Baalke confident about chances after interviewing for G.M. job

Jed York AP

We’ve been reporting all week that 49ers President Jed York will promote Trent Baalke to general manager after the 49ers conducted some cursory interviews with out-of-work personnel guys.

Baalke confirmed to the Associated Press Sunday that his interview occurred Saturday.  He sounded confident about his chances, and an announcement about Baalke getting the gig could come as soon as Monday.

The 49ers are expected to go hard after Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.  The University of Michigan could be San Francisco’s primary competition for Harbaugh.

    Where do these ideas come from? Why would Jim take a job that has a weak GM who has more pull with Jed? That is a setup for failure! Niners are looking to go cheap and that can be seen by their (Jed’s) choice for GM…
    C’mon Man!!!

    Sure I read somewhere that Sing was on $5m a year – not exactly cheap.

    Ultimately, getting a coaching staff that gets results is the important thing – so the GM appointment is important, but the HC appointment is far more important.

    He has to be given the authority to get whichever coaches he wants. And the backing.

    But as Baltimore, Atlanta, etc, should highlight to you – big money, big names is not the only way to get success. Getting the right name is the only thing that matters.

    And only results will determine if it’s correct.

    I’ve got a feeling they’ll go with a big name though at HC – as they need to attract backing for new stadium.

    49ers won another meaningless game today. had they fired dingleberry earlier they might had a chance to made the playoff. so many bad decision by this organization with the alex smith pick, letting go of many OC… had they took the lost on smith like the raiders did with Jbust they might of had a chance at Rodger, Cutler and Flacco .

    Whether the GM will be the “sexy pick” or the Scotty McCluess fill in. Something has got to turn around. I don’t really buy the fact that Jed is trying to act like the GM will make the decision on his own to hire the coach. All i know is that Greg Manusky is an over hyped sub par D-Coordinator. He makes these horrible coverage plays that puts the 49er’s in bad situations to get out of. If they can’t get Harbaugh to bite on “Baalke’s bite.” Why not go after Billick and give Marvin Lewis a phone call and see if he wants to take over as the D-Coordinator. Though that is not the only hope who I would have as a coach, it was an example. And copying former teams set ups of coaches and coordinators seemed to play out well for KC this year by the looks of things. Oh and by the way get a QB who is a worth a damn and doesn’t get rattled by the site of a blitz. And the talks of passing up on Aarron Rodgers. There is no way in hell he would have been the same player he is today. You look at the o-line’s over the past 4 years before this year, he would have been minced meat with more concussions that just the 2 he had this year. He sat out 2 years behind one of the better QB’s of all time so i think that helped his game out a little bit.

    The Bills made a better choice at GM than what the Niners will possibly end up with.

    Haraugh is the sexy hire. Billick with Marvin Lewis is a solid plan b. With the 7th pick the niners are for sure gonna get Newton, Locker, Gabbert or Mallet. Now with zona at 5 I’m praying they don’t trade up for Luck

    Wow, fire Sing earlier and we may have had a chance?.. One game with Tomsula and you think he could have lead us to the Playoffs? Get real man… The fact remains, any QB would have failed on this team because of the weak O-Line it has. Rogers wouldn’t be nearly as good as he is, and neither would Flacco or Cutler. Every playoff team has a good QB, and every good QB has a good O-Line. I’m not saying Smith is a good QB by any means, but don’t expect change without getting some proven veterans on the O-Line…

    @cytofed

    I think someone has already corrected your general idea, but I’m still going to tell you that you are crazy if you think the Raiders handled Russell that much better than the 49ers handled Smith. More so, a lot of the scenarios you pointed out: “they might of had a chance at Rodger, Cutler” are simply incorrect due to timing. Even Flacco, who we could have possibly drafted if we had left Smith go, was a surprise. You can’t hold everyone who passed on him accountable, just like Tom Brady.
