as a DC, ok.

despite the fact the bears faded away under his coaching, they did block and tackle and play D well. and they werent turnover machines. still, it’s a miracle they won some of those games. just awful vanilla.

even seemingly vanilla offensive coaches… ditka, cowher… knew that u had to spring a trick somewhere somehow during a close hard fought bad weather game.

Wannstedt is a good guy, excellant recruiter but not a head coach. Brought in loads of talent but never had the team hungry enough to win half a dozen games over the last three years that would saved him.

Don’t play revisionist history about Joe Flacco leaving Pitt. Tyler Palko was clearly better than “slow Joe” whose his laid back demeanor gave little confidence to the team and staff. Flacco leaving was barely a news item when it happened.

Wannstedt is married to the 3/4 deep gap cover two defense. Do not if he would be a good fit for SD however he is an effective DC.

Wannstedt also has ties to Chan Gailey in Buffalo. Gailey served a stint at OC in Miami while Wannstedt was head coach.

It’s still amazes me that he is really a viable coaching candidate anywhere in the NFL. “Hey losers hire loser coach friends to coach !” The last time he was a cordinator was back in 1992 for Dallas Cowboys! Jerry Jones get your defensive mojo boy back and get on with your bad self!
