Multiple reports indicate that Trent Baalke will be promoted to G.M. of the 49ers, with Comcast Bay Area’s Mindi Bach the latest to say that “Baalke is the guy.”
A formal interview is expected soon, possibly Saturday according to Matt Maiocco. The 49ers are moving quickly, possibly because they know what head coach they want Baalke to hire.
“There is a firm belief among NFL insiders — and some folks at Stanford — that Baalke will be able to deliver Jim Harbaugh to be the 49ers’ head coach,” Maiocco writes.
Harbaugh coaches his final game for Stanford on January 3, and there is speculation that the 49ers will move quickly to hire him. Our pals at CFT write that Harbaugh won’t talk about possible NFL jobs
in the buildup to the Orange Bowl. But he didn’t deny interest.
“I don’t want to put a timeline on it,” Harbaugh said when asked about making a decision about his future.
ESPN’s John Clayton believes the 49ers fired Mike Singletary after Week 16 in part to get a headstart
on pursuing Harbaugh.
