A day after Auburn quarterback Cam Newton announced that he was entering the NFL draft, Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley followed suit.
Fairley isn’t quite as well known as Newton, but Fairley is generally considered a better pro prospect, and possibly the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, if the Carolina Panthers take a liking to him.
The 6-foot-5, 298-pound Fairley won the Lombardi Award as college football’s best lineman or linebacker and led the SEC in sacks (11.5) and tackles for loss (24).
ESPN’s Mel Kiper is among those who list Fairley as the No. 1 overall prospect in the draft.

Fairley has great hearing. As soon as Kirk Herbstreit ripped him for getting in cheap shots throughout the season, he started blowing up Oregon’s line.
Like I said earlier in the week…He’ll be giving the Mile High Salute in Denver.
…and also should go as the #1 overall dirty player in this year’s draft as well.
An excellent, but a dirty player. Twisting helmets during the BCS championship.
Realizing the Combines and Private Workouts can change things….
The Panthers would be crazy to pass on this kid.
top 3 pick
With the 2nd pick of the 2011 NFL Draft……
The Denver Broncos select Nick Fairley!
Please come anchor our D line for the next 10 years. Thank you.
Mel Kiper sucks
“ESPN’s Mel Kiper is among those who list Fairley as the No. 1 overall prospect in the draft.”
Well that pretty much dooms the poor kid.
So now it’s between him and Bowers for the #1 spot. I like Bowers but Fairley will probably be the pick.
cash in man!!! SMART!
get it now b4 a rookie wage scale is induced!
Good luck Nick!
i desperatly would love to have him on the bills. This is exactly what we need. im hoping carolina takes bowers, then denver takes patrick peterson, then he lands to us. go bills
Michael Clark Duncan could play him in the Scam Newton movie coming to ESPN 14.
He will tuirn in to another Fat Albert Haynesworth.
Better learn not to suplex the QB, he’ll be racking up bigger fines than Harrison.
Sorry Broncos and Bills fans on here. He will not be available for you at picks 2 or 3. The Panthers have got to draft him. We are not taking Bowers, so dont get your hopes up. Charles Johnson was 7th in the NFL for us this year, with 11.5 sacks (Tied with Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, not bad company huh?? Johnson also had more tackles then either of them). We dont need a DE.
After Jenkins left, we struggled. Then we got Kemo for a few years, not bad. Now, we pretty much have 4 defensive ends on the line. We need the size and the attitude he brings.
Come to Denver, Nick!
Great player but he’ll get his share of 15 yard penalties, one of the dirtiest players I’ve ever seen in the SEC.
Fairley is a stud…and i think he proved that in the National Championship
He had a great year. Total unknown prior to this year. I am not totally sold. He is quick off the line but I don’t see him being another Suh. Maybe a McCoy, but not Suh.
He kind of reminds be of Albert Haynesworth.
I swear scouts overcomplicate the draft process. There is no way Farley should drop based on his measurables at the combine. His game film proves it all. He is a bonifide stud 4-3 three- technique.
After watching the Jets push the Colts around the field at the end of the game one would think that they need a player of his ability. Dump the bookends and bring in a big man.
Could you imagine if Baltimore was to get him????
Good Luck in Carolina, Nick. You are going to get plenty of work since Clausen cannot maintain a drive more than 3 downs.
Dareus, Bowers Green, Fairley and Petersen should go in the top five. Who will Cleveland go with ? Blaine Gabbert or Robert Quinn? Cam Newton or Jake Locker ? Nope, they will trade down for more special teamers and 6 th round picks lol
He is a monster on the field… but this guy needs to stay in school and take a few public speaking and english classes. Did you hear him after Auburn won the game?
Mel Kiper also said Jimmy Clausen was the most NFL ready quarterback last year. How did that turn out?
