The Yorks hired Baalke because he is a yes men. Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick both advised Jed to pass on Trent and he hired him anyway…even after hearing that Jim Harbough would go to niners if Lombardi was hired. Yorks don’t want to give up an ounce of control. Lombardi would of expected them to give it up. Jed played the part of I am searching when it was all just for show. He never had any intention of hiring anyone but Trent. Get ready for another crummy season.

Lombardi had it locked up but then he did his own version of the dance of joy that was embarrassing to say the least so Jed had to go with baalke, plus cousin Larry will head up the scouting department now so it is a win win all around.

Kind of ironic that he went with the guy he knew very well in baalke as opposed to Lombardi who was a ‘perfect stranger’ before the interviews.

@goldrush36 – Holmgren is the President of the Browns. He’s the authority on football decisions within the organization. He hired Tom Hecket as GM, presumably b/c he’s smart enough to know his limitations. In SF, Jed York is making mgmt. decisions. I can’t see how this works out well for the whine and cheese crowd.

PS – Baalke is one of the better scouts in the league. With Marathe handling contracts and (assumed) Harbaugh coaching, Baalke’s key duties will be scouting and managing clubhouse personnel, something he’s been doing for months.

Wow, impressive how few of the people posting here have NO CLUE what is going on.

Harbaugh is NOT going to Michigan. It’s Niners or Stanford, all indications point that way.

Harbaugh has signed off on Baalke as GM, likely because he will want to have significant inut on personnel; anyone who has watched Satnford over the last couple years knows this is good thing.

Baalke is close with Thomas Dimitroff, the Flacons GM and a model of what Jed is looking for: a GM who works in tandem with the HC. Both Dimitroff and Baalke have ties with Bill Parcells, who who may even be consulted later on.

Yes, I think the 49ers should have shaken the FO up more, but if Harbaugh comes with Baalke, there’s no reason to doom it before giving it a chance.

Funny how people complain about Baalke when a year ago they didn’t even know his name. He didn’t create the mess in SF, the Yorks and McClueless did. It’s ok though because within the next two days, when Harbaugh signs, fans will praise him.

College ties are overrated; the networking done in the real world counts way more. Harbaugh is not going to Miami because he won’t have as much control with Ireland there. Seriously, does Michigan alum Ross feel all that great about having signed off on drafting Long and Henne? Speaking of Michigan, RichRod left that program in such a mess it would take years for Harbaugh, who is not a spread offense guy, to undo it. Baalke is weak; Harbaugh will be the one really calling the football shots in San Fran.

@goldrush36, you’re missing the point. York claims to be frustrated with the current direction of the team, and then he promotes from within. Really? He “interviews” a couple of mediocre non-candidates and expects the fans to be so dumb they won’t see through his plan to hire his lackey from the beginning. He’s running this team into the ground, and expecting that a bit of PR is going to get the fans on his side. It sucks to be a 49er fan right now!!

I honestly believed Jed York at his press conference last week. He talked about hiring a GM and letting him hire a coach. His plan, obviously to hire Baalke. His plan to create a false sense of hope amongst the 49er faithful. That we (49er fans) would finally get a proven sucessful football man in the front office. This process was a joke!! If a G.M was the primary goal ? and that person alone would hire a coach. Then why have the 49ers been going hard after Harbaugh ?? why was Jed planning to interview Marvin Lewis? why did they ask for permission to speak to Hue Jackson ?? All of which done before the announcement of Baalke.
Baalke was the plan from square one, Jed, Do you think were stupid ? if you pretend to include Eddie D, that we will believe you. Wow

@Latopia Baalke had nothing at all to do with bringing in Alex Smith. he actually wasn’t even on the staff until Alex was already drafted. Until this year, he was simply the VP of Personnel, and had zero real influence. Get your facts straight. He was also able to get Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis extended. He may not be the greatest answer, but he certainly can’t be worse than McGloughan. Also who exactly can you think of that is such a great GM that is willing to leave their cushy jobs now? Before you go there, Holmgren was a terrible GM in Seattle and they didn’t start going anywhere until he stepped down to just coaching. Other than bringing in McCoy he hasn’t done much in Cleveland yet either.

The reason Harbaugh would sign off on either is simple, the 49ers will Grant Harbaugh full power over Draft day decisions, and he would have input on free agent signings as well as control over roster decisions.

If York was smart he would bring on Lombardi in some capacity as well as keeping Baalke. Nothing wrong with a more robust front office. I have a feeling this coaching search is going to go the way of the Bears offensive coordinator search last year.

Questions: Why? Why? Why?

Why would arguably the hottest coaching property in the league “sign off” on a GM who has ZERO credibility identifying franchise QBs (Alex Smith?) and can offer NO guarantee to trade, draft, buy one?

If proximity or not uprooting his family was that big a factor, why not give Dean Spanos a call where the Chargers already have more talent and a franchise-type QB in Rivers?

With Carolina unlikely to pass on Luck, why pass on a giftwrapped opportunity to shepherd The Prodigy to NFL success on a team perhaps 1 star quarterback away from significant improvement?

The only way this makes sense?

Harbaugh is making the same mistake preseason experts made: overrating talent.

Specifically, San Francisco’s.
