i agree that there's not really a way to make it better. i think you answered your own question as to why it exists in the first place when you said "The League gets credit for having a “rule” for equal opportunity employment". this is much like EVERY other employer who has to put that little disclaimer at the end of every application that they will not discriminate on the basis of blah blah blah. the nfl just took it one step further, yet stopped short of mandating hiring of minorities.
"This rule is typical liberal non-sense"
-so i guess you're willing to accept that your opposition to it is elitist conservative nonsense. i thought you guys were the ones who were supposed to be above name calling?

hate to be the bearer of bad news, but racism is still alive and well. are we still stuck in the 60s? obviously not. are we getting much CLOSER to racial equality? ABSOLUTELY, but we arent there yet. and please save me the "obama got elected" line. like i said, we are infinitely closer to equality, but didnt you see some of the people who opposed his election depicting him as a monkey, black sambo, arab, terrorist, etc. i somehow doubt they chose those depictions for his ideas about healthcare

@meso0rnery and jpopejoy:
for the millionth time, IT REQUIRES AN INTERVIEW, that’s it, NOT a hire (a significant departure from an affirmative action program which would require a certain percentage of minorities in the workplace). why is this so offensive to you??? and more importantly, why is it so unreasonable?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I understand that it REQUIRES AN INTERVIEW. That was my point. I was saying that there is no way to modify the rule to make it better, short of forcing owners to HIRE minorities. The rule sucks, plain and simple. You are just getting defensive because Dan Rooney's name is attached to it. Like I said, owners don't hire coaches based on race. This rule is typical liberal non-sense. They make people think that they are being wronged because of race, and use it for their own agenda. Like Dan Rooney, using this as an attractive bullet on his resume, to get his gig in Ireland. I believe Obama appointed him. Oh, and I am a Steeler fan, so I'm not a "hater". I think that minorities should be offended by this rule. I'd see it as a slap in the face. This is not the 60's. Maybe the coaching candidates should hire agents to get them interviews.

If Harbaugh falls through then the 9ers should wait until after the playoffs so they can start interviewing coordinators from half decent teams. There's no rush once Harbaugh is off the table, and McDaniels is such a fundamentally dumb idea that you can almost hear the horrible screaming from every 49er fan.

It's become increasingly obvious, especially after this season with Belichick taking over both the offensive and defensive coordinator positions and having one of his arguably best seasons, Bilichick used his former coordinators as glorified clipboard holder. Think of all the coordinators that have come out of that organization that have looked completely clueless on the sidelines. McDaniels is no different. I hope this is an incorrect report, because hiring McDaniels makes no sense whatsoever. The only bright spot in his career at Denver was him leaving Denver.

Call me crazy but I really dont think McDaniels is that bad of a choice. He's not a bad coach, in Denver he didnt really have the talent, although that was his fault. I think if given another chance he can be a good NFL coach. Especially because he is a QB guy and the 49ers have a couple young QB's to work with as well as the potential to draft one this April. Also, Schotenheimer from the Jets may not be a bad option as well. He developed Drew Brees and Philip Rivers.

@finfan316:
i started reading and was about to jump all over that, but then you brought it home for me. i can certainly see your point though. however, minority coordinators and position coaches are the most diversely represented positions in both the NCAA and NFL. HC, not so much. definitely getting better in the NFL, but getting more ridiculous by the hire in the NCAA. i think where the rule is really necessary is in the NCAA, their hiring/interviewing practices are RIDICULOUSLY biased.
@artiesliver:
"It tells black men that they still need to rely on the white to get them work"
-there arent any black owners, so they kinda do, but i see your point. i'd say it's only insulting when you dont really have a shot at the job, and in those situations, they are free to decline the interview, but choose to go ahead anyway for whatever reason. I'm sure Tomlin, Caldwell, Dungy, Smith, etc. were not insulted (even though the rule was in place) because there was an actual chance they could get the job . but with the exception of Tomlin (i only leave him out because he was hired by the team of the man after whom the rule was named), who can say for sure if (all) those guys would have been interviewed if not for the rule? there's just no way to know for sure.

well at least the 9ers wont encounter much competition to sign McDaniels!

Harbaugh:
7 million for what? dude, it's not like you've strung together Nat'l championships at Stanford. you didnt exactly resurrect SMU from the death penalty, so why the ridiculous asking price? unless that's your polite way of declining the job without appearing to be an arrogant SOB who feels like he's entitled to cherry pick his FIRST NFL HC JOB

Josh McDaniels? Well, I guess it’s a good thing that Patrick Willis is young so their defense won’t be able to get that terrible….

It baffles me that so many people go out of their blame all of the Broncos troubles on McD.

Do you guys realize that Belicheck wasn't much better and had a lot of the same problems on his first job in Cleveland? He seems to be considered a decent coach now doesn't he.

How about Mike Shanahan in his first job with the Raiders, that went really well yet he seemed to redeem himself in Denver on his second job.

Some coaches don't succeed on their first job, for any number of reasons. Mike Lombardy who worked with Belicheck in Cleveland compared that situation with McD in Denver and said they were very similar.

I guess most of you calling McD a complete failure and bashing the 9ers for considering him would have done the same when the Patriots hired Belicheck. There is no way you would admit it now since it would make you look quite foolish.

That “rule” doesn’t need work, that “rule” is a joke. What adjustments should be made? You can’t force a team to hire a minority as a head coach. Most GMs know who they want to go after, before they even fire their current coach. What the Rooney rule does, is it totally humiliates the token black guy that has to sit through an interview, just to satisfy the liberal NFL. The League gets credit for having a “rule” for equal opportunity employment, but really, what they are doing is making a race issue out of something that was never that… This isn’t 1960. The GMs don’t hire people based on race,… they hire the guy who they think gives them the best chance to win a title.
-------------------------

totally agree. could you imagine if NFL teams were forced to try out white half-backs and white nose tackles?!?!? so hypocritical that they apply this to only HC jobs, lol

Where’s Hue Jackson’s name? I guess his interview was just to satisy the Rooney Rule. Well at least they saved some money by not having to fly someone in to SF. That rule needs some work.
