If it was the mid 90′s and I was advising someone about joining the Jets I’d just say two words:

Rich Kotite

Actually Bill Parcells was coach in '97 when Manning thinking of coming out. The Jets may have made a bad choice in Kotite but the overall management was neither cheap nor especially incompetent - they corrected the Kotite mistake rather quickly.

How can people say oh hes a good kid its only 1-2 million. Its retarded to stay when you know your the number 1 pick. Ask Locker if he wishes he came out last year and im sure he would say yes. He went from 1 to probably 4th or 5th QB in this draft thats more than a couple million he lost. Luck is turning down money. What happens if he gets hurt and isnt even a first round pick next year? He better hope that degree can make up for the millions he pissed away.

i would not want to go to the Panthers...

so he waits a year to see which 'loser' team he does go to?

is there a 'supplemental' draft anymore like Bernie Kosar chose to do?

If he obviously so wants a college degree, it could have waited.... but where are the 'experts' on EXACTLY what the 'rookie' wage would be in 2011.. WHAT is being tossed around in the CBA talks?

if its still big bucks like the mannings implied to him, a good QB will get bucks... then i guess it doesn't really matter...
I think what matters is how the 'draft' plays out for certain players...

Didn't one of the mannings refuse to go to a certain team? wasn't San Diego involved at one time in a QB trade?

I sure would get an insurance policy in case of the odds of getting hurt... teams probably will pass if that is the case... shoulder injury, hip etc

Maybe I'm nieve, but what's wrong with only getting $5 million by waiting verses $50 million by leaving. Geeze, how much money does a person really NEED?!? Beside, he'll make endorsement money, etc so he can make up some of that. You can't relive your college experience. Going back later or doing night classes are NOT the same.

"If I were advising someone about what team to go to or steer clear off, I would say avoid cheap teams (Cin., TB, Buff., etc.) and mismanaged ones (Wash., Oak, etc.) and of course, ones that fall in both categories and then maybe ones with bad weather. I don’t think the NYJ of the mid 90′s fall in any of these groups."

Don't think it would have mattered who Peyton went to, Colts sucked just as bad as the Jets did at the time. Manning is just that good. If he played for the Browns, they would be contenders

aaronrodgerschokes says: Jan 7, 2011 1:00 PM

Good decision, Manning wisely passed on the Jets and Luck wisely passed on the Panthers. Going to a terrible franchise like those can ruin your career.

...ignorant comments like this make me realize how appreciative I am for getting a decent education. What made that a wise decision?

He would have helped turn that franchise around and the Jets would probably have helped him to more than the 1 career SB ring he has in Indy, probably within his first two years. They had just hired Bill Parcells, Belichick probably would have made good on his word to stay with the Jets with Peyton at the helm and if you think Peyton's legend is strong now, it pales in comparison to what he would have been if he went to NY and made the Jets more of a household name than the Giants.

He would have had Keyshawn Johnson, Wayne Chrebet and probably would have helped Kyle Brady from becoming a bust and he would have had Curtis Martin by year two.

Of course its all woulda, coulda, shoulda, but this probably would have been the best decision for Manning...

Hes not Mike Vick, is that better??

And your "precious peyton" comment is absurd. Did Peyton write this article or ask to be mentioned?? I highly doubt it. Its a non story but since every move he makes needs to be documented on this website it becomes a story.

Your goin down next week to Baltimore, I hope you know that!! We'll see if you ever post on here again...

If he truly wants to finish his degree, and play in the NFL, this year would probably be a good year to get drafted. If there's a lockout, he can go and finish his degree, if not he plays for millions, and finishes in the off season. The ulimate goal of getting any degree from any university is to use it to get the best job you can. Well, he got that, so why is he really staying?

If I were advising someone about what team to go to or steer clear off, I would say avoid cheap teams (Cin., TB, Buff., etc.) and mismanaged ones (Wash., Oak, etc.) and of course, ones that fall in both categories and then maybe ones with bad weather. I don't think the NYJ of the mid 90's fall in any of these groups.

Good decision, Manning wisely passed on the Jets

Here's a news flash for all you guys who are praising Manning: NEVER happened. Manning didn't pass on the Jets; he tried to get Parcells to guarantee that the Jets would pick him if he went pro and when Parcells refused to do so, he stayed in school. NOT as altruistic as you guys make him out to be. Parcells got rid of the pick because they had been pillaged by the Patriots for signing him and he needed to get some picks back.

I am a Panthers Fan and I am torn. On one hand I would have loved for him to be a Panther, on the other it's smart to go ahead and guarantee that you'll be playing meaningful football next year. I firmly believe that his decision is based on the lockout. I'm not buying the degree PR release. I dont know who said it but one comment was "After making 50 mil, is he seriously going to go design buildings for 25K?" This 'going to finish my degree' comment is nothing but a PR response. Of course he's not going to say "I'm not going to the NFL until they get their sh*t straightened out."

Now the perfect scenario would be if his stock falls and Carolina has a middle of the road season (6 - 10 to 8 - 8) and are able to draft him next year for way less money.

Carolina is not a terrible franchise. They had a bad year of course, but they are a perenially good team in a tough division. You put Aaron Rodgers the Panthers and they go 11-5. You put Jimmy Clausen starting for the packers, with the horendous running game they had this year, they go 1-15.

Good thing we have Flynn instead of Clausen. We still go 8-8 or better.

The kid's not hard-up for money, wants to complete his goal of graduating from a prestigious university, has a chance to something unprecdented in his school's football history, and, oh yeah, doesn't feel like making football his job, yet. What's so wrong with that? It's not like he's coming back for a 5th year, he'll be a redshirt junior. The money's still going to be there, and unless he has right arm cut off in a freak accident, he'll be #1 pick in 2012 (who knows, maybe he'll end up whereever Harbaugh ends up in 2012).

And another thing, as much as I wanted Luck to declare for the Panthers sake, you can't hate on a guy for bettering himself. We constantly tell kids to embrace the term "student-athlete" while in college, but then chastise them when they decide to actually embrace it. We, as a sports loving society, are entirely to hypocritical regarding other peoples decisions regarding THEIR livelihood.

Luck wants to get his degree, it has nothing to do with not wanting to play for the Panthers...nor did it have anything to do with Peyton not wanting to play for the Jets. I mean, Archie and Eli flipped the tables during draft day to make sure Eli PLAYED IN NEW YORK for crying out loud.

However, I do think that Luck may have screwed himself out of a lot of money even if he has an even better year next year and remains the #1 pick in 2012. Due to the collective bargaining agreement, there is more than likely to be a rookie salary cap in place meaning no more obscene contracts for players that have yet to step on the field and prove themselves.

Also, Luck is getting all of these comparisons to the best since Manning, but what if they're wrong (even though I highly doubt it). Analysts predictions and assumptions don't mean squat until the player actually proves himself ON THE FIELD. Brady fell the pick 199 IN THE 6TH ROUND and he turned out pretty good...
