Jets receiver Braylon Edwards acknowledges that it was humiliating to lose to the Patriots by six touchdowns last month. But he says that doesn’t mean a thing heading into their playoff rematch on Sunday.
“We knew we would get back at them,” Edwards said. “We always knew. In the back of our minds, we always felt as though we would get back to them and it would be about us. It’s not even about revenge. That’s the regular season. Who cares, to be honest. Yeah, we got embarrassed. But that’s the regular season. This is the playoffs. We’re fighting for something so much different.”
Edwards also echoed the comments of Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who said he doesn’t think the regular season meetings between the teams matter much to the postseason.
“If we beat them by one point, it’s a win,” Edwards said. “They can have the 42-point win. . . . But we just want a one-point win.”
As I wrote in today’s Wall Street Journal, however, when two teams meet in the playoffs after a blowout in the regular season, the result is usually another blowout. So history favors the Patriots.
But Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson says he and his teammates have been getting ready to beat the Patriots since that Monday night in New England.
“The funny thing is, I remember late in the fourth quarter as the Patriots were talking and yapping about the game that night and I said to a couple of guys, ‘We’ll be back,’” Tomlinson said. “You guys got us tonight, but we’ll be back.”
