Eagles road to Super Bowl just got much tougher

Michael Vick, Antoine Winfield

The Philadelphia Eagles will get their bye week.  It’s just going to happen in Week 17.

After Joe Webb and the Vikings took down Philadelphia 24-14 on Tuesday night, the Eagles don’t have anything to play for Sunday.  A game that was expected to be a laugher changed so much.

The Eagles are now stuck in the No. 3 seed in the NFC, and the Bears have clinched a first round bye.  The Packers need a win against Chicago to set up an enticing Eagles-Packers first-round matchup.

This performance makes you wonder about Philly’s weaknesses and maturity.  Michael Vick was hammered all night, just like he was against the Giants.   He was sacked six times, had three turnovers, and the Vikings dropped three more possible picks.

The Eagles offensive line has been a disaster all year, and continues to struggle recognizing blitzes.   You think Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers will have mercy?  How about the Bears defensive line, who has already manhandled Philly?

This loss hardly ends the Eagles season, but it makes the road to the Super Bowl much harder.  Vick will now have to survive takings hits in three straight playoff games, with two games likely on the road.

Coach Andy Reid almost has to rest Vick against the Cowboys, and we suspect other key players like DeSean Jackson could sit as well.   (Vick said he hurt his quad on the first play of the game.)

They may as well have rested Tuesday night.  The crowd never seemed into the game, and the odd atmosphere contributed to a sloppy performance by Philadelphia on both sides of the ball.  Vikings quarterback Joe Webb (195 yards passing, 31 rushing yards and a score) outplayed Vick, all but assuring Tom Brady the MVP.

Sometimes championships aren’t won or lost in the biggest games, but in the weeks in between.  The Eagles’ title hopes took a major body blow Tuesday night from an opponent no one saw coming.

UPDATE: Some highlights from the game right here.

Had someone said the Vikings would even be close in this game and I would have thought they were stoned!

Congrats to Webb! He definitely showed promise. Not sure if he will ever be the answer to the Vikings QB problems but his star shined bright tonight!

With the loss and the horrid way that Vick played tonight, he basically took himself out of the running for MVP.

Cue the Eagles fans to come up with a multitude of excuses. The delayed game, Vick hurt, lack of fans in the stadium. As the saying goes, Any given Sunday. Today strange as it may seem, it belonged to the Vikings!

HE HE HE!!! Looks like ol’ SUPERSTAR Vick showed how he REALLY plays football. Confused and running for his life. Its funny what pressure combined with inside and outside contain does to Vick. It absolutely destroys his game. This is why he played so poorly, QB-wise, in the last few years before getting busted. He is a joke of a QB and I can’t wait until divisional foes begin scheming against him like they did when he was in Atlanta.

  10. desertvike says: Dec 29, 2010 12:22 AM

Awesome game by Joe Webb as he made no mistakes. Very much enjoyed this Vikings victory. Cant wait till next year when the cameramen wont have favre to show 1,000 times a game!

  11. goldsteel says: Dec 29, 2010 12:22 AM

The Vikings should send Roger Goodell a thank you note. There is no way the Vikings pass rush would have been as effective on a snow covered field. Micheal Vick got beat up.

The Eagles looked over matched for most of the night. With the constant pressure forced Vick to throw several interceptions three of which were dropped. At the moment, the Eagles look one and done in the playoffs.

  12. missthemexpos says: Dec 29, 2010 12:24 AM

Best line of the night, with the Vikings in control, was when Chris Collinsworth said he had a feeling that this was how the game would go, and Al Michaels responded by asking who he had for the 5th at Belmont.

  17. jstrizzle says: Dec 29, 2010 12:37 AM

As a Viking fan I really liked what I saw from Webb. He has quite the Arm and showed a lot of poise. I know Eagle fans might stay off the board for a while because they think that this loss might be embarrassing but it really wasn’t. The Vikings played to the potential they have had all season. Look at some of our early season games and we gave a lot of playoff teams a run for their money and came up short because we lost the turnover battle. We played some duds recently because of weather and coaching changes and such.

I think their biggest worry right now should be Asante Samuel’s desire to keep leading with his helmet. I guarantee once playoffs starts if he does that again he is kicked out of the game. That could be a huge downfall.

  21. nfl4ever says: Dec 29, 2010 12:44 AM

    I’ve seen this before.

This looks like the 2002-2006 Vick in Atlanta, off target with his throws, running for his life, getting hit and turning the ball over. Oh sure he’ll seduce you with a great play or escape now and then but he’ll break your heart in the end.

I stated in an earlier post, I think the Eagles really shot their wad vs the Giants, They look like a tired, worn out team that’s lost its collective zip.

One and done in the playoffs regardless of who they play!

  33. agaytan15 says: Dec 29, 2010 1:19 AM

Vick cannot recognize blitzes and change line protections, as that is a basic QB resposibility….face it that guy lacks basic QB skills. All of you who thought he could play the position need to really understand the game.

  34. halftermguv says: Dec 29, 2010 1:24 AM

That’s why they play the game. Its always great to see young players and coaches step up to the task. Congrats to Leslie Frazier and Joe Webb.

It was fun to see MeSean and Co. fall flat on their collective faces. I pray they tie up big bucks in MeSean and Vick. Bunch of clowns.

Props to Joe Webb. Hope you’re the real deal instead of the pretender from the 2nd city in Pennsylvania.

One and done and let the boo parade begin.

Vikes played like a team that wants their interim coach to get the job. GREAT defensive performance, fun to watch.

As an Eagles fan I blame this loss on the playcalling and the bad play of the O-line and receivers. Usually its our defense losing games for us but they only gave up 17 points tonight which should easily be enough for the #1 offense in the NFL to outscore.

  43. vivaronmexico says: Dec 29, 2010 2:15 AM

Starting to get old, in these night nationally televised only game on, only game to bet in Vegas and elsewhere on internet, the HEAVY favorite is a no-show in the vast majority of these games. Not only do they lose routinely but they get blown out on many of these occasions.

Webb played a nice game. He looked pretty smooth and poised, should be one to watch.

Now people can see the difference between Vick and Big Ben. Ben gets hammered every week, and is still able to consistently make the big plays while being harrassed. Vick looked terrible when he couldn’t stand there like a statue and throw the ball. He should have had 3 interceptions. And I believe Brady would collapse in a similar way if he was under that constant pressure. I’ll take Ben in those situations any day.

Does any WR cry more than Jackson?

I was telling a friend while ice fishing yesterday that Joe Webb is the bigger, stronger, perhaps smarter and equally fast version of Vick. Just needs some experience and confidence. First start he blows up like that? Are you kidding me? Vikings fans rejoice, I think we have found our future in Joe Webb. He is EASILY the most athletic qb in the NFL. Ever see his jump on You Tube? Sure just one game, but on the road(for 4 stinking days!) against the Eagles on prime time you have to be impressed. Keep it up Joe! Our season is ending but you give me great hope for the next!

Great defensive game plan. You other teams that will face the Eagles should bow to us for designing the plan to make Vick look like a girl. We beat up the toothless Eagles bad, a regular old fashion butt stomping in their house.

Suggs, Crowder, and a bunch of of other players. But, to give the devil his due, much of last night’s blame goes on the Eagles offensive line. Brady was going to win the MVP in any case. Vick was going to be in second and that will still be the case.

  61. pastabelly says: Dec 29, 2010 8:49 AM

N0, I did not comment on Brady for MVP on Nov7 .

If that’s what you call “blowing up,” then so be it. He played just fine, didn’t make any big mistakes. It was hardly a career-defining performance. I do think Webb shows promise, but let’s not get carried away. Besides, the coaching staff is too dumb to even realize what they have, evidenced by the “favre will start if healthy” article.

Than the next sentence she says….”filthy toads like “importantpftcomment.”

Yep Deb, that’s a polite posting. At least you made me laugh on this cold morning.

    ======================================
Any rookie getting his first start in a place like Philly in prime time and winning without turnovers is pretty much blowing up. Great mobility ,presence and some great, accurate throws. May not have thrown td’s but showed a great presence out there. Made me happy!

On Nov 7 the MVP race was a tie between Antonio Gates, Philip rivers and Arian Foster. I would assume that is why they play the entire season before giving out the awards.
    —-
Like your comment. It’s a shame they have to play a full season when all the awards are given out in week 5.

Also, I’m sick of hearing about the Nov 7 game by others. You can’t base an argument on an outlier and ignore the full body of work s.a. 2 TDS and no INT for 7 straight weeks.

  76. pedsaregoodforsports says: Dec 29, 2010 10:47 AM

you people are hilarious. I as an Eagles fan was angry they got beat and this game proved TWO and ONLY TWO things.

One: MVP will be Tom Brady. Notice I said “will be” and NOT “is”. There is a difference. MVP is like the BCS. You have a bad game at a bad time, and you are out of the running.

Second: The Eagles will be the third seed.

NOTHING else is set. Eagles are done, Vick is terrible, etc etc etc.

Well, folks thats why they play the games. We will see wont we?

    LOL, you people are morons.

Perhaps even better is “Joe Webb is the QB of the future”

    Really? After ONE start?

The Eagles were flat, had a bad game, and did not run the ball enough last night. But what most of you are missing is how this could be a blessing in disguise. This game renders the last game moot, in essence GAURANTEES them a bye week to rest players. Even if they won last night and next week they still needed help to get the bye. Now they can rest all their players and still get a home game. I for one as an Eagles fan, fear no NFC team. The one that would give them the toughest matchup is the Giants. I ahve no doubts they can beat ANYONE in the NFC.

But reading these comments proves how fickle fans are.

And again, proves most of you on here are morons with some of the ridiculous comments and posts about one and done, Vick is terrible, etc.

    Hilarious.

    @smokehouse56 …

ROFL … this is why you shouldn’t post after driving seven hours and taking a lot of flu medicine. But it wasn’t as inconsistent as it seemed. She just showed up from whatever bowel of hell spit her out a few weeks ago and started attacking me right, left, and center for no earthly reason, and telling me to leave PFT. Apparently she has this thing about other women posting on “her” site. Thus my reference to politely posting to those who haven’t done you any harm. Since she’s done nothing but troll after me being rude for weeks, Im now under no obligation to be polite.

    But I’m glad I gave you a laugh. :)

  78. Deb says: Dec 29, 2010 11:15 AM

    @richm2256 …

I haven’t been around because this little thing called Christmas just went by. Guess you missed it. Unlike you, I have a life outside PFT and have been traveling. Ben’s Nevada civil suit has long been awaiting a Supreme Court ruling on jurisdiction. Nothing new there, so I don’t know what you’re blathering about. Favre isn’t anything to me except a player whose grit and enthusiasm I’ve admired. It’s not all about me, you idiot. Many fans genuinely believe Brady has earned the MVP this year regardless of Vick’s performance last night.

I have defended many in the league who’ve been falsely accused of crimes, including sexual assault. Coincidentally, players I’ve defended–from Roethlisberger to Brandon Underwood–have represented different ethnicities. You seem to make constant reference to players’ skin color, so that is your issue, not mine. I’m not the NFL crime reporter. Players are arrested continually, and I don’t have the time or interest to follow every arrest that doesn’t involve my team or high-profile players. I’m not aware of the case you’re citing, but my position on every accusation is that the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence until a case is proved.

Ummmmm….Vick and the Eagles came into this game facing the accusations that they can’t beat GOOD teams, and with Mike Vick proclaiming HIMSELF as the MVP over Brady.

They got their a$$es handed to them by the VIKINGS, with a THIRD STRING QB, at HOME. Apparently they can’t even beat the “soft” teams at this point.

    “Hilarious” indeed.

  81. cleverbob says: Dec 29, 2010 11:49 AM

Good to see you all still have a reason to live even though your own teams are dogsh!t. The Eagles were due for a loss. I’d much rather it happen now than two weeks from now. Hopefully they treat Sunday like the 4th preseason game and sit most of the starters.

  82. pedsaregoodforsports says: Dec 29, 2010 12:24 PM

    @rich:

Really? Hmm they beat Atlanta, and the Giants twice, the legend Manning and the Colts and I would calssify that as beating good teams. But again, you can only beat who you play. Im not gonna sit here and go through thier schedule game by game. They are 10-5 and in the playoffs and have at least one home game and NO NFC team scares me as a fan. so all this gloom and doom after one bad showing IS HILARIOUS.
Last I checked everyone in the NFL gets paid to play. So bad losses and let downs happen.

And btw you are one of the morons i was referring to with some of your posts.

    @ eddy,

Ahaha judging by your reply I can see you are very uneducated and brainwashed by big brother and mainstream media. Maybe if you did some research instead of having your thoughts TOLD to you, youd become very enlightened as to the TRUTH. But I really dont have time to hold your hand.

Actually, Im not being sarcastic. Not to mention the fact that if you did ANY research and found out the TRUTH, instead of following the leader, you might be shocked. The truth, is the medical and scientific communities data, backs it up. So before you wanna call someone an idiot, you better know what you are talking about.

    Which you clearly do not.

Ive wasted too much time on this already.

As a Falcons fan I was just waiting till Philly got a taste of what having Vick as a quarterback is REALLY like. Good luck with that guys, you will be calling for Kolb like I was calling for Shaub at some point next season.

  90. kordellvick7 says: Jan 3, 2011 2:25 PM

Who says Vick ever deserved MVP consideration? I mean other than eagles fans and some jock sniffing media.

When they start handing out mvp consideration for 5 games, let me know.

  91. kordellvick7 says: Jan 3, 2011 2:32 PM

“I was telling a friend while ice fishing yesterday that Joe Webb is the bigger, stronger, perhaps smarter and equally fast version of Vick.”

Well if that ain’t damning with faint praise I don’t know what is.
