In fact Laettner was quoted as saying the BUSINESS (BD Ventures) didn’t have the money to pay Shawne Merriman’s business (S.M. Real Estate) back due to the economy.

Do you really think anybody would leave themselves personally liable for that kind of money in a business deal?

@joetoronto Sure they can, but even then, after a few protected assets, everything else they own would be fair game to satisfy the debt.

@realitypolice While that is true, often loans are made and guaranteed by the individual, outside of the protected business entity. I have had such business loans myself…from a bank. The corporation is protected from being sued, but the loan is often not part of that protection.

The story lists the names of the principals involved because the writer knows people reading it will only be interested in the celebrity names attached to the case.

No one runs a real estate enterprise as a sole proprietorship (no corporation).

I guarantee if you read the actual judgement (slowly, as you suggest) you will find out that not only is the judgement against corporations wholly owned by Laettner and Davis, but Merriman also probably filed the suit as a corporate entity.

That sound you hear is the short bus running over your stupid ass.

Laettner is from Buffalo but he lives in Jacksonville, Fl. A news story recently had Laettner signing autographs at the Jacksonville Giants (Jax’s semi-pro basketball team). Maybe he needs to do a little more of this so he canraise some dough!

Laettner, et al, will simply put whatever corporate entity that judgement is against into bankruptcy.

Maybe, some day years from now, Merriman will receive pennies on the dollar from that judgement.
