I don’t see why there’s so much angst about Harbaugh. He’s not some college coach who went from a college to the NFL without having an idea of what NFL players and game plans and strategies are like (and frankly, how many rookie coaches WITH NFL experience as coordinators flame out?). He’s been there and done that and he knows what NFL players respond to and he know how to put together a game plan and frankly, he’s shown that he knows how to put together a staff and THAT is THE most important quality of a head coach because if he has to lord over his staff because they can’t do their job then he’s putting in less energy in overseeing the team and more into compensating for a weak member.

The Niner’s aren’t in a full re-building mode. Far from it. They’ve got three young first round picks on the o-line, Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis. Add a QB and it will be instant offense . . . well maybe not instant. The defensive front seven is solid. The clearest need for a roster overhaul across the board is in the defensive backfield . . . if they can accomplish that they’ll be in business.

At least the Harbaugh drama is over now, and we’ll get to see him have to interact with Pete Carroll twice a year when they can ask each other “what’s your deal”. Harbaugh has as good a chance as any college coach to succeed, but by no means is a niner turnaround guaranteed, especially with no proven QB. Also, I don’t think that the overall niner roster is as talented as people think, and the players are getting a lot of cover because fans are blaming everything on Singletary.

It wasn’t so much a logical assessment as an impression. Didn’t follow Jim’s courtships too closely but PFT’s articles implied he was trying to find an alternative to the 49ers. Seeing now that he took a lower salary to coach in SanFran does make the 49ers seem to be his genuine preference. Always liked Harbaugh as a player, and his brother has done well with the Ravens. Agree with you that they have the talent to turn the corner if he lives up to expectations.

Good response to 44boz. What is it with people who think you can only comment on your own team?

Harbaugh will be back coaching college within 5 years. Not that he is a bad coach, he is taking over a team in shambles. Look up mediocre in the dictionary and you will see a niners logo from 1998 through 2010. This team is going to require at least 6 – 8 years of rebuilding to get back to top-level football and the Niners will not give Harbaugh that much time.

Harbaugh is a good coach taking over a bad situation that will lead to disaster…

This site isn’t just fanboys commenting on articles about “their” team. Although I admit there a lot of other water heads like you on here.

Everything I say in my post is factual. The niners were picked to win the division by everyone.

By the way, your team sucks. If they played in a different division, or maybe even the SEC, they would be 4-12 at best, maybe 3-13.

They lost 9 games by an average of 3 touchdowns.

And since I live in New York, when you say I should come up North to watch football in January, I guess you mean New England.

I have four favorite teams in the NFL.

The 49ers and the three teams playing against the Cowboys, Green Bay and Seahawks in any given week.

If any of these three happen to be playing each other, I hope for a tie.

Of course these change from season to season with the exception of my life long hatred of the Cowboys. I don’t care if they’re 0 for the season, I still want them to lose.

Until recent years, the Squawks weren’t even worth the effort, but now they rise my ire. I can’t stand Pete Carroll. Even typing that name makes me feel a bit ill.

6-10 next season with Alex Smith; 7-9 with anyone else. Which probably will be enough to make the playoffs in the crappiest division in NFL.

Everyone forgets the niners were competitive in games vs the Falcons, Saints, Philly and should have won ALL of them. With Harbaugh we would have won 2 at least! Not to get overly excited, I say we wait a year on a QB. Mallet isn’t good, the Mizzou guy isn’t great, Cam Newton (I rather have Cam Cameron at QB). Just get Orton or even someone who can just manage a game. The run game will annihilate teams

I think you can break down all the comments into a few categories:

1. Niners fans who think Jim will be Bill Walsh
2. Niners fans who think he will be another Nolan
3. Raiders fans who think (and hope and pray) that he will be worse than Nolan.
4. Miami fans who are disappointed.
5. And one random Pats fan who, given the intelligent nature of her comment, just learned to read.

I have no clue how good Jim will be. I didn’t want him (as a 49er fan) but if Josh McDaniels was our second option, I’m sure glad to give him a shot.

The drama would probably been foregone had York kept to his word in the first place with money being no object. Had he not tried to be a cheapskate and lowball him, this deal would have been done wednesday night. Just sayin. Credit to Jed for pulling it off in the long run though

I agree Hue. You can bet this guy is a Niners fan who doesn’t have the balls to stick with a team when they’re down, so he claims he likes another team as well, who just happens t be a good team.

You can bet if the Ravens start to stink, he’ll jump ship as fast as he can and claim he’s a fan of another team. I don’t buy into that “you can have as many favorite teams as you want B.S.” Grow a sack and pick one team and stick with them.

Now who doesn’t think Bill Parcells is THE mover and shaker in the NFL:

1. He goes to Miami and directs the rebuilding of a 1-15 team into a contender in one season.
2. Team is sold to Stepeh Ross, and Parcells basically says ‘ No, thank you’ to working for Ross.
3. Parcells accepts gig to work as a consultant with York and his 49ers.
4. Ross makes a fool of himself and the Dolphins – without Parcells – by trying to hire Harbaugh while Sparano is still the coach.
5. Harbaugh turns down Miami and signs with 49ers instead for 2M less/yr than Miami was offering.
6. Finally 49ers look astute. Miami is in disarry. Guess which side Parcells is working with.

THats a direct quote from Matt Maiocco on twitter account. It lets you know he can spot NFL QB level talent.
Romo and Garrard were not billed as top level QB’s coming into the NFL but yet both have had solid careers. If he can pick and groom a QB like he has done with every place he has been than that could put us over the top. It may not even be a 1st or 2nd round pick could be a steal in the 3rd he sees and all of a sudden were gold. Who knows this guy knows QB’s though and that has been our biggest issue for years. Fix the secondary a little with a top CB in first and all of a sudden we are talking above .500 in first season.
Here’s the one thing a lot of people aren’t talking about. Hes a WCO guy and we have all that film from the yrs of Walsh running it at his disposal now too. Could be very exciting.
Does he keep the 3-4 def or switch it up to 4-3 though?
