Gregg Williams withdraws name from Broncos job

Sean Payton, Gregg Williams

Here’s a surprise: Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has declined to interview with the Denver Broncos for their head coaching position.

Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune and Jay Glazer of FOX both report Williams has decided to pass on the opportunity.  It’s a surprise because its believed Williams has long wanted to get another chance to be a head coach.

He becomes the second coach to turn down an interview with the Broncos.  Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey also turned down the interview, citing the need to prep for the playoffs.  (Mularkey did interview with the Browns and could theoretically still meet with the Broncos later, although Denver hopes to name a head coach by the middle of next week.)

“Williams made the decision today after discussing the situation with family and his players,” Duncan writes.

Expect John Elway to send out an update on the situation soon.

These candidates can all see that the situation with Elway in charge has disaster written all over it. That is unless Elway hires Terrel Davis in the front office to get him another SB ring.

This job is becoming as attractive as the raiders job.

In both cases, no one wants to work for an incompetant.

    T- squared would be a great player/coach/GM

  6. JMil_ATL says: Jan 11, 2011 12:31 PM

As a Falcons fan I was hoping he would get a HC job outside the division. Come on Gregg…you deserve the opportunity!

  7. kingjoe1 says: Jan 11, 2011 12:32 PM

Well if you heard Elway talk, he put it out there that he will control all aspects of football operations. No experienced coach wants the GM/President to question every personnel and on the field call they make. Players will start circumventing the system and go directly to Elway. The coach will be powerless by Thanksgiving.

these guys are making a huge mistake. Elway is fresh and will actually take your advice as his head coach, AND the owner has deep pockets. Your rebuilding would only take about a year or so. The head coach in that organization is going to have a lot more power than people think.

  11. geniusesq says: Jan 11, 2011 12:41 PM

Elway, how about you take Shanahan back? Two for free.

All the FAILCANT fans wanted him to take the job because he shutbdown fat boy turner and doody thug push off white this year…FAILCANTS luck is up this weekend…pathetic franchise…america could care less about the ghetto dwellers and hicks in ga….

Thank God! We already had a defensive set of coaches that can give up 41 pts to pedestrian offenses.

  18. jpmelon says: Jan 11, 2011 1:09 PM

    @ holyinconsistent

I think you are being too optimistic. The Broncos remind me of the Buffalo Bills. The hiring of Elway was an obvious PR stunt. His lack of experience will cost the Broncos in the long run. It’s the same type of stunt that the Bills pulled a few years ago when they hired Marv Levi (except Levi had some management skills). It didn’t work out very well for the Bills and Levi was gone after two years. Rebuilding takes time and you also need to get lucky. Tebow may very well have set you guys back another 4 years if he doesn’t work out (see: JP Losman).

If Elway acts like he is running the show (despite his lack of experience) he’ll scare away even more former Buffalo Bills head coaches. Next we’ll hear that they want to interview Wade Phillips, Perry Fewell and Dick Jauron.

  19. jimmysee says: Jan 11, 2011 1:10 PM

Tell Elway that Col. Klink is available.

  20. JMil_ATL says: Jan 11, 2011 1:22 PM

Sounds like some Saints fans are still a bit bitter! My comment was actually a compliment.

Remember…people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Look at your roster and the rap sheets that go along with that first.

Also…rajuncajun28…pretty clever calling the Falcons the Failcants since your team is nicknamed the AINTS.

You morons talking about Elway like he won’t make a difference…comparing him to Fat Millen. Millen was a mediocre player at best and not that bright. Elway is a hall of famer, smart and knows football. Smart/great players that leave professional sports usually do well in management in their respective sports. Take Steve Yzerman for example, was a great player and leader, in the hall of fame, went to Detroit’s front office and won a Cup as Vice President of player personnel, this season was picked by Tampa Bay to be General Manager, brought that team from seller dwellers to league contenders……Don’t count Elway out.
As for a coach….take Dennison or Fox…or both, Dennison as head coach and Fox as D coach.

O SNAP!. not only can can Williams not stop the Falcons, he turns down the only chance he will get to be a HC again. How did Lynch do against his TOUGH defense? O that’s right, he showed Porter who was who’s bitch.

Saints fans will always have the Super Bowl last year to reflect on. Get ready for mediocraty, and being a Ain’ts franchise again for the next twenty years. Bank on it.

O, and the stallworth D needs to get rid of Roman Harper NOW. That secondary, well, the whole defense, looked PATHETIC on Saturday. I wouldn’t want man boobs Williams to coach my team. Is he really a transvestite?

You know that Elway has been chilling in his stable eating carrots for 11 years right?

Also, watching decision makers in Arena football doesn’t qualify you for making decisions in the NFL.

After Elway finally selects a coach I hope the coach will then say publically, NO WAY I COACH FOR a MEDDLING HORSE TOOTH Car owner. He then picks some loser, the bronco’s continue to suck and then senile bowlen decides to move the team to LA in the middle of the night!

  32. really2011 says: Jan 11, 2011 3:07 PM

This really isn’t a Saints Falcons debate but hey why not…

First of all rajuncajun it was a compliment to our team and coaching staff. Thans J_Mil. To believe that Gregg Williams is not a good Def Coordinator is a bit ridiculous, he took some average front 7 talent and made them a turnover machine last year and #4 this year.

C’mon this other foolishness is a bit ridiculous – we got beat and on Saturday Seattle was the better team. I could harp on key injuries, several injuries, etc but it doesn’t matter we lost.

In terms of the ignorance formally named djrando7, you do realize that the Saints are 8-2 against the Falcons since Payton arrived. Add in 3 Post Season Appearances, 2 NFC Championship Appearances, and a World Championship in Payton’s first 5 years – not sure where you see mediocrity – outside of your home stadium.

In all sincerity, let me not let an ignorant fan make me downgrade the Falcons, they are a good team and got a good break this weekend as I think the Eagles, Saints (if healthy), and Packers have the personnel to challenge them in the Ga. Dome. 2 of those teams are knocked out so the road to the SB just fell more in your favor – capitalize on it.

In terms of mediocrity, I can take that statement from Pitt, NE, GB, etc. you know teams with a winning culture but Falcons. You know your franchise is the South East version of ours (minus the ring). This is your shot, make the most of it as you have a beast coming to town this week.

    Listen up, moron.

Millen bombed out as a GM, but was one hell of a player and one of the smartest on the field when he played.

  36. ilovefoolsball says: Jan 11, 2011 4:04 PM

@really2011, thank you for the mature, classy comment. It’s refreshing to see intelligence among so much irrational, emotional, stupidity.

This isn’t about the Falcons/Saints. Gregg Williams’ defense let the team down in the playoffs, but last year the defense helped win a championship, so I can’t fault the guy too much. You can’t be the best every year, you can only hope to compete. While the Seahawks may have made some great plays against the Saints, they were still only 5 points down.
It was a good game that the Hawks deserved to win and that’s fine. I’m honestly not that disappointed in the Saints, they won a superbowl last year, and this year they had a winning season. Sure they lost the first playoff game but I’d take that over the Seahawks current list of accomplishments any day.

  37. tombstone7 says: Jan 11, 2011 4:41 PM

Probably a good move on Williams part….after that debacle of a defensive game plan against a 7-9 NFC loser who actually won the division decreased his stock…..

  38. turbodog1027 says: Jan 11, 2011 9:17 PM

I will have the biggest smile on my face as i watch the Falcons get beat by the packers this weekend. Back to reality Falcon fans. Your team will never get a ring and we have the Lombardi here in New Orleans. Sucks huh?

  39. grrr05 says: Jan 12, 2011 12:05 AM

Greg Williams has a pretty “cush” job in New Orleans. The Saints’ offense is consistently at the top of the league statistally, and having a good offense takes a good bit of pressure off the defense. As long as the offense continues to perform at such a high level, his defenses only have to be average for the Saints to be able to compete for a championship. Plus the Saints hired his son as an assistant coach, so that’s a plus as well. His job is pretty well secure in New Orleans, and I’m sure he knows that. He probably knows that he could fall flat on his face trying to re-build the Bronocs and be out within a couple of years, so why not just wait for right opportunity? In the meantime, he’ll be secure and have fun coaching the Saints’ defense.

  40. veetan says: Jan 12, 2011 12:17 PM

Call Gregg Williams’ defenses smoke and mirrors, overated, overachievers, posers, whatever. The bottom line is that his defenses rank in the top ten of the league. Always.

He’s a good D-Coordinator, he’s in like Flynn down in N.O., he’s one of the highest paid assistant coaches in the NFL, and his defenses back up Drew Brees. Why would he leave – especially for a team like Denver? As they say on Monday night,”C’mon man,”.
