blackheld says:
Jan 11, 2011 6:20 PM
Detroit would take a #3 pick for Drew Stanton, who beat Green Bay and Tampa Bay both, this year. He can also move well without the ball, which will help in SF.

Of course, Detroit already HAS the QB that should have been on the SF roster to start in 2011…Shaun Hill.

-------------------------------------------------

You mean the same Shaun Hill who statistically had a slightly worse year then Alex Smith? If anything their years were a wash. Hill's rating was 81.3 and Smith's was 82.1. Hill threw two more tds, but he also threw two more interceptions then Smith. Hill was one percent more accurate, but Smith was a little bit higher in yards per completion. The funny thing is, even though Hill's year was seen as being a great success for the Lions, Smith's season is seen as being an abject failure, despite the fact that their numbers are almost identical (including strangely games missed this season).

Which tells you a little where the bar is set for 49ers QBs. Sam Bradford is being hailed for his amazing year despite having a QB rating this season of 76.5 (again, compared to Alex Smith's 82.1). Sam Bradford of course played more games then Alex Smith since Smith was benched for five games, but taking the averages, Smith had a better average completion rating then Bradford and a better ratio of TDs to INTs. In other news Mark Sanchez is going with his team to the second round of the playoffs with only a 75.3 rating with numbers less impressive then Alex Smith's. Hasselback is being heralded after one good game against New Orleans even though his season rating is only 73.2 with a very bad 12 tds for 17 int.

Which is bad news if the 49ers are pinning hopes on the likes of Kevin Kolb (who only had a rating of 73.1 with 7 tds and 7 ints) because unless he dramatically improves he will be seen as a bust. And there is nobody this draft year that is close to being NFL ready. Maybe they will be if given a few years to develop and an Offensive line that can protect them, but the 49ers have neither of those.

As a 49ers fan I'm not optimistic about about any improvements at the QB position (indeed, with most of the suggestions like Kolb, McNabb, or anyone in the draft, we would be better off just keeping Alex Smith for another year which is of course impossible because 49er fans are ready to run him out on a rail). The 49ers may be better off not putting a lot of resources this year into a new QB and instead shore up the Offensive Line to help the running game and focusing on the secondary to see if the 49ers can pull together a dominant defensive unit. The 49ers had the sixth ranked run defense but the 24th ranked pass defense. If they could plug the holes in the secondary they may become very hard to beat. I know everyone in San Fransisco is hoping for some sort of redemption from the QB spot, but I doubt that's going to happen with what's currently available.

@bobhk
very insightful, you would understand this because you saw what stability and good coaching did for Steve Young. Way to many fans expect instant gratification and if they don't get it they want the player cut or coach/g.m. fired. I laugh when I hear the critics because they don't recognize talent, just like to complain. An example would be all the Packer fans who wanted Favre benched for Brunell early in their career. Patience is a virtue many nfl teams or their fans do not have.

Love how some people are so determined to criticise that they'll go for Baalke for giving a straight answer.

Only real problem is the likelihood of free agency and any trades not happening til after the draft - so I see 2 QBs through the draft. 1 highish pick, and 1 low rounder or undrafted. No idea who but its one position I trust Harbaugh to identify prospects for.

Then there will be Carr and someone from free agency/trade when CBA is sorted. If no CBA sorted far enough before season then Troy probably gets the chance as the 4th option for the 3 spaces.

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to #8 Kyle Orton.

__________________________

I’m guessing #18 Kyle Orton. I vaguely remember a #8 winning the Super Bowl for the 49ers and going to the HOF

Well, he is #8 for us right now. I liked him better as #18, but we have that number retired as well.
I really do think he would be good for the 9er's. They need a smart, accurate QB like Orton. The only fault that we (Denver) has found with him is his immobility. He got blammed for having two bad games this year, but he had cracked ribs. I like Orton as a QB a lot. I just think everyone is sprung on TT.

The ninners wished they can trade for Aaron Rodgers, the local kid they passed in the 2005 draft for Alex smith “the future of their franchise” lol sad, but very funny!
-----------
You are delusional if you think Rodgers would have succeeded in the heaping pile of dung we had for coaching in SF the last 8 years. There's something to be said about stability and good coaching not to mention sitting behind and learning from a HOFamer.

I'd ask for more than a 3rd for Flynn.

You can go draft some college guy in the first and spend 3 years getting him to a point where he may or may not be able to play with the big boys. Oh and give him 50 million before he's proven a thing.

Or you can ship a 2nd and a 3rd or just a first for a guy like Flynn who's already been in camps, knows how the NFL works and went toe to toe with the best QB in the league and did VERY well. He's already shown he can produce against NFL talent (superbowl talent) and not against college talent which isn't ALWAYS the best....

Looking at it from a good GM's perspective - I'd rather spend a first round pick with GB for a QB that's got NFL experience against NFL talent and I'll be able (more than likely) to get him for less than some guaranteed contract to an unproven junior from a college.
