the playoffs are at stake.

In the meantime, we’ll take the division title–thanks–and see you chumps next week.

Til then, quit acting like Viking fans.

For the decent Pack fans that aren’t making crap up and pulling it out of their green cheeseholes–looking forward to a good game next week…it’ll be interesting to see what Peppers can do when he’s NOT being held on each and every snap. :-)

    He’s right, Pervy — it’s a ground level day 1 rebuilding job.

No coach, no decent GM, suspect scouting, no QB, aging line on both sides of the ball, inconsistent secondary, and few draft picks!

Can they hold onto Rice (doubtful when he has no idea who’ll be throwing to him).

Harvin is a great talent but his migraines make him unreliable.

AD may have peaked. Running backs can have short shelf lives.

And will they play at the Metrodome or TCF Bank Park? Uncertainty everywhere.

Next few years could be very tough for the Vikings.

If they lose to the Iggles and resurgent Lions, Vikes could end up in the NFC cellar.

    Better get used to it.

    ________________

4 wins? I think that’s a bit extreme. Frasier knows his stuff. If they keep him on board, I’d say a few 5-11 seasons. If they don’t, it’ll be more like 2-14.

I don’t think it matters though. Most Minnesotans have made it clear they’d rather have no team at all than continue with the one they have now…

  57. jimmysee says: Dec 28, 2010 5:48 AM

re: Vikings medium-term chances for success.

I’d have more confidence in Joe Webb if there were a coach in place who has a system.

Until they remove the “interim” from Frasier’s title, there’s a lot that remains unsettled in Minnesota.

If the Vikings lose to both the Iggles and the Lions, hard to see how Frasier holds onto that job… ending the season on a 4-game losing streak.

Revolving coaches and co-ordinators have killed QB careers.

  58. stfudonny says: Dec 28, 2010 1:17 PM

Suspect scouting? Harvin and Peterson are both ROY’s. S.Rice was a steal in the 2nd round, Greenway?
Aging lines? P.Williams is 38. The rest are 30(Kwill) and under. Oline? Hutch is the oldest at 32.
    Few draft picks? They have a 1, a 2 , a 4 ,2 -5’s 2-6’s and 2-7’s!!!!!
How could they not hold onto Rice? They can franchise him you tool!
Harvin has missed 2 games in 2 years. Shut the hell up.
All Day has peaked? He has 1150 yards and 11 tds (in 13 games)
Metrodome or TCF? Sounds like they have 2 options of where to play……

Welcome back, Jeff. It’s been a while. Kind of a surprise though, usually your ilk doesn’t reemerge until April or so after a season like this one.

Still waiting on the glory for now.. Ted hasn’t quite absolved himself yet. I’ve said since the beginning that I hoped he would though. My favorite team winning games is not a hollow feeling at all! What a stupid statement.

I just want the Packers to be successful. I could care less who gets them there, be that Favre, Ted, Jerry friggin Glanville, etc.

I just didn’t see Ted having what it takes. If I was wrong, which is actually starting to look more and more likely, I’ll be the first to admit it, and then I’ll be ecstatic, just like any other Packers fan.

Never once, on this site or elsewhere, have I said I wanted to see the Packers lose, for ANY reason. They are still my team, regardless of their state of affairs.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves however. There hasn’t been any “success” yet. All Ted teams still have only managed one playoff win combined. I’m not about to sing the man’s praises until that changes.

For now, I’m just shocked and impressed that a team I had pegged as an also-ran is staying afloat and making a run despite a multitude of injuries to key players. That says we may be on the right track after all, and that makes me at least somewhat optimistic going forward.

After all, I wasn’t wanting to suffer through yet another complete tear-down-and-rebuild like your team’s upcoming one. That is no fun whatsoever.

While I don’t like you, I do agree with you.

I think Frasier will turn out to be a decent coach, and should have been hired over Childress from the outset. That said, there is no denying that that team is a complete shambles aside from having the league’s best RB.

They bet the farm and lost, and now have years of work ahead of them. That’s even assuming they keep Frasier instead of hiring another Tice/Childress type, which there is no guarantee of yet.

I am sure Minnesota fans are more than accustomed to failure by now, but I would think this particular one stings a bit more than most.

With the state’s disdain for the franchise’s continued off-field antics, and the failed stadium talks, they may not survive this time around. I would really hate to see that, but it is starting to appear likely.

What I find humorous is that you are too dumb to understand how wrong you are. You have been bashing this TT led team for over 2 years, claiming they will never be succesful while he is there. Now, they are on the verge of the playoffs and you will gleefully change your tune midstream. How can you feel good about yourself( I know you dont in any other facet of your life, your postings reek of self loathing) and your fandom? You have been the Packer fanbase squeaky wheel for well over 2 years, fighting with your fellow fans and basically being a pariah to them. Now you want to say ” I mad a mistake, TT knows what he’s doing”?? You are hedging your bets on the chance that they lose Sunday. That way, you can say see? No TT team can do anything. You are a flip flopper. Fans like you are garbage==========================
    Complete tear down? LMAO!!!
Peterson, Rice, Harvin,Loadholt, Hutch on offense.
KWill ,Allen, Henderson, Greenway,Winfield anda returning Griffin on D?
Nah, no talent there at all.
Joe Webb mad a pretty good showing last night, but that was just the Eagles letting down right? It’s not like when Flynn had a good game and it was all talent and coaching, right?
You and Supers wishful thinking aside, Minnesota is not that bad off.

Super, care to go double or nothing on what I “owe” you on that 3 years of misery for the Vikes? No? Thought so.

We’ll ignore the personal jabs. You don’t know me. You’ve also said your persona on here differs from your real-life one, why would I be any different?

Actually, I’ve bashed Ted’s leadership for far longer than that. They’ve made the playoffs twice in that time. I wasn’t impressed.

They may or may not lose on Sunday, (I actually believe they’ll win) but either way won’t affect how I feel. Ted still has a lot to prove to all Packers fans, and he probably shouldn’t have lasted there this long with everything that he’s done.

I only say that the possibility of him proving me wrong is still there, and I am usually humble enough to admit when I’m wrong. If by some miracle a Ted-led Packers team DOES win a title, should I not celebrate?

We all flip-flop to some extent. I’m sure you don’t feel the same about Favre as you did this time last year. Does that make you a bad fan?

    ____________

Yes, that’s right. Complete tear down.

I covered Peterson already. He’s incredible. No one can take that from him.

However, the rest of the “talent” you mentioned didn’t do anything this year, why would the next be different?

Rice hasn’t been the same since he got hurt (and may not be with the team next year), Harvin is talented but unable to stay on the field with his unfortunate migraine issues, Loadholt is nothing particularly special, Hutchinson and McKinnie are done.

Greenway is another Hawk, consistent but not great. Henderson, Williams and Allen are having off years and may or may not get back to form, Winfield is older than Hutchinson (though he did have a great game last night), and Griffin?? I.. I don’t even know what to say.

Matt Flynn sucks. That WAS all coaching, starting with the onside kick opener. Webb has a lot of potential. I’ve said that before. He may well be “the man” in the future for you, but that team still needs an overhaul (and a stadium) regardless.

Suck sure isn’t the smartest around, but even he sees it. You need to lose the purple glasses if you don’t.

Your take on the state of any franchise means absolutely nothing to me. You;ve proven over and over again on here that you have no clue. Vikes are going to be 6-10 most likely, they have core talent and this team is young enough in key areas that you dont “blow up” the team. Your assesment of personell notwithstanding. I have no purple colored glasses, I’m being realistic, they aren’t far away from being a playoff team. Your take on Vikings players not “doing anything” is priceless! Well he had an off year, that means he will continue to have off years……simply pathetic line of thinking, but you are that stupid.

I’m not even going to explain to you how hypocritical you are in your fanhood. You are either too dumb or you actually believe the tripe you post. Suffice it to say, when your own fellow fans turn on you, You know you aren’t a very good fan.
Super? Double or nothing or not?! C’mon make a bet with me that I’m conscious for!!!
