As Seahawks quarterback Matthew Hasselbeck prepares to attempt to finagle what would be a huge upset at Soldier Field against the Bears, Rachel Nichols of ESPN reports that Hasselbeck had 15 cc’s of fluid drained from his injured hip/thigh area on Saturday night, with a 14-gauge needle.
Hasselbeck played eight days ago against the Saints, but he missed the Week 17 NFC West none-of-the-above title game.
The veteran quarterback did not appear on the injury report this week. We’d wonder how big the needle would have had to be in order to result in Hasselbeck appearing on the report as virtually certain to be available for normal duties, i.e., probable.

Still would take Hasselbeck over Cutler in a playoff game.
Relax…. That is slightly less than a tablspoon of fluid. No need to add him to the injury report. He will probably bleed and spit more than that on the field today.

When I first read this I completely dismissed it. And then I thought to myself “wait, wow. He’s right. It’s sad, but he’s right.”
There’s no reference for size at all in that picture…and it’s actually the smallest of the 3 needles featured on the linked site. Nice
Only time will tell….
Needles get smaller as the numbers get higher. A needle used for an IV in someone’s hand might be a 22-gauge. A 14-gauge is a fairly substantial needle.
Hasselbeck had his hip drained before the Saints game too… this is a non-story.
But it was the #2 gauge wire they sewed him back up with that really hurt.
