Singletary firing could come this week

With the San Francisco 49ers mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, it probably goes without saying that head coach Mike Singletary will not be back next season.

But Singletary might not even be back for the season finale next week.

According to Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, 49ers owner Jed York would not commit to Singletary coaching next week against the Cardinals. York also said the 49ers will begin interviewing general manager candidates soon.

I’m not sure what purpose would be served by firing Singletary with one game remaining, but perhaps York is just displeased enough with Singletary’s coaching this season to pull the trigger.

Or maybe Singletary will be allowed to coach one more lame-duck game, and they’ll formally fire him next week.

  1. after that little outburst, i cant agree more.

am i the only one who laughed their ass off when ted ginn gave troy smith a towel to the face to calm him down, got swatted away by troy, then tried again??

  2. Off topic, but I don’t see any mention of Kerry Collins topping 40,000 yards, only the 12th person all time to do that. When only the 12th person in the history of the NFL (or something like that) does something, isn’t it worth a mention on a site dedicated to…you know…the NFL. Maybe you mentioned it, but I didn’t see it. I’m not a fan of his, but I am a fan of history and imortant milestones.

  3. I’ve said since day one this was a stupid move. You bench a guy because of a poor outing in which he had 2 seconds to throw on every play and the whole team played terrible. Then you wait until 4 minutes left in the game to pull a guy with a 36% completion rate, 3 fumbles and a pick and an absolute fluke TD that was overthrown for Davis and happened to go right to Crabtree in stride. Troy Smith had a horseshoe in his hole on many of his big plays everyone raved about anyway. Almost every big play he made this year was a desperation throw.

  4. There is always much talk about having a franchise QB. How about a franchise coach?

It’s amazing how guys with antics and gimmicks burn out so quickly.

  5. It’s sad when such a remarkable player hits a brick wall after becoming a head coach. Mike knew he was walking into a mess, but certainly couldn’t have predicted all the detrimental things (some completely out of his control) that happened once he took over. I think Mike was such an emotional, idealistic player that he never really understood in advance what a nasty business coaching in the NFL can be. But no one can ever take away from him what a great linebacker he was.

  6. I have been following this team since 1956 and except for the Joe Thomas era I cannot wait for Mike Singletary and his staff to be released. Inept and unprepared all season.

  7. well, people normally dont get fired unless a replacement is in hand.

which tells me manusky wont take the helm.

  8. C’mon everybody, the inevitable Jon Gruden and Co. scenario will play out after the season. The 49ers will then trade up to get their guy, Andrew Luck, and the Alex Smith experiment will mercifully come to an end.

As a Raiders fan, this is worst case scenario type stuff. Chucky, across the Bay, to rub things in to Al Davis.

  9. the next offensive play Singletary knows, will be the first—hooray to Troy for arffing at him………granted TS didn’t play well

  10. “It probably goes without saying that head coach Mike Singletary will not be back next season.”

    Along with QB Alex Smith.

Singletary should STILL coach in the NFL…Just not head coach material.

  11. He should be fired after starting Troy Smith today. What a terrible decision. And then the kid convinced him to let him keep playing! Those 2 extra drives he 3-and-outed could’ve been huge!

  12. Maybe the 49ers should wait until gametime to fire Singletary so they can put HIM on the spot in front of everyone and send him to the lockerroom with everyone watching. You know, since he loves to put all of his players on the spot for everyone to see.

  13. I wouldn’t fire him at all… i would call him into the office and tell him to go Tom Couglin and calm down and stop being a hard ass.
It got him a Super Bowl.
    If Mike says no.
    Make him walk the warf.

  14. Singletary will be on the sidelines next week, but will be fired as soon as he returns to the locker room after the game.

Hey, they don’t have ANYBODY who can replace him for a lame-duck game!

  16. They need to keep singletary and get rid of the QB, offensive cord and the def cord. Singletary took the blame but it’s the coordinators fault. They are the ones who suck.
