49ers GM choices down to Michael Lombardi, Trent Baalke

San Francisco President Jed York has decided to hire either Trent Baalke or Michael Lombardi as general manager and will reportedly make a decision tonight or tomorrow morning.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that although Baalke has always been considered the leading candidate, York has come away impressed after multiple interviews with Lombardi.

As we noted yesterday, Lombardi’s relationship with Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh could give him an edge, as there’s a feeling that the way to land Harbaugh is to hire Lombardi.

Lombardi, however, has been saying that he’s not a candidate and the job will go to Baalke.

The 49ers have also interviewed former Rams executive Tony Softli, former Broncos G.M. Ted Sundquist and former Saints executive Rick Mueller. But it will come down to Baalke or Lombardi, and a decision will come soon.

  1. Both gutless plays. Once again, the Yorks take the cheap way out. No stroke of inspiration here. Maybe Richie Kotite or Wayne Fontes are available to coach the team.

  2. York could care less who his GM is. He wants Harbaugh as coach, and regardless of what he says it is essentially Jed hiring the coach by way of the GM. Lombardi gives him his best chance to land Harbaugh. It will probably also give him the best shot at Gruden if Harbaugh goes elsewhere

  3. Niners get Lombardi and then harbaugh and luck will get you another Lombardi!!!

    Niners Forever

Baalke go see if cousin Larry will give u a job making gyros

  4. Jed has a soft spot for Lombardi. “He reminds me so much of my Uncle Eddie. Except for the glasses. And the rap sheet.”.
