Williams Wall expected to break up

Pat Williams

The Vikings of the last six years weren’t defined by their rotating quarterbacks or even Adrian Peterson, but the massive run-stopping force of Pat Williams and Kevin Williams in the middle of their defense.

With Pat Williams a free agent after the season, it’s expected that the Williams Wall will finally be broken up.

“From Day 1, we’ve been best friends, practically brothers from the jump,” said Kevin Williams via the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “Those things just made us closer and just appreciate each other even more.”

Opponents hated facing the Williams Wall, but all good things must end.  Pat Williams, 38, wants to play for a contender.  The Vikings were easier to run on this season and they limited Pat Williams’ playing time at the end of the season.

We’d say that Pat Williams could be at the end of his career, but we remember people saying that when he left Buffalo.  In 2004.

Pat is stud on and off the field. It hurts to lose him but too many holes to fill and things to fix. Need to give Guion his shot and he has looked OK. I could see him in New England.

Go get that ring Pat,,,,good luck

I thought Pat was supposed to retire after this year? Favre must be rubbing off on him. Anyway, its time for him to pay the star caps piper next season.

Wrong – he torpedoed the Packers, Jets and Vikings. Favre took the Vikings all the way to the NFC Championship – a place where Tavaris Jackson or any other Vikings QB on staff could never have done and you call that torpedoed? Love your biased answer though.

Those were the good days when an opponent went with a heavy run set for a 3 and 1 and they were tackled for a 5 yard loss. Now it’s run on any down and gain 5 to 75 yards.

  13. purpleguy says: Jan 5, 2011 12:35 PM

Fat Pat has been declining for the past 2 years, but could still be effective on a part-time basis. It’s about time the younger guys got their time in anyway, as they have gradually become more effective.

Of course, some dopey cheeser blames Pat’s departure on Lord Favre. Then again, they also blame the Dome’s collapse and the fact that the Miller Brewing company was sold to a foreign investor on the same guy.

Oh, and here’s a couple facts you might have missed:

    07 – championship game
08 – Kicked ass with a crappy coach until injury
    09 – championship game

What you describe as torpedoing might be described as a helluva good run by a 40 year old man to most intelligent people.

  16. packerrube13 says: Jan 5, 2011 12:44 PM

    @4sacroc

Not so much. Jets haven’t missed the playoffs since, and GB missed one year and then haven’t missed since. What exactly is your definition of running a franchise into the ground then? I took it as doormat… Maybe you need to get your verbatum in order… ?

And getting Mangini axed was a huge blessing. They got Rex. What am I missing here? Nothing. You are off base man.

Favre leaves the Pack, Rodgers takes over and they have the first year starting QB troubles, which is normal.
They haven’t missed the playoffs since.

Favre leaves the Jets, gets Mangini canned, and they get Rex and went to the AFC championship game the next year, and are in the playoffs again this year. The franchises are thriving… Not run into the ground.

Hey Nitwit: The courtship of Favre created the “Mess in Minnehaha.” They went all in with that one-time (1996) champion-turned pervert –and now the bill’s due. They threw millions at Favre when they could have extended many of the key UFA’s on the roster.

    @contra

Biased answer? See above. How did he drive the Pack and Jets into the ground? We went to the NFCCG the last year he was in Green and Gold, then we missed a year due to a first year starting QB, then have won 11 and 10 games respectively the next two years. And Jets? Just made the AFCCG after he left, and this year who knows what they will do. Hardly were in ruin post Favre…

You want to explain which key free agents they didn’t sign last year. That is the year the Vikings paid Favre, correct? It has nothing to do with the free agents of THIS COMING YEAR. The only one I can think of from last year is Chester Taylor and tell me how well he did this year.

You are way off base. As other posters told you the teams you are suggesting he derailed are playoff teams both last year and this year. He brought his team to the NFCCG last year and this year he was injury riddled as was the team.

Therefore before you start spewing garbage from your keyboard you may want to get some facts straight. One bad year doesn’t derail 3 football teams. It doesn’t even mean he derailed one. He was part of a terrible season. Maybe you ought to wait to see how they do next season. Then you may make a solid point.

Pat I will always remember you man, we had some excellent defenses, first team ever in modern day to lead NFL 3 straight seasons in run de. Hope you can find that ring your chasing, I certainly know how you feel.
Although it won’t be a full blown rebuild in Minny the tide has shifted, Guion deserves his chance and has played well, we won’t be able to afford Pat either with Greenway, Rice and other younger free agents needing to be kept.

  23. jimmy1smith says: Jan 5, 2011 1:38 PM

Pat Williams will not have many teams to choose from considering only the state of Minnesota allows players to take Star Caps and still play–and the state of Minnesota has only one professional football team, using that description rather loosely since they finished behind the Lions this year.

But he is a smart man to recognize that if he wants to win a Superbowl and only has a short time to do it, the Vikings aren’t the team. People can blame Pat Williams all they want for the poor run defense this year but I saw plenty of running plays directed at Jarhead Allen that went for big gains. And Pat Williams isn’t making $70 million to further illustrate the point.

So Williams will hit the road and the Vikings will suck even worse although it will be a challenge to recognize it after this last season.

  24. truefan2 says: Jan 5, 2011 1:47 PM

    Oh MY LORD people!
Can’t you folks who are so obsessed with Favre get some kind of GRIP? I can’t believe there are people who actually make their ID something related to him! Geez.

This was a post about Pat Williams, ans SOMEHOW, incomprehensibly it turns into a thread about Favre?

And “4sacrock” is really the one with the “Crock” of you know what…

Pat Williams wanting to go anywhere else has something to do with Brett Favre? Really? Maybe that makes sense in your little Hate-Favre-Centric world but not anybody elses.

The Vikes will have enough money to sign who they want to, and they will let go who they want.

So, let’s stop pretending that bringing in a Veteran QB and going one play from the Superbowl was some kind of “failure”.

I just can’t believe the idiocy on this board sometimes….

Are the Vikings any better off now that Failvre has come and (presumably) gone?

In the long run, hell no.

You can spin it positively (we made the NFCGC, Childo’s gone, etc.) but the damage done to that “organization” will reverberate over the next 5 years, at LEAST.

You guys sold out and embraced the enemy–you fractured your fanbase, alienating what I what call the few, true-blooded diehard Vikes fans–those who in no way would ever ever ever root for Favre (same as I or any dignified Bears fan never would accept him if he came to the Bears).

And now, in his wake, you basically broke your bank to retain him another year, did unspeakable damage to the reputation of your organization and fanbase, you now have an unproven coach–a huge blank unknown at QB, your once-top rated defensive unit is eroded and dissolved thanks to age and free agency, your young talent at all the skill positions:
Pothead Harvin, She-ankle, and Butter-fingers Peterson–have no one to get them the ball and lead their offense, your future home is uncertain and un-determined, once again the stank of sex scandals taints your locker room, and your 3 divisional counterparts EACH have young gunslinging QBs who are likely only going to get better with experience, who are still full of potential and who can lead a team.

You put a band-aid on your bullet wound, and even though you thought it was a cool band-aid at the time (even better that you’d ripped it off a rival), turned out it was old and filthy and wouldn’t stay on anymore…

and now you guys are left with an infected wound and bleeding out…last place in the division. Franchise in shambles. Future in doubt.

You’ll be lucky if you win a division title in the next 5 years….which is what we said way back when all your braggadocious chest-thumping began: Failvre would leave you in worse shape than he found you, and here you are.

    That’s what “all-in” meant.
    Don’t saw you weren’t warned.

Fractured our fan base by embracing the enemy? WTF do you think this is ? War? God, you sound like a little girl asswound. Players switch teams. That is how it is. Favre was the enemy as a Packer but not when he joined us. It is a business of winning clown boy and Favre had all you Pack and Bear tools holding your breath last season for we were a play away from the SB….Let me guess, you wouldn’t welcome AD in Chicago because he is the enemy? LOL BS!

    Well, not all is lost.

Yes, the tin foil roof on Gas Bag Stadium has collapsed, and a third of the team is headed to free agency … but not to worry, the Triangle of Authority as been preparing for this Williams Wall thing for sometime now.

All the StarCaps have been placed in separate silos so that each of the fellas can grab their share as they head out the door of the Last Place Vikings facility for the final time … in search of greener pastures.

And finding pastures that are won’t be hard, considering where they’re coming from.

  40. deweyaxewound says: Jan 5, 2011 4:40 PM

    @pervy,

And that’s precisely why your franchise/fanbase gets no respect–because it has no respect for itself.

We’ll w-hore ourselves out to whoever, we’ll embrace any player, accept any d-bag coach or moronic front office move, we’ll blow whichever way the wind blows our Loveboat sails, we’ll show up and be obnxious if we win a few games, but fade away when they aren’t…

No, it’s not JUST about winning–it’s also about history, tradition, dignity, competition, the integrity of the game, rivalry, and character.

There’s so much more involved than JUST business and winning–regardless of whatever the media tells you and you sheep-ishly believe and regurgitate.

If it was just about winning–why not be a “6-burgh” fan, or jump on the Patriots bandwagon?

Those are the teams that are “winning”, right?

    You don’t get it.
And I should know better than to try and explain something “loyalty” or “character” to a Vikings fan…

Oh, for the love of God, can some of you people just grow up? Not every story is about Favre. Besides, his career is over, just let it go. Your comment is especially off-base in this case. Favre didn’t fail to draft of QB of the future because he didn’t want to admit that he whiffed so badly on Tavaris Jackson. Favre didn’t neglect the secondary until it had degraded to the point it has. Favre didn’t stand by and let the roster get too old in some areas or fail to address the upcoming free agency issues a little bit at a time so that a potential mass exodus of talent could be prevented. The guy responsible for most of this was already fired. But hey, you certainly demonstrated how much of a Favre-obsessed douche you can be. Way to go champ.

No, Mangini got Mangini fired. Favre had the Jets at the top of the AFC East until he injured his throwing arm. At that point, you sit the guy, streak or not. If you’re a HC and you don’t sit a QB with a torn biceps muscle in his throwing arm, you deserve to be fired.

As for the Packers and Vikings. Favre won the Packers their only SB since the Lombardi era, took them to another SB, and took them to overtime in the NFC Championship game his last year with the team. How close to the SB have the Packers come since then? When it comes to the Vikings, you can blame Favre for one big problem. He did so well his first year with the team that Wylf gave Childress an extension he didn’t deserve.

  44. notoriusbug says: Jan 5, 2011 5:53 PM

You keep talking about the Vikings having no QB next year…the season just ended…how do you know who will be behind center for the Vikings next year?? There will be some QBs available this offseason…I’m thinking Kyle Orton, Donovan McNabb…not super stars but serviceable guys who could be very good in the right system…or the Vikings could draft a guy like Cam Newton or Ryan Mallet…over the last few years look at the young QBs who have stepped in and succeeded…Sam Bradford, Josh Freeman, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Big Ben…I realize guys like Brady Quinn and Matt Leinhart have faltered…but that’s the chance you take…I just find it humorous that you’re judging the Vikings QB when the QB spot has yet to be filled.

I’m not even a Favre fan and I can see how ridiculous your comments are. Favre didn’t cost you that game against the Giants pal, he almost won you a game you shouldn’t have been competitive in. The Packers had all of 35 rushing yards the entire game! That means that the burden was entirely on Favre to manufacture some offensive production against a phenomenal defense…the same one that ended the Patriots perfect season in the SB. When an offense is that one-sided against a defense that good, bad things are going to happen eventually. But, yeah, it’s all Favre’s fault.

As for fleecing the Jets and Vikings, since when is it fleecing a team to sign a contract they offer you? Is Rodgers fleecing the Packers too since they haven’t won the SB yet? Seriously, you sound like a whiny, spoiled little child.

Favre didn’t cost you that game against the Giants pal, he almost won you a game you shouldn’t have been competitive in. The Packers had all of 35 rushing yards the entire game!

The Packers run game wasn’t so bad back then. Favre called audibles whenever he felt like it, which is one of the reasons the Packers grew tired of his self-centered crap. Childress was tired of it too. Favre was the only person that could win a game (in his opinion.) Nothing has changed with that guy. Viking fans are defensive about him because he got them so close (last year,) before he tried too hard and blew it….just as 1,000,000 Packer fans predicted he would.
