Seahawks will turn to Whitehurst for NFC West title game

Charlie Whitehurst, Geno Hayes

On Sunday night, the Seahawks will host the Rams in a pre-playoff playoff game.  The winner captures the NFC West title.  The loser avoids the indignity of losing by 40 points at home the following weekend against the Saints.

The Seahawks could lose Sunday’s game by 40 points, given that quarterback Charlie Whitehurst will get the start.

Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Whitehurst will get the nod due to a back/hip injury suffered by starter Matt Hasselbeck on Sunday.  If healthy, Hasselbeck could play in the game.

Acquired in a trade with the Chargers, the perpetual backup hadn’t thrown a regular-season pass in four prior NFL seasons.  This year, he appeared in five games and started one, a 41-7 loss to the Giants.

Whitehurst has completed 35 of 63 passes, generating 315 yards.  He has one touchdown pass and five interceptions, and a passer rating of 54.7.

The good news?  It’s looking less likely that a 7-9 team will make it to the playoffs.

1st career start against a red hot(at the time) Giants team is not a good barometer of what he can do. Not sold on him, especially for a 3rd rounder and a 2nd round position swap. He will have a whole week to prepare and will be playing a much less stout(at the time) defense. Really think it is put up or sit down for good time for CW. Of course, it doesn’t help that Bates looks completely lost and in WAY over his head as an OC. Gary Kubiak, PLEASE!

I really hope Seattle doesn’t win next week. I can’t think of a team less-deserving of the playoffs.

Hmmmm — Jints shellack the Seahawks 41-7.

    Packers humiliate the Jints 45-17.

What does that say about the Seahwaks?

    Seahawks win 27-17.

Whitehurst is a solid QB. The Rams aren’t ready to go into Seattle and win a game like this.

    @jimmysee

Redskins beat the Packers so what does that say about them?

  13. bartpkelly says: Dec 27, 2010 7:51 PM

    @Jimmysee
It doesn’t say a thing. Browns beat Patriots, Patriots beat everyobdy…so what does that say about the Browns? See…it doesn’t work that way.

This is a totally ignorant article. I bet the author hasn’t seen a single Seahawks game all year, or knows more than 5 players. Seattle is obviously a rebuilding team. How many rebuilding teams even have the opportunity to win their division? The Rams have been rebuilding for years, and are stocked with high draft choices. It’s not Seattle’s fault that the rest of the NFC West has fallen on hard times, and now finds itself in the playoff hunt.

The niners nearly beat the Saints and the Saints….they better hope it isnt the Rams….the Saints didnt look dominant in any game this season…

Seahawks in the Superbowl? Hey it could happen, hell there are people out there that believe in God too.

I hope the Seattle drafts Ryan Mallett. This Seahawks fan can’t deal with a Chaz Whitehurst era.

Let’s not put the cart before the cart here about the Rams being in the playoffs. Who would have thought the Bolts would get crushed at the Bungals? Not me……

Yeah – they usually tank IN the playoffs, not BEFORE the playoffs.

    “Playoffs?… Playoffs?”

Out of all the matchups they could have moved to the Sunday night game, why this garbage? Seahawks-Rams, which will have the honor of being crushed the following week? I’d rather get a root canal.

Seattle will win the Beef O’Brady’s NFC West Bowl. Leon Washington will return 4 kicks for touchdowns and OJ Atogwe will return 3 picks for TD’s and the final score will be 28-21.

  24. leamer says: Dec 28, 2010 12:10 AM

With Bates at the helm, the Rams will win.

  25. damnskins703 says: Dec 28, 2010 12:45 AM

Getting a W in Seattle is not an easy thing to do.. Seattle has the loudest crowd in the NFL for sure.. I will take Seattle in this one Bradford has too much pressure on him.

  26. hooterdawg says: Dec 28, 2010 1:20 AM

Seattle coaching has lost a lot of games. Sure, they have a limited roster, but the coaching staff hasn’t figured out a scheme that takes advantage of their strengths. Pete Carroll has completely mismanaged Whitehurst. He hasn’t given Whitehurst much game experience even in blowouts ( and there have been many). Now Whitehurst has to start in a championship game with only a handful of meaningful snaps during the season. At least this week, he gets to practice withthe first team. Good luck, Charlie.

It’s not really that much of a difference.

Hasselbeck has always been pretty terrible. He has no leadership ability, zero fourth quarter comebacks ever, and one good season in his entire trash-talking career, which came courtesy of future HOF OLs Jones and Hutchinson.

Whitehurst hasn’t shown much so far, but at least the jury is still out on him. He could be equally terrible. He could be great. No one knows. However, I definitely like his chances more than Hasselbeck’s in this one.

You’re an idiot. This is the only game this week that is relevant regardless of who plays earlier. Besides, you need to get used to watching Sam Bradford dominate cuz its gonna be that way for a long, long time.

The Seahawks cried over the Steeler Super Bowl. Yet, they have no problem with the injustice of perhaps “earning” a play-off spot?
    This team has no soul.

If the situation were reversed and your team was intentionally screwed out of a championship for other peoples’ financial reasons, you’d be upset too.

No one hates the fairweather Seahawks fans and their famous pumped-in crowd noise as much as I do, but they have a pretty reasonable argument with that particular subject.
