Wannstedt eyes NFL return

Former Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt likely won’t soon be coaching another NFL team, years after stints with the Bears and Dolphins.  But Wannstedt is still seeing a demand for his services at the NFL level.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen report that Wannstedt could be reuniting with former Cowboys colleague Norv Turner as defensive coordinator of the Chargers.  He also could be headed to Carolina, to serve as defensive coordinator under former Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera.

The Bills and Browns also are interested in Wannstedt.

Wannstedt spent six years with the Bears and four seasons and nine games with the Dolphins.

Well I could see him being a position coach or something. That was my first thought. But then they’re suggesting here that there is a demand for his services at the coordinator level for not one but possibly 2 teams?

The Stache didn’t exactly light it up at Pitt. I don’t understand how is stock is even that high, or how he has stock at all, to be honest.

    Good DC, lousy HC.

Dave Wannstedt and Norv Turner – twins?

Both have a face like an ashtray – no butts about it.

Maybe Dave will bring everything he learned at Pitt with him. Good luck!

I don’t know anything about the guy, but the Eagles are probably in the market for a DC.

Wannstedt is a really good defensive coach and a good man hopefully he’ll get another coaching job soon.

are the Charger trying to ruin their franchise to the point where they are 2-14?

  7. toonsterwu says: Jan 11, 2011 3:56 PM

Chargers seem an odd fit unless Wanntstedt wants to run a 3-4 there … or Norv wants to switch them to a 4-3. I don’t know, off the top, Wanntstedt’s background with the 3-4.

On the other hand, no one displays worry and fear better than Wanstache.

    I always liked the guy…

God forbide that Dave Wanntstedt is teamed with Ron Turner in NC. Ron Don’t do it! Chargers might be the place for the Stache ! He screwed up the Bears for 5 years after he was fired. Caveat emptor to the idiot team that hires this wiener! “I have also all the pieces in place”

    yeah right!!

    **Memo to Chargers fans**

Dont be fooled by the great moustache and silky smooth hair. It all reeks of looser. Take it from a phins fan he’s no good. He even has a restaurant down here called Wanny McStashes.

    Vanilla offense with no nuts.

The Browns won’t hire a DC before they have a HC. Plus Ryan is still on the job as DC.

It’s still amazes me that he is really a viable coaching candidate anywhere in the NFL. “Hey losers hire loser coach friends to coach !” The last time he was a cordinator was back in 1992 for Dallas Cowboys! Jerry Jones get your defensive mojo boy back and get on with your bad self!

Remember when Brian Cox stood in the end zone with his helmet off to protest his won team?

That;s what i remember of Dave Wandstats career

Wannstedt also has ties to Chan Gailey in Buffalo. Gailey served a stint at OC in Miami while Wannstedt was head coach.

The guy is one HELL of a coordinator and you’d be foolish to not give this guy a second look. Like Dick LeBeau I believe Wanstedt will get another chance in the NFL after being a HC and like Lebeau he will be very successful as a Def Coordinator. I hope Jim Harbaugh gives Wanstedt a look. I hope someone does.

I don’t see him being a fit in Buffalo, unless the Bills unexpectedly make a change at DC. I don’t see Wannstedt at this point accepting a job as a position coach.

Wanny’s the one who ran Ricky Williams about 600 times in a season and made him want to retire to smoke weed.

As a Dolphin fan, I speak for many when I say…YOU CAN HAVE HIM.

  21. canesfan56 says: Jan 11, 2011 5:45 PM

Wasn’t Dave W the genius who chose Tyler Palco over Joe Flacco at Pitt? Dave’s career has been going downhill since his stint as the Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator.

  22. polegojim says: Jan 11, 2011 5:48 PM

NO NO NO – Michigan DC.

Dave, wake up, and head North where we FILL the stadium.

This is a joke isn’t it? Are you really comparing DW to Dick LeBeau?

Today is trash day. This garbage didn’t need to be let out of the bag. Stay in college Dave.

It just goes to prove what matters is who you know not what you know. How this guy stays employed is a mystery to me.
Is he bringing his lobster traps with him to San Diego?

  26. rodge1 says: Jan 11, 2011 6:50 PM

Very good defensive coordinator, terrible coach. Ask Bear & Dolphins fans. Still cannot forgive him for drafting Jamar Fletcher, Eddie Moore, & other wasted picks.

Wannstedt is married to the 3/4 deep gap cover two defense. Do not if he would be a good fit for SD however he is an effective DC.

  29. halftermguv says: Jan 11, 2011 7:48 PM

Wannstedt is a good guy, excellant recruiter but not a head coach. Brought in loads of talent but never had the team hungry enough to win half a dozen games over the last three years that would saved him.

Don’t play revisionist history about Joe Flacco leaving Pitt. Tyler Palko was clearly better than “slow Joe” whose his laid back demeanor gave little confidence to the team and staff. Flacco leaving was barely a news item when it happened.

  30. phillyfinsfan says: Jan 11, 2011 8:04 PM

I’d hire him to make sure the Gatorade cooler was always full and cold.

  31. commandercornpone says: Jan 11, 2011 8:43 PM

    as a DC, ok.

despite the fact the bears faded away under his coaching, they did block and tackle and play D well. and they werent turnover machines. still, it’s a miracle they won some of those games. just awful vanilla.

even seemingly vanilla offensive coaches… ditka, cowher… knew that u had to spring a trick somewhere somehow during a close hard fought bad weather game.
