Jim Harbaugh-to-49ers speculation heats up

Jim Harbaugh, Frank Beamer

Multiple reports indicate that Trent Baalke will be promoted to G.M. of the 49ers, with Comcast Bay Area’s Mindi Bach the latest to say that “Baalke is the guy.”

A formal interview is expected soon, possibly Saturday according to Matt Maiocco. The 49ers are moving quickly, possibly because they know what head coach they want Baalke to hire.

“There is a firm belief among NFL insiders — and some folks at Stanford — that Baalke will be able to deliver Jim Harbaugh to be the 49ers’ head coach,” Maiocco writes.
Harbaugh coaches his final game for Stanford on January 3, and there is speculation that the 49ers will move quickly to hire him.  Our pals at CFT write that Harbaugh won’t talk about possible NFL jobs in the buildup to the Orange Bowl.  But he didn’t deny interest.
“I don’t want to put a timeline on it,” Harbaugh said when asked about making a decision about his future.
ESPN’s John Clayton believes the 49ers fired Mike Singletary after Week 16 in part to get a headstart on pursuing Harbaugh.

The franchise is in a shambles so what do you do so it will get better ? Promote one of the guys who made the mess in the first place. I sense at least another 3 or 4 years of suckitude for the 9ers.

Don’t do it, Jim. Better offers will come. The owner is a retard who is about to hire Balki from Perfect Strangers as GM.

You can do better. I promise.

Harbaugh should go to Michigan and tell Baalke-“sorry cuzzin.”

Nooooooooooooooo. He’s supposed to go coach Michigan………..

Where the hell is that Brinks truck?

    PLEASE JIM, PLEEEEAAAASEEEE…..LEAVE STANFORD.

Once you do that, Luck is declaring for the draft, and my Panthers will get the Franchise QB we need.

I dont want Locker, Newton, or Mallet.

–Are you a niners fan? Why root against your own team? You can pray for a new owner all you want, but it isn’t going to happen. Get a good coach and new GM and go from there.

  9. sdw2001 says: Dec 30, 2010 11:23 AM

Speaking of which, I can’t stand all the retard fans who say “we need a new owner or nothing will change!”

It’s not going to happen. Period. Get used to the owner, and direct your prayers towards getting a great coach. Slamming the owner is pointless, especially considering the team has a good deal of talent. The coaching has been the problem.

Im tired of people blaming Baalke for the 49ers mess up. It wasnt his fault he was the talent evaluator. Not GM, that was McClueless job to structure the Niners front office and he couldnt.

I believe the Niners spoke to Harbaugh and JH told the 9ers organization he wanted a bit more control over signs and trades with players to build his team. And the only way that could happen with out Jed contradicting himself in the public eye is to hire a GM like Baalke who will allow that to happen. Baalke would probably still have the final ok with drafting and signing players but JH will def be able to give his 2-cents on the type of players he want to help structure HIS team.

30 years ago this franchise was the gold standard for the rest of the NFL and they stayed that way for a long time. Now it just flat out stinks, and that is sad.

  14. chrismatthewsucks says: Dec 30, 2010 11:49 AM

hahaha no coach wants to coach the niners!! they have the best MLB and Possibly the best TE and they suck.

49ers are the Ford Focus of cars.

  15. sterilizecromartie says: Dec 30, 2010 11:49 AM

Andrew Luck to Carolina. John Fox fired. Jim Harbaugh to Carolina to replace him.

Why wouldn’t he take the Panthers HC job where he can continue coaching his blue-chip QB Luck.

  16. moneyman95 says: Dec 30, 2010 11:53 AM

Give Baalke a chance. He had a good draft in a short time of preparation in 2010. If he can deliver on Harbaugh, that is a start especially since Harbaugh is expected attention on just about every other opening. The 49ers need a young energetic coach, not a retread. If he turns out to be like his brother John, the 49ers will be just fine.

  17. brooklynninerfan19 says: Dec 30, 2010 11:55 AM

Every organization has its ups and downs. Niners started falling because of financial reasons and then further declined because of front office. But rectifying the problem with JH at HC, hiring new defensive coordinator*Wade Phillips), and building from the draft will get us back on track.

ring 6 in the near future..!!! ;)

  18. flyingchopstix says: Dec 30, 2010 12:29 PM

Still think michigan….. Their are a lot better NFL jobs, than the 49ers. Denver is a good fit, along with Carolina…. Theirs always some crazy firing right after the season, that opens up a good job….

  19. skoobyfl says: Dec 30, 2010 12:30 PM

Luck is entering the draft for sure now, hopefully the Bills move up to pick him.

  20. Keyser Söze says: Dec 30, 2010 12:30 PM

Harbaugh needs to stay away from the Bay Area NFL teams. Carolina is where he is needed. Along with his QB…

  21. ninerfaithful says: Dec 30, 2010 12:34 PM

30 years ago, when won a Super bowl in 95′ what are you talking about? We have been a joke for a while now just like we were before another Stanford coach came along and that turned out pretty good for us. There is plenty of intrigue for Harbaugh to take the 49ers back to the Glory days. Harbaugh played QB against those great 49er teams, he knows and respects what they were about and he can be the man to bring them back to it and go down in history. Why the hell would he coach the Carolina Panthers, the Niners will do everything they can to get Andrew Luck I guarantee it, even if it means giving up a couple 1st round picks and a player or two. It’d be totally worth it, we have a few holes but the Rams do to and they are going to the playoffs. We are the most talented team in the NFC West by far except at the Quarterback position. Our offensive line struggled this year but Harbaugh knows to give help to the lineman something Singletary didn’t understand. I can feel the momentum building, Harbaugh will be the next great coach of the 49ers within a couple weeks.

  22. radrntn says: Dec 30, 2010 12:42 PM

niners should sign him, and trade two #1’s for the first round pick in the draft to get luck.

Then both Harbaugh and Luck, can go roast marshmallows together as there will be no nfl in 2011.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

I forgot the Broncos are just like the Patriots and the Steelers. When comparing the Niners and the Broncos, why wouldn’t Harbaugh want the SF job? He can keep his family right where they are in the Bay Area, battle Pete Carroll in the division again, go to a team with more talent, and bring in and develop the quarterback he wants. Or he could go to the Broncos who have just gotten rid of an All-Pro QB, WR, and RB and be locked into having Tebow as your QB.

Ravens are always well coached, and I think thats wat SF needs – some good solid coaching, without the bull that Singletary spewed

You really should STFU because it’s obvious you know nothing about the organization. Baalke hasn’t been in the position of making any of the major decisions for this organization until just before this years draft. Even then we knew what we were going to do on draft day and drafted the players we wanted. So how has he made the mess or contributed to it with no power? Just another idiotic fan who knows nothing about the other teams but insist on posting comments out the anus.

So, umm……yeah. No sense really reacting to the rest of your post, since it’s based on a assumption you made with absolutely no facts behind it.

And since your second post kind of plays off the first, guess that one is kind of moot too.

    Well……um……..Hey, great point though!

    *awkward*

  27. babyjesus69 says: Dec 30, 2010 12:57 PM

Why would Harbaugh be interested in SF? niners have a good amount of talent outside of qb, they’re in the worst division in sports so winning it now is very very possible and they have history. But above all else what make the niners job attractive over every other nfl job out there is that it’s local. Harbaugh doesn’t have to uproot his family to take the job. His kids stay in the same school and his wife doesn’t have to leave her friends behind. If Baalke is hired Harbaugh better be coming right behind him or nothing has changed in frisco

  28. mayfieldroadboy says: Dec 30, 2010 12:59 PM

Yes, the 49ers were the gold standard when Eddie, Policy, et al kept the umbilical cord tied to Youngstown, Ohio. Papa died and Eddie lost out on the ownership of the team; this proves the daughter is never groomed to be the “boss”. Eddie went the way of the disgraced son and Denise and her husband just play at making decisions for a team for which they have no regard; her getting ownership of the team was just a pissing contest between brother and sister. The Yorks now know they cannot control the team, and their abyssmal decisions as owners have been on a par with Lerner of Cleveland. Somehow, I think the Yorks may turn to a once-favored son like Mike Holmgren who has connections to the 49ers when the team was the near the epicenter of Papa DeBartolo’s tentacled power and influence. Holmgren would assume control over the team, be its coach, and walk in the shoes of the Yorks making Holmgren, for all intents and purposes, a co-owner. Much the same as in Cleveland, but SanFran has a much better climate and much better food.

3 main reasons he wouldn’t take the Carolina job over SF:
    1)Carolina is a dump
2)They are in a much worse situation than the 49ers (The 49ers talent is much better)
    3)… Carolina is a dump

LOL, I am not for hiring Jim, BUT at least the 49ers have talent. I can’t think of more then 2 players with some sort of upside on the Broncos. Horrible franchise, since Elway and FYI they have Tebow who is more like Alex Smith lol.

  32. chowtime888 says: Dec 30, 2010 3:05 PM

    Sterilizecromartie,

If Carolina is a dump then why are we in the top half of the league in attendance?

Also, you say the 49ers have more talent than we do.

    This is all hilarious because

  33. chowtime888 says: Dec 30, 2010 3:06 PM

    WE BEAT YOU.

Carolina may have the #1 pick but we have enough to beat the “talented” 49ers.

  34. babyjesus69 says: Dec 30, 2010 4:13 PM

that says nothing about talent chowtime. based on your argument then the bengals have more talent than the ravens cause they beat them. don’t be angry cause the more attractive option for harbaugh is frisco, not carolina or denver. if anything I’m jealous that you guys have cowher on your radar. That’s HUGE for you guys if you get him. More so than any other coach

@ Chowtime- I made the comment, not sterilizecromartie… Indeed you beat us, but that does not mean we don’t have more talent than you.. The Pats got their a$$ kicked by the browns earlier this season, does that mean the Browns are more talented? If the Niners had a QB they would have ran the Panthers into the ground like 13 other teams have done… Your attendance is through the roof because your state is a s*** hole… You average over 70,000 fans a game because there is nothing better to do than to watch your home team get ran almost every week… Go to Carolina, a bland boring state (yes I’ve been there), or stay close to your current location, and go to one of the US’s top cities.. Doesn’t sound like a tough decision for Harbaugh if you ask me..

  38. cup1981 says: Dec 30, 2010 10:13 PM

That’s funny, the best coach the Niners ever had, Bill Walsh, left and wound up in Stanford a few years later and stunk it up. Now Stanford’s best coach, arguably, Jim Harbaugh may leave an organization that he took from a 1 – 11 record in 2006 to an 11 – 1 record in 2010 might go to the Niners, interesting lol.

Seriously though DO NOT DO IT Jim. This team is in shambles and they will not give you 3 years to turn it around like Stanford did. You will tarnish what could be a stellar career. Hang out at Stanford one more year and await a better opportunity! Just my 2 cents.

  40. damachine says: Dec 31, 2010 1:41 AM

Here’s why he’s a better fit for Carolina… because they lack ANY History… Shortest book in the NFL is “The History of the Carolina Panthers”… the 49ers would never be known for Harbaugh no matter how well he did.. they already had Montana, Young and Bill Walsh.. he’d be standing in their shadows the entire time, just like Singletary. Same for the Broncos, they already had their Elway and Shanahan.. If he wants to establish a “Legacy” and be known for greatness then his best chance is to take the Panthers and turn them into a Real NFL team.. and of course the 1st pick in the Draft being Luck, he gets his franchise QB.

  41. catdaddy89 says: Jan 1, 2011 11:12 PM

    @smarterthana5thgrader-Carolina is a dump??
According to Forbes, the Carolina Panthers are the 17th most valuable franchise in all of sports worth an estimated $1.05 billion, not to bad for a dump. meanwhile, the 49ers are sitting @37th worth a $875 million. But I guess this can can be attributed to the fact that we have nothing else to do but watch our team get beat 8 times a year. “If the Niners had a QB they would have ran the Panthers into the ground like 13 other teams have done.” And if we played the 49ers 19 times a year we’d win the super bowl. And if I owned a rocket I’d go to the moon. See how this works? The fact remains, that we beat you, you’re bitter about it, our franchise is worth more, we’ve accomplished more during the same time we’ve been in the league then you. So next time you and your Prius find yourselves in the Queen City stop in for some southern hospitality and watch Harbaugh and Luck tear it up a little bit for the Panthers.
