Actually Bill Parcells was coach in ’97 when Manning thinking of coming out. The Jets may have made a bad choice in Kotite but the overall management was neither cheap nor especially incompetent – they corrected the Kotite mistake rather quickly.

if its still big bucks like the mannings implied to him, a good QB will get bucks… then i guess it doesn’t really matter…

I sure would get an insurance policy in case of the odds of getting hurt… teams probably will pass if that is the case… shoulder injury, hip etc

Good decision, Manning wisely passed on the Jets and Luck wisely passed on the Panthers. Going to a terrible franchise like those can ruin your career.

…ignorant comments like this make me realize how appreciative I am for getting a decent education. What made that a wise decision?

He would have helped turn that franchise around and the Jets would probably have helped him to more than the 1 career SB ring he has in Indy, probably within his first two years. They had just hired Bill Parcells, Belichick probably would have made good on his word to stay with the Jets with Peyton at the helm and if you think Peyton’s legend is strong now, it pales in comparison to what he would have been if he went to NY and made the Jets more of a household name than the Giants.

He would have had Keyshawn Johnson, Wayne Chrebet and probably would have helped Kyle Brady from becoming a bust and he would have had Curtis Martin by year two.

Of course its all woulda, coulda, shoulda, but this probably would have been the best decision for Manning…

And your “precious peyton” comment is absurd. Did Peyton write this article or ask to be mentioned?? I highly doubt it. Its a non story but since every move he makes needs to be documented on this website it becomes a story.

Here’s a news flash for all you guys who are praising Manning: NEVER happened. Manning didn’t pass on the Jets; he tried to get Parcells to guarantee that the Jets would pick him if he went pro and when Parcells refused to do so, he stayed in school. NOT as altruistic as you guys make him out to be. Parcells got rid of the pick because they had been pillaged by the Patriots for signing him and he needed to get some picks back.

Now the perfect scenario would be if his stock falls and Carolina has a middle of the road season (6 – 10 to 8 – 8) and are able to draft him next year for way less money.

Carolina is not a terrible franchise. They had a bad year of course, but they are a perenially good team in a tough division. You put Aaron Rodgers the Panthers and they go 11-5. You put Jimmy Clausen starting for the packers, with the horendous running game they had this year, they go 1-15.

Luck wants to get his degree, it has nothing to do with not wanting to play for the Panthers…nor did it have anything to do with Peyton not wanting to play for the Jets. I mean, Archie and Eli flipped the tables during draft day to make sure Eli PLAYED IN NEW YORK for crying out loud.

However, I do think that Luck may have screwed himself out of a lot of money even if he has an even better year next year and remains the #1 pick in 2012. Due to the collective bargaining agreement, there is more than likely to be a rookie salary cap in place meaning no more obscene contracts for players that have yet to step on the field and prove themselves.

Also, Luck is getting all of these comparisons to the best since Manning, but what if they’re wrong (even though I highly doubt it). Analysts predictions and assumptions don’t mean squat until the player actually proves himself ON THE FIELD. Brady fell the pick 199 IN THE 6TH ROUND and he turned out pretty good…
