Personally, I think Frazier deserves a shot with the Vikings. Not only has he navigated all of the problems that have poped up recently, but he has the respect of the players, learned from a good coaching system, and also sounds like a guy who is honest and who can be taken at face value when he speaks.

For all of those who are pulling for Gruden… why!? What has the guy done except win a title with Dungy’s team? If he was so great, why has he been in the booth all this time. The guy is personality, not a coach.

Without a stadium deal and some definitive idea about where they'll be playing over the next five years, I doubt the Vikings could attract a Cowher-type coach ... certainly not Cowher himself. Of course, if you throw enough money at someone, anything is possible. But with so many coaching vacancies, the "name" coaches will have a lot of options this year.

Yes, it is a form of Affirmative Action. Unfortunately, our society has required Affirmative Action programs to level the playing field and give qualified minority candidates an opportunity for consideration--as gbfanforever has so eloquently explained. My only argument here is that when a team is committed to promoting from within its own coaching ranks, it doesn't benefit anyone to force the owner to conduct token interviews that won't result in a hire (if that is the requirement).

@gbfanforever ...

I've always admired Favre's grit and enthusiasm on the field no matter what uniform he was wearing--which is not an endorsement of his personal character. If you can overlook that, you might find you agree with more of my posts than you realize :)

I'm not sure if any of the big name coaching candidates would walk into this job without incredible compensation. Next year the vikings will have a very different looking roster without a big qb and even more questions about stadiums and possible relocation. They will probably also be the 4th most talented team in the nfc north next season. It just isn't as ideal a scenario for the coaching prospects as the other open gigs out there.

I tend to favor programs such as the Rooney Rule that create a more even playing field in hiring.
—————————————————–
So in essence you do not believe that minority candidates can stand on just their own merits and that they need extra help to be considered head coaches, am I correct?

This is nothing more than a form of affirmative action.
----------------------------------------------------

This is a very tired, worn out, lazy argument that I'm just sick of hearing. I would like to mention that I'm shocked to agree with Deb on something but the notion that people are always hired based on who has the greatest "merits" is a farce perpetuated by Rush. For too many american employers, an important merit is being white. I used to think that that sure, the best qualified people get the job and then I would see the study results every year where identical resumes are sent out to employers, some with caucasian sounding names and some with african american sounding names. The resumes with caucasian sounding names get call backs usually at a 60-70% greater clip. I would love it if the league didn't need a rule to help level the playing field for black coaches with the same credentials as white coaches, but sadly it seems they do.

Frazier is well respected because he is honest, consistent, hard working, and played in the NFL. Players are going to play hard for him. He's going to work hard for the players. I think he's worthy of the position. It's anybody's guess how it will turn out but you really can't question the hire.

@ctownlegend Ha, Joe Webb or a draft pick, it doesn't matter to me. If Wilf is willing to pay Favre $20 mill dont you think he can find a QB? I do. The O line needs an upgrade at center and guard and with Chilly gone that will be adressed in the draft or in free agency.

@harrisonhits2 NOPE LOL

@canadianvikingfaniii The line is good minus Harrera and Sulivan, The LB's and D backs do need a substantial upgrade, all of which I would include in a good off-season. Don't worry about AD and Greenway going anywhere. Peterson still has another year left on his contract and the Star Trib has long reported that Greenway is a top off-season priority.

The Rooney Rule forces owners to interview minority candidates before making a coaching hire. What about interviewing a minority is racist? All these comments sound like a bunch of racist bitching and moaning. Any Black coach in the league has got the job because he is the best coach for the job, there is too much money tied up in NFL franchises to think otherwise. For years the NFL has been a good ol' boys club of rich white guys who hire white coaches and don't give minority coaches a chance. Get your head out of your asses PFT readers.

If they hire Gruden I'll vomit. Nobody can say that Frazier is the answer yet either. 6 games, 2 of which they were embarassed? I can't speak for the Eagles game either. It's not unheard of for a favorite to get beat towards the end of the season when they don't respect the team they're playing. Lets see what happens when they play the Lions, and then make a decision(Ziggy). I like Frazier, but not so much that I'd settle for a coach without bringing in an established veteran, like Cowher. I guess if they decide to keep Frazier, they had better bring in a talent guru, like a Parcells(only kidding) or a Dungy to oversee all operations. Or the CBA won't get settled and I've just wasted 3 minutes typing.

I like the Vikings but don't see them as contenders for a couple of years now. The Defense is ancient. They need 2 young cornerbacks and 2 new young DT's. Winfield is still good, but won't last too much longer. Plus their Safety Williams sucks. The Bengals let him walk for a reason. By the time the Defense is overhauled AP will be on the decline. Next year will be a re-building season.

therealjcannon says:

This team is a good off season away from being Super Bowl contenders again next year.
---------------------------
Nope. A new offensive line is needed. Steve Hutchinson is not what he was last year, he still probably has a few years left in his tank but not anywhere near where he was. Bryant McKinnie needs to go. He is a useless passblocker. Phil Loadholt is absolutely atrocious, be it penalties or pass blocking. John Sullivan is too small and is easily beat 1 on 1. Anthony Herrera is a good starter but who knows after this season ending injury.

We need a replacement for Ben Leber, depth at the each LB position. Depth at Safety, the Vikes need to dump Madieu Williams. Need a new receiver to replace Bernard Berrian, we might not even bring back Sidney Rice seeing how injury prone he is. Good or not, you can't produce if you're not on the field.

Above all we need to resign Adrian Peterson and Chad Greenway.

I tend to favor programs such as the Rooney Rule that create a more even playing field in hiring. But if I understand it, the Vikes could make Frazier permanent without having to interview other candidates. However, the Cowboys would be required to interview minority candidates before making Garrett permanent. Why? What's the purpose of requiring a team that's already decided to hire from within to grant token interviews with minorities? Sometimes common sense needs to apply.

What would it take to turn Webb into a solid West Coast QB? Surely Favre isn't the only hope if the Vikes remain committed to that system.
