Harbaugh adds Ed Donatell to Niners’ staff

CORRECTION Broncos 49ers Football

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh went a long way toward filling out his coaching staff Friday by hiring Vic Fangio to coordinate the defense, Greg Roman to coordinate the offense, and Tim Drevno to oversee the tight ends and/or offensive line. All three coaches were on Harbaugh’s staff at Stanford.

Harbaugh has now gone outside his collegiate coaching pipeline to tab longtime NFL assistant Ed Donatell as defensive backs coach, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Donatell last coached in Denver, overseeing a secondary that helped the Broncos to rank third in the NFL in 2009. Their ranking fell to 25th in 2010, mostly because of injuries and the worst pass rush in football.

Donatell brings to San Francisco a wealth of experience both as a coordinator and position coach. He was Jim Mora’s defensive coordinator in Atlanta from 2004 until 2006, and ran the defense for Mike Sherman in Green Bay from 2000 to 2003.

Donatell was fired by Sherman after this infamous play.

I’m telling you, step by step this team is being rebuilt to succeed.

I still don’t blame Donatell for 4th and 26. It was one play that, yeah, should have been stopped but there were plenty of plays that lost that game for the Packers.

It’s a scheme that is run but it is run by players and not coaches. The players should have made the play.

OR, why can’t we just call it a good play by McNabb? He threw it right where it needed to be; just over the dropping MLB and between the two safeties.

I think Ed Donatell is a good coach railroaded by one play.

hurry up Mr. Ed and get on the phone and book this boy a flight to Denver before it’s to late!

    hellllllllllooooooooooooo Wilbur!

4th and 26 – Bwao Jue and Darren Sharper at fault. Sharper’s been giving up big plays in the playoffs his entire career.

    That said Donatell still sucks.

4th & 26th lead to Donatell’s dismissal but that’s because Mike Sherman sucks and needed a fall guy. So Ed stepped up to the plate.

Stanford vs the NFC WEAK I love it! Too bad they will win within their division….AND GET SMOKED outside their division. College game is way different from the pro game. Bringing in all these college coahes to run the team will BACKFIRE! Just ask Bobby Petrino, Nick Saben, Steve Spurier, Mike Riley, Dennis Erickson….etc GREAT MOVE WHINERS!!!!

I believe Donatell was the purple one with the bo staff.

    Raiderob,
I just asked Bobby Petrino, Nick Saben, Steve Spurier, Mike Riley, Dennis Erickson and they all agreed that you’re an idiot.

of course dumb thing are always said by raiderrob21.

Raiderrob21 – Vic is a long time nfl assistant who learned under Don Capers and runs his system and greg spent 13 years in nfl with Carolina, Houston and Baltimore.

It came out later that Donatell called a blitz on the 4 and 26th play (which makes sense…force a quick throw and tackle), but Sherman overroad him and went prevent.

Think before you speak, please. Saban had the Dolphins going in the right direction til he bolted for Alabama, and both Jimmy Johnson and Barry Swiitzer were college coaches.

    @ ninerdynasty
NFL assistant. SHOW ME SOME NFL COORDINATORS WITH EXPERIENCE.
And not experience like Donatello with his GREAT DENVER D! LOL!

Great move by bringing in your college buddies! Worked great for Butch Davis, Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino and Nick Saban. Especially effective if you plan to be coaching college again in 3 years or less.

How about you take care of the Crypt Keeper before you start throwing stones…

I mean seriously, you guys just fired the best coach you have had since Madden (not the game!) and now you are bagging on the Niners – PLEASE…

    @raiderrob21

I’d be mad too if the team across the bay caused my HC to be fired, and while 31 other teams are looking at personnel moves, the Raiders don’t even have a HC. Only Al was dumb enough to hire Kiffin and now you just get to watch another prodigy go across the bay. Ouch…. Just win..Maybe!

I think we need to get our own house in order, before we call out , S.F. Need I remind you we lost to them at Candlestick? Good hire, and S.F. should be respectable. Will be good to see the two former college coaches , Carroll and Harbaugh getting after it. Should be a fun rivalry.

Jim Harbaugh succeeds at every level. Betting against him is not too smart.

  21. puddinpouch says: Jan 15, 2011 10:59 AM

The Niners were supposed to own that division the last three years. I never took them as more than a .500 team since all the talk began with Singletary. Of course, I didn’t know .500 could take that division either.

They’ve got some ground to cover before we start handing them the coveted NFC West crown. They are no further down the road to answering their QB questions than Arizona (or Seattle, once Hasselbeck’s hip blows out), I know that. Should have kept Hill.

  22. 49ersmang says: Jan 15, 2011 1:46 PM

Raiderrob, it’s hard for us niners fans to come back at you with anything since the Raiders are an example of how a lofty highly functional classy establishment stays in perpetual contention year after year with no whifs on very high draft picks. Your future HOF coach currently running your team is coveted by all the other teams, he’s a mastermind and a class act, just like your young , handsome & very intelligent owner, not to mention the franchise quarterback who beats us everytime our teams play each other especially the last 3 games, and Namdi asomgwaaaa??? Says hi!!!!!!!

  23. marcsasharc says: Jan 19, 2011 5:28 PM

id be pissed too if i were Raider fan and the other team across the bay is outclassing you this offseason. must be hard to be a Raiders fan.
