Rob Ryan stuck in limbo

Rob Ryan

With the Panthers head coaching job going to Ron Rivera, Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is waiting to find out where his next gig will be.

Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports the Browns may be interested in keeping him, depending on who gets the head coaching job.

Ryan and other Browns staff members remain under contract and in limbo.   (Better to be in limbo than playing limbo, which Rob could struggle at.)  Grossi writes that the organization may want to bring back Ryan and special teams coordinator Brad Seely.

We love the idea of Ryan staying in Cleveland.  Eric Mangini and Ryan improved the team’s defense without a ton of talent and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to start over.  Pat Shurmur is believed to be the favorite for the Browns head coaching job and has no experience coaching defense.

Another possibility for Rob Ryan could be another tour of duty in Oakland, where Hue Jackson is reportedly lining up a staff.

We want him to stay in Cleveland.

he could rejoin the Pats staff; they technically haven’t named a d-coordinator. the Pats / Jets rivalry would escalate even higher.

    Awesome photo!

That picture makes me think he may be stuck going through the door rather than limbo. Dude needs to mix in a salad or two.

He should stay a DC somewhere. He is EXACTLY like his bro and that is NOT a good thing for a HC but it’s a great thing for a DC.
Warren Sapp was asked many many weeks ago about Rob being a HC and since he played for him AND is a very straightforward guy who doesn’t pander to people I took his opinion very seriously. Sapp said that like Monte Kiffin, Ryan is way, way too emotional to be a good HC. I agree. Being overly emotional is a coordinator mentality that doesn’t translate well to HC.

Rob Ryan and Auburn’s Nick Fairley sounds like a combo worthy of a Mile High Salute.

Rob Ryan is a good choice to keep, but please get him some fast, tackling machine linebakers!! You can’t run a 3-4 with average at best backers. I like Marcus Benard and Scott Fujita, the rest have to go. No QB pressure is why the secondary keeps getting torched

  8. cletusvandam says: Jan 11, 2011 3:52 PM

why isn’t he a candidate for Clevelands HC job?

  9. dolphins4 says: Jan 11, 2011 3:53 PM

Hopefully Andy Reid will hire him to be the Eagles new defensive coordinator. With his defense and Andys offense the Eagles would be unstopable.

Well I don’t think it’s very fair that this guy is on the move yet again. He’s performed admirably coaching defenses in different cities. I would gladly take him here in NY should Fewell be given a coaching job elsewhere. And that’s with knowing he’s just like his brother, whom I can’t stand.

    But hey, talent is talent.

If he goes without a job offer this off-season for at least a coordinator position I will be shocked.

He needs to stay in Cleveland! A couple of players via draft and free agency and we will have a solid D. Plus at least his only fetish as far as we know is cheeseburgers!

San Diego needs a DC and he could take over soon when they bail on Norv. If he was a short-list guy for a few different HC openings, why isn’t he considered for the Browns HC job?

  13. gmen2dabowl says: Jan 11, 2011 4:08 PM

I know Tom Coughlin wouldnt like the circus it would create but IF Perry Fewell gets any of these HC jobs then I wouldnt mind seeing Rob Ryan working for the New York Giants, I know its a 3-4 but other then John Fox there isn’t anyone else running a 4-3 that I would want so but what do I know, theres always the next Steve Spags hiding we just need to find him……but just for the record I WANT Coach Fewell to stay 100%

Yeah….Philly just needs a QB now that will take them to the next level. Something Vick will never do. Book that.

Tony Grossi, is the man who is personaly keeping art modell out of the Hall of fame. how does one journalist do this. the man has done a ton for pro football as a whole and you were with out a team for 3 years. Baltimore had 13 years. LA is going into double digits. you had 3. Can we call the horrible losing streak in vleveland the art modell curse? they wont win a pl;ayoff game until art gets into the HOF?

  24. biglebronski says: Jan 11, 2011 6:10 PM

I hope Tony Grossi is right, but the fact is that Grossi does nothing except speculate based on his own feelings. He does no leg work, but instead inserts the words “may,” “might,” or “should” into the headlines of his articles.

Lebron leaves Cleveland and all the bars and restaurants lose business. Mangini, Ryan and Crennel leave Cleveland and all the Golden Corrals say rejoice!
Seriously, let’s keep Ryan as DC and bring in John Fox or Jon Gruden. Pat Shurmur is another Chris Palmer waiting to happen. Murlarkey, Shurmur, and Fewell hardly give Cleveland fans a reason to be optimistic. Take a lesson from the Cavs. Bring in Larry Hughes or Antwawn Jamison (e.g. The Shurmurs and Mularkey’s i.e. mediocre bums) and you will achieve mediocre results. Bring in a Gruden, Cowher or Fox and you might go somewhere.

C -Town needs a prime time coach not another unknown coordinator. No college coaches. We need someone with who can motivate and lead. Enough bargain basement bums !

Rob Ryan and his 4th quarter prevent defense can stay the hell away from Oakland. Rob was a master at putting together a great defensive strategy for 3 quarters which kept the raiders in the game. Then the 4th quarter would come and he would play prevent instead of doing what worked the first 3 quarters? And there was nothing more frustrating than watching warren sapp drop back from defensive tackle to cover the middle of the field. This guy should not coach anywhere.

  27. shaggeez says: Jan 11, 2011 7:45 PM

Hire him in tennessee and get rid of that clown chuck cecil. If it works out, he can be successor to jeff fisher when jeff gets axed in the middle of next season.

Funny how i post a comment about Aso staying if Hue is coach(which is now rounding out his potential staff) and brings in Rob Ryan, then all of a sudden you got a posting about Hue and Rob. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I thought you guys “broke” news, not regurgitated it.

This is the kind of guy Dallas needs. He is the anti-Wade. They need some pirate fire on that staff of suits.

I feel bad for Rob! He might not get the chance because of his loudmouth twin brother!
Maybe he got all the brains?
