@nesuperfan I find it amazing that the word minority automatically refers to an african-american. Why doesn’t that refer to asian, female, gay, mexican, or pacific islander? Does each and every minority need their own rule or does the NFL only care about hiring more black coaches and to hell with every one else?

If the NFL is going to require minorities to be interviewed…ALL minorities should be interviewed.

You obviously are missing the point by many posters how the Rooney Rule is one-sided. Here, a minority candidate was hired without a single white candidate being interviewed, which is just as wrong as cutting out any black candidates.

serapheem, the rule is not that you have to interview every minority, only one, any one…Frazier qualifies. They don’t need to interview anyone else, and why would they when they are happy with him?

Again, hiring him fits the rule…your delicate sense of the color spectrum aside.

@nesuperfan common sense tells me that blacks are not the only minority. The stance that its OK as long as a black person was interviewed or hired is a very exclusionary view in my opinion and in direct opposition to the spirit of the rule.

This is a good move for a once proud team. Now the team needs a solid GM in Minn., not NY. If the owners neglect the structure of the organization as was done when Chilly was in charge then the downward spiral will continue. The Vikings are looking for a hand out from the citizens of the state for their billionaire owners. This needs to change. Unless they are so dumb up that way they might even think an old man like Lil’ Brett can rescue them. Oh wait….

@therealjcannon Finfan did not suggest that Frazier was hired because of his race. You must have misunderstood his comment. He did imply that the Vikings did not have to honor the Rooney Rule because they hired a minority. You said it yourself, “The rule was put in place because for years white owners would only hire white coaches with out giving minority coaching candidates, who were just as qualified, if not more qualified, a chance and it STILL CONTINUES TODAY.” Yes, it still continues, and it doesn’t matter if the rule is there or not. Owners are going to hire whomever they wish, regardless of the rule. They interview minorities for two reasons: 1. Because they are actually interested in their ability to be a head coach, or 2. To satisfy the Rooney Rule. #2 the biggest reason, IMHO. The Rooney Rule does not level the playing field one bit. It merely gives minority coaches experience at interviewing for HC vacancies.

@Congratulations to Frazier, who seemed to be a calming influence in a difficult situation. But Ambrose, I’m not sure how naming him head coach will help the Vikes secure a stadium deal. Like you, I’d hate to see this franchise move. I’m vehemently opposed to ripping sports teams away from loyal fans. But in this economic environment, it’s also understandable that officials would have trouble selling a tax-supported stadium deal. Just hope something gets worked out for them soon. This is a talented team. It would be nice if they were able to compete next year without so many distractions–assuming the league itself competes next year.

The Vikings seem to groom future Super Bowl Champion coaches and let them go.. Tony Dungy,Brian Billick and Mike Tomlin. Glad we kept Frazier, see if he takes us to the top.

Brad Childress created his own “raw deal.”

He was a systems guy. He believed his system was the best and would not budge from that idea. If things were not going right, it was because the players could not perform how his system called on them to do rather than recognizing a player’s strength and create a plan around that. This idea only works as long as wins keep coming.

Honest to God!!! Every time there is a post about Leslie Frazier there has to be dozens of “Do they have to interview a white guy?” posts. We get it!! It’s the Rooney rule, it’s not perfect, but it is what it is!! If you want to complain about something complain about the absurdly low number of black head coaches in the history of the NFL. Sheesh

@finfan the fact you even brought up Fraziers race, when it had nothing to do with his hire shows that the Rooney Rule still needs to be in place. The rule was put in place because for years white owners would only hire white coaches with out giving minority coaching candidates, who were just as qualified, if not more qualified, a chance and it still continues today. Having the Rooney Rule is a good thing if you believe in diversity and leveling the playing field, bad if you don’t.

Should have had to interview at least one Caucasian American before making a decision. Who knows, the interview process might have been fixed such that Frazier was good as hired from the beginning. Ask Jerrah Jonz if he still has to interview Ray Sherman even though he wants to hire Jason Garrett.

This a good move. I think this will stabilize this club faster than anything esle they can do right now, and maybe even hasten the new stadium deal. I do not want the Vikings to relocate. That having been said….GO PACK!

I wanted Harbaugh or Gruden but this is a good hire. On a team that has become known for Soap Opera like drama a Coach whith a consistently level head who has the respect of all the players and coaches is key to the teams future success.

You would think so, but with Frazier being a minority candidate maybe they didn’t have to. If this was the case as a menber of the minority, I feel that is wrong!
Good luck Frazier, you’re definately going to need it…..not to mention a QB, some DB’s and more! The one good thing he has going for him is that he knows the roster1

I would hardly point to veteran attendance at the OTA’s as a factor in the Viking season. That’s like pointing out the deck chairs aren’t in a straight line as the Titanic takes on water.

After so many players were thrown under the bus by the micro manager, Col Klink, you could begin to understand why they might want to play harder for Frazier. But is that enough to just hand him the HC job? Maybe he promised not to sell his Superbowl tickets or bang the team admin Assistants like the previous coaches, that itself would be an instant upgrade independent of his ability to, you know, actually coach a pro football team. If the Viking’s history is any indication, they usually make the wrong choice for the wrong reasons and it will take them about another 5 years to figure that out. Maybe by then, they will have found their franchise QB.

Looks like the Rooney rule only applies to black men. How come they don’t have to interview we native Americans, Hispanics and Asians. We are minorities also, which by the way is also the highly despised white man.

They better interview some white people. Or at least ask 5-10 of them who turn it down because they know Frazier is their man. This is the stupidest rule of all time. When are they going to get rid of the “Rooney Rule” that Dan Rooney doesn’t even agree with?
