Vick faces big obstacles against Packers

Michael Vick, Greg Steed

Michael Vick has come so far, so fast this season.  We expect to be dazzled every week.  When Vick doesn’t come through — like against Minnesota — we feel like we’ve been cheated.

After one of the most memorable regular seasons any player has authored in a long time, Vick enters the playoffs with renewed questions about his development.

For Friday’s NBCSports.com column, I wrote about the obstacles that Vick faces on Sunday against the Packers.   Vick has to improve his blitz recognition, his offensive line needs to play better, and the Packers defense poses a serious matchup problem.

Conventional wisdom says the Packers have a great chance to advance.  But Vick’s game isn’t about conventional wisdom, and that’s why this is one of the best Wild Card matchups we’ve seen in a long, long time.

I see this as a close one for the 1st quarter and the Packers walking away with it at the end, in a very close game.

The difference will be Vick’s inability to read the Packers coverage schemes….IMO.

This is the dilema with Vick, “dazzled” being the key word.

People get seduced by the “dazzle” and start saying outlandish things like he’s going to win the MVP or the Super Bowl or he’s the best QB or player in the league….please!

Running QB’s do not win Super Bowls, nor do QB’s who can’t figure out corner blitzes by the time they are 30.

Lets just be realistic and admit that Vick is a lot of fun to watch and nothing more.

Vick is like Pedro Cerrano from Major League, except Vick’s “curveball” is going to be a Dom Caper’s designed Psycho Blitz Package. Enjoy your quick exit from the playoffs, dogkiller.

Really you guys are silly. 20 teams didn’t make the playoffs. If you take teams to the playoffs your are in the minority. Vick has taken teams to the NFC Championship. Most quarterbacks will never win a Superbowl. Favre won once. Peyton has won once. Tom Brady is one of the greatest of all time. The only reason Vick wont (and shouldn’t) win MVP is because Brady is having another season for the ages. Most teams would be fortunate to get a QB like Vick. The Falcons got lucky that Matt Ryan came along. Most QB’s drafted will never win. Carson Palmer anyone. Please. Vick isn’t close to Brady but he has emerged as one of the best in the NFL. Blitz recognition and offensive line issues are a problem for all QB’s except Brady.

just another post from Rosenthal looking for quick hits..
    Obstacles.
    that would mean multiple.
what you listed is 1. Read the blitzes.
the other things you mention are The Offensive line. Um, how does Vick fix that?
And the other you list is the Packers Defense. Um again, how does Vick fix that?
Must be a really slow day for you PFT, cause you’re trying to make a story when there isn’t one.

Packers at Eagles is going to be a good game. As they all will be, except maybe New Orleans at Seattle..

Get off Vick’s johnson already PFT. All season you guys have been trying to cut him down. Even when he’s done something spectacular, you find issues with what he’s done. Don’t forget, Vick was #2 starting the season, and the Eagles were hoping at BEST to be an 8-8 team with Kolb’s first season.

I feel the exact same way. I was offered tickets to the game. 2 reasons I’m not going. I have people coming over to watch. 2 Im not very confident the Eagles can win. ok 3 reasons, it’s going to be very cold and windy.

Sorry about that last comment, timeforcomplaints. Somebody hacked into my account. What I would have said was use an apostrophe more than 50% of the time when it’s called for. Also, I thought the dumbest thing someone could do was say “your” when they mean “you’re,” but now I know that the dumbest thing someone can do is say “your are.”

The Packers can play like champions one week (Giants game) and struggle against mediocrity (Lions games) the next.

If Rodgers is able to unleash that offense the Eagles are in serious trouble. Capers is a blitz-machine and he’ll be sending the house a lot. It’ll be interesting to see what Capers devises to try and shut down Vick’s quick feet.

Neither team is dominant and both are hungry for a win so this game promises to be monumental.

Definitely the Psycho Blitz package and a beast known as Clay Matthews. Vick may be taking a quick exit from consciousness if Matthews lays a hit on him like the one he laid on Kolb back in Week One. Of course, Vick claims reading blitzes is “easy” so he should have nothing to worry about… lol.

Rodgers plays very small and tentative in big games. Even last week against the Bears, he manufactured only the one TD drive. Had Cutler and the Bears offense showed up and scored just a few points, they’d have been toast.

With Rodgers you have a team that will be threatening for the playoffs most seasons but you aren’t going to see a lot of playoff wins unless he can conquer his nerves a little.

Packers offense will likely score 17 or less. It remains to be seen who will win the game though. I think it will come down to Capers vs. Reed and that chessmatch.

    20-13 Eagles is my prediction.

  35. richmondhokie says: Jan 7, 2011 3:45 PM

Packers are a so-so road team, and Philly plays well at home. Rodgers doesn’t have a good record in close games; his W-L record is something like 11-20 in games decided by a touchdown or less, and his QB rating is 73 in games decided by 14 points or less. In other words, if he isn’t blowing a team out of the park, he doesn’t play well.

If Philly can keep the score close and pressure Rodgers on defense, they’ll win this game.
