Deion Branch rebukes “no class” Jets

Deion Branch

Four years ago, former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson took aim at the Patriots after they knocked off the 14-2 top seed in San Diego, prompting some of them to do Shawne Merriman’s “lights out” routine in the middle of the field.

Said Tomlinson at the time:  “I can’t sit there and watch that.  And so, yeah, I was very upset.  And just the fact that they showed no class at all.  Absolutely no class.  And maybe that comes from their head coach.  So you know, there you have it.”

The tables turned Sunday, when Tomlinson’s current team knocked off the 14-2 top seed in New England.  Some of the Jets apparently were too exuberant, prompting New England receiver Deion Branch to take a page out of the L.T. playbook.

“I think the embarrassing part came after the game, with some of the classless guys they have on their football team,” Branch said after the game, according to the Boston Herald.  “That’s their style.  You have to expect that.  They’re going to do that from now until they’re gone.  Half the guys on the field, it was shameful, the guys with no class, that stuff comes back to bite you.”

Branch said that some Jets were taunting Patriots fans after the game.  Some Patriots, including Branch, opted not to shake hands with some Jets players because of it.

“I’m a champion.  I’m always congratulating guys upon victory,” Branch said. “They beat us today.  They beat us when it mattered.  The ones with class, I shook their hands. The other ones, I didn’t. . . . For them to act like that, you can tell they’re not used to being in this position.”

We don’t have a problem with players directing smack-talk between and among themselves, before, during, or after a game.  Most fans prefer to finger-pointing than handshakes between players from rival teams.  But when the players start to get into with the fans, that’s when the line is crossed.

At a time when the NFL is trying to get more and more people to choose to pay good money to attend games in person in lieu of watching the games on HD/3D televisions in the comfort of their own homes, the last thing the league wants to see is players making the experience less enjoyable for the paying customers.

LaDainian Tomlinson- 2006, Deion Branch- 2011, the only difference is that LT isnt sorry for going to Foxboro and finally beating the Patriots, somewhere right now Marty Schottenheimer is smiling and saying L.T. you got your revenge for me too.

    1) I hope the Jets beat the Steelers.
    2) I think the NFL needs to make sure the Jets and other teams, behave properly so that the NFL does not become like Overseas soccer with hooligans. It is important to be able to take your kids ot an NFL game and not worry about language, behavior or safety.
    3) If antics, taunting in the media, foul language continues, kids will emulate that on the playground and at schools.
    4) It isn’t a problem yet, but let’s clean it up and keep the battle on the tundra, and out of the stands

  4. moochzilla says: Jan 17, 2011 8:46 AM

So here we have a guy who screams at the opposing team’s coach after making a catch, and then won’t shake hands after the game? And he derides others for not having any ‘class’?

Yep, I guess he’s ‘classy’ in a McNabb kind of way. Do as I say and not as I do.

EVERY team that wins on the road has players that engage with the fans that stay behind to curse and boo them. Every one of them. It’s a common sight on the telecast as they wrap it up.

But the Jets (who I wasn’t even cheering for) do it and get singled out. They’re the Eagles fans of NFL players.

I recall 3 of those Patriots in the 2005 AFC Championship (2004 season) in Pittsburgh.

They were dancing right in front of us pointing to the crowd. They were rubbing it in. I will never forget it. No Class at all. None.

Dieon Branch was part of that team.

  7. boknowsvt says: Jan 17, 2011 8:49 AM

Fans give it to players all the time. Players are just giving it back. Kinda like that Seinfeld episode where he goes to the hecklers office and heckles her. The Jets players are just living the dream.

  8. jimmy1smith says: Jan 17, 2011 8:52 AM

Here’s a novel idea, beat them on the scoreboard and then you won’t have to subject yourself to their behavior.

Seriously, when you lose, you are better off just shutting your mouth because anything that comes out of it looks like poor sportsmanship no matter the validity of your point.

Down two scores and this guy is preening after a meaningless catch and talking to the Jets sideline. Then he drops the most crucial pass of the game.. yet now we need to listen to his lecture on class?

Class is over rated.. this is football. Just win.

Keep crying pats!! Maybe if you didn’t get dominated on your home turf you wouldn’t have had to deal with that. Can’t believe the pats are really gonna cry about that after they have done the SAME thing for years. You got whipped face it and accept it. Have fun watching the jets on Sunday play for the super bowl.

  15. herokravon says: Jan 17, 2011 9:03 AM

Its time to move on because Pittsburgh has an extra 24 hours rest and moved past Baltimore real fast and will be waiting for you Sunday night.

Says the guy who after a 10-15 yard catch near the Jets sidelines (still down 10 pts mind you) hops up and walks towards Rex Ryan bobbin his head and yeppin. The ref had to get in front of him to send him back to the huddle. What a whiner.

  22. hooterdawg says: Jan 17, 2011 9:24 AM

Patriot fans are known to be some of the most obnoxious and classless fans in the NFL. In the stadium and on the internet. PFT has no idea how those disappointed and shocked Patsie fans behaved toward those hated Jet players. You only have to read your own forum to see how much Patsie fans hate everything about the Jets. So NOW you are going to get on your soap box and castigate victorious Jet players for responding to obnoxious taunting by a stadium full of angry, shocked fans after a humiliating loss to a team they all expected to crush for the second time since December? Yes, every football fan remembers how the Belichick led Patriots tried to humiliate the Chargers by dancing on their team logo on the field 4 years ago? Would Belichick apologize for his teams behavior? Nada. The Jets owe no apology either. Payback is a MoFo. It’s part of the game. Players have to be restrained DURING a game and show composure and maturity not to respond to the tainting they are subjected to on the road. But don’t tell me they have to be boy scouts after the game.

  23. oranjellojones says: Jan 17, 2011 9:25 AM

Dunno if their players deserve it but I have zero sympathy for the Patriot fan base in this case. They’re the only ones who took the time out to talk Sean freakin Taylor death smack to me as I walked past in the Boston airport to visit family. I know, I had the gall to wear a Redskins hat with the Number 21 on it…oh the Horror! To be clear this wasn’t isolated, it happened several times on the same trip both coming and going. Funny, not a peep in New York or Philly where the Redskins actually have rivals but the Pats fans…aww yea “all class”.

I guess what comes around goes around.

That says it all…it really does. The Jets deserve to do whatever they want. If they want to act like idiots…that’s up to them and they’ve earned the right. If you don’t want them doing it, win the game and then do what YOU want.

Like Brady said after the last Jets game…”When you win say little, when you lose say even less.”

I’m sick and tired of these overly sensitive millionaire man babies crying when they lose. I didn’t hear Deon Branch say they shouldn’t have scored 45 points on them earlier in the season. Shut-up and go home. I love any team that beats The Pats at home.

“But when the players start to get into with the fans, that’s when the line is crossed… the last thing the league wants to see is players making the experience less enjoyable for the paying customers.”

Unbelieveable naivete. Did you actually write that? I absolutely believe that Roger Goodell and anyone who REALLY understands the game of football doesn’t agree with your statement. This is a mans game, not the wussie game you think it is. In fact, the league office TELLS the players not to allow their emotions get the best of them DURING the game. How players taunt in response to taunting fans AFTER the game is nothing they would dare to lecture celebrating players on as long as players don’t fight and throw things at the fans. Not that BAWSTUN fans don’t often deserve it.

  30. jvw1982 says: Jan 17, 2011 9:42 AM

Fans? what fans? the only fans in the stadium were Jet fans lol…..When Shonne Greene put the Pats to sleep the fans hit the exits…….the greatest and smartest fans (self proclaimed) was on Rt 1 by the time the game was over…..and I loved it

  31. phinsfan66 says: Jan 17, 2011 9:43 AM

  32. hooterdawg says: Jan 17, 2011 9:47 AM

BTW, if you wanna read classless, go to boston .com and witness BAWSTUN fans ream Brady, Belichick, and others on their team for choking and being outcoached in their most important game of the year. BAWSTUN fans hate to eat crow, and they have been dumping on the Jets all year for being frauds. They are choking BIGTIME on crow now, and blaming everyone associated with the team for putting them in the humilating position of witnessing another teams success at their expense. BAWSTUN fans give Belichick a D for getting outcoached by Rex, and presumed MVP Bradya C- for choking again in his 3rd playoff game in a row.

Here’s another display of pure class from the Patriots fans.

    According to the Boston Herald:

“Jets coach Rex Ryan was pelted with ice and soft drinks as he strode off the field past Pats die-hards…”

    Yup. Class.

  34. deadmanwalking47 says: Jan 17, 2011 9:50 AM

coming from a team that runs up the score every chance they get,i consider what the jets did after the game really kind in comparison than what the pats do every chance they get! i respect belichik’s genius, but some of the things he allows his team to do are just out right ignorant!this was only a beginning of the payback the pats deserve from not just the jets, but the whole nfl!

  35. goldenflash30 says: Jan 17, 2011 10:00 AM

So let me get this straight…fans are allowed to taunt players before, during and after games, but players aren’t allowed to say anything back? That’s expecting an awful lot of them, isn’t it?

How about this: Say you have a normal office job and you have to turn in some huge report by the end of the day. As you’re writing said report, some obnoxious guy is standing next to your computer telling you how much you suck and how you’ll never be able to finish it. Now, imagine there are 70,000 people doing that. You’re telling me you wouldn’t rub it in a little if you not only finished it, but did a great job on it?

Of course you would. That’s the normal human reaction…which is why I’m not going to berate the Jets for what they did, even though I’m far from a Jets fan.

Not to mention that, as many above me have pointed out, the Patriots aren’t exactly known as classy winners. Now we know they’re sore losers, too.

  36. j0esixpack says: Jan 17, 2011 10:00 AM

Leave it be Deion – as if people don’t know Tomlinson has no class?

First he tries to steal Lawrence Taylor’s nickname

Then after every loss to the Patriots he boldly states that he’d win 9 out of 10 games against them.

Factoring in all the losses and last night’s win, he only has to win another 20 straight games or so against the Patriots to back up his smack talk

  37. infectorman says: Jan 17, 2011 10:01 AM

stuff that happens immediately post game can mostly be chalked up to adreniline and elation after winning. I could care less what a Jets/NE player or fan does b4/after a game..

But seriously, if you wanna debate class, which team was throwing out the F bombs, personal attacks, and physical threats to the other leading up to the game?

Is that the example you want to set for your children? (All 31 of them?) Many of you w/o kids will laugh at this, but when you grow up enuf to be in the situation where you’re trying to teach YOUR child about class/sportsmanship, then you’ll see the point
    Class? please, spare me

  38. steeelfann says: Jan 17, 2011 10:02 AM

Patriots fans have a universal dislike for Rex Ryan, but if this report is true, this is despicable behavior from a fan base that should know you have to tip your hat to the other team in a game like this where they so thoroughly dominated us.

However, I read the article and cannot forget that the Boston Herald is the same newspaper that was forced to admit they completely fabricated the “Matt Walsh taped the Ram’s walk-through” story. Their credibility should be zilch to ANY fan. Their bias against the Patriots is proven and undeniable. God knows WHAT this reporter actually witnessed, if anything at all.

  41. jcjets says: Jan 17, 2011 10:21 AM

I think this shows your lack of understanding of what it means to be a fan of an NFL team. Fans talk smack all the time between fans. Fans talk smack to the players all the time (when given the opportunity), and online. And you think its crossing the line for the players to give it back to the fans a little bit? Cmon man.

Ive been to games where the fans were taunting players, and I don’t know what the jets did exactly, but if they waved bye-bye to the fans, or said “see ya next year” what is wrong with that?

And as someone else said, Deion Branch was classless to the Jets sideline and coach. Just like Welker was classless with his feet comments. Don’t believe me? Then why did Belichick bench welker?

The bottom line is the Pats are a very good team, they have all those draft picks next year, still have a great coach and QB..but yesterday was the Jets day.

  42. patssmelllikepoo says: Jan 17, 2011 10:23 AM

I love Patriot fans! You talk smack all week long, feet this, slaughter that. Showing no class whatsoever. Then when the game goes in the wrong direction you start calling everybody “classless”. I think this is a top down problem. The Patriot organization is snobby and hypocritical and it seems fans have latched on to that. Branch yaps all game long even towards Ryan, no problem. Jets celebrate, “classless”. Welker runs his mouth, he is clever and witty. Jets talk, of course they are “classless”. Tommy-Terrific taunts a sideline, he does his talking on the field. Bart Scott lets out is frustrations about how weak the Jets were perceived, yep, “classless”.
In short Patriot fans, get over yourselves your just not that good anymore and Nobody cares how classy you thing your eliminated franchise is!!

  43. blackglass3 says: Jan 17, 2011 10:27 AM

What strikes me as hypocritical is when LdT says “The Patriots have no class!” the nation just nods their heads and agrees. But when it’s said about another team everyone gets on here and defends that team.

Also, why do you guys hate the Patriots so much? It’s been choke city there since 2005. Isn’t there a new team to move on and cry anonymously on message boards about?

  44. steelersnh43 says: Jan 17, 2011 10:30 AM

Is Deion Branch kidding with this? He sounds like an cry baby. He was taunting the Jets sideline while his team was losing. He’s also taunted the Steelers fans in Pittsburgh after the Pats beat them in the AFC Title game the second time. Classic case of sour grapes.

  45. harpoo51 says: Jan 17, 2011 10:31 AM

What the NFL needs today is a latter-day Vince Lombardi who wouldn’t put up with players doing this kind of classless crap. From either team. Whatever happened to sportmanship? And off of this topic, when I become an owner EVERY player will have to cut their damn hair. No more of this flowing locks from under the helmet crap. Polamalu, Brady, Matthews and every other player will have to cut that damn mess! Taunting players will get heavily fined and sat down.

Am I the only sane person here? LDT did nothing to help his team in those games, the only LDT i remember is the one sitting on the bench with his coat on and helmet on because he was “injuried”. Don’t cry if you don’t perform. look at his regular season vs playoff stats.

and please, get over this “cheating” crap, video taping doesn’t help you tackle or avoid tackles. The game is played on the field.

PS: i am a dolphin fan and no way do i think the “breaking of the rules” means “cheating to 3 super bowls” like you bitter fans are. I hate the patriots too but lets be honest and reasonable.

Okay, so Tom Brady spiking the ball in the endzone in Pittsburgh this season and then staring down the FANS is okay? The Lights Out dance in San Diego? The countless times I’ve seen the players wave goodbye to all the fans? How about Deion Branch himself mocking the terrible towels during the AFC Championship game?

D’awwww…. pot hurt kettle’s wittle feewings. At least the Jets had the cajones to mock the actual people on the field and not the ones who, you know, don’t actually play the game.

Wow That’s hilarious…a Patriot player complaining about no class? Does he remember San Diego in 06? Dancing on the 50 yard line mocking the SD players? CLassssssyyyyyy! To me this just seems like turnabout being fair play as far as I’m concerned…and please dont compare Branch to LT…Branch is a great role player AT BEST! What has he done without Tom Brady? NADA! Meanwhile LT will go down as one of the top ten running backs of ALL TIME…oh and I know all you are waiting to compare his post season stats to regular but 1) he’s never played for a great organization that wins rings like bellichecks pats…he worked for AJ smith (aka the lord of no rings) and many ppl forget this..but that 2006 game…before his injury issues…the game vs. the Pats that I’m referring to…LT had 120 yds rushing…go look it up….everyone remembers him sulking in 07 after his groin injury….but to be fair by the time LT had playoff opportunities he was already nearing the end of his peak years…he played in just one playoff game until the age of 27.

Saint Bruschi (to the Pats fans at least) says this on ESPN:

“In 2006, when we beat the San Diego Chargers, players stood on the logo and did Shawne Merriman’s “Lights Out” dance. In the 45-3 victory over the Jets in the regular season, Patriots players were celebrating by doing the “Jet” around the field with their arms outstretched. So to see the Jets fly their Jets around the field and in the end zone, and Shonn Greene use the football as a pillow because he was putting the Patriots to sleep, that’s what you should have expected to see. It was a knockout blow. The game was over. Rex Ryan was right when he said it was the second biggest game in the Jets’ franchise history. They deserved to celebrate. It’s all within the game, but it’s more magnified when it ends a team’s season.”

    So suck it up Branch.

as far as running the score up we do that because of the alleged spy gate BS that every team does we just got caught at it because we basically suck at cheating bottom line! If you know the Patriots you will know for some reason their hearts were not into that game Perhaps they felt bad about pounding the Jets before what ever the reason. Ive never EVER seen Wes Welker drop a ball like that in the end zone it was as if it was on purpose!! Where was the helmet to helmet call when that punk took the cheap shot on Woodhead leading with his helmet? Remember, when the paint chips flew off Woodheads helmet . Pats receivers wee getting mugged by Jet secondaries and got no calls. I bet we find out in 10-20 years Brady & the team were paid off by rich NY muckie mucks to lose this game, mark my words Perhaps the Mexican cartel had Gisele hostage, Believe it or not winning all the time can get a little boring. . Especially when you’ve forgotten how too lose!

I do not watch the Patroits. During their “great” Superbowl runs, they (Belichick, other coaches and staff) got caught video taping opposing teams defensive signals. If you will notice the comments above, Pats fans, et al, want everyone to drop the comments and ‘grow up’, because ‘everyone does it’. I beg to differ!!! A sweeping generalization like that, attempts to drag all the NFL teams to the low level of the Pats. I only heard of a fine imposed on Belichick, and no more. The NFL can’t take away their SB wins, But I strongly believe an asterik (*) should be placed next to their SB records, indicating how they broke the rules to gain an advantage in winning the SB’s. Like it or not, that type of cheating cannot be condoned by any owner, GM, coach or player. Their actions degraded the game of football and that should NEVER be allowed or ignored within the NFL.

Sportsmanship is a dying quality. However, if you want stop someone from being an ass on your home field… well there’s one good way to prevent it.

Being overseas, I finally got to watch “Hard Knocks” with the Jets and two things jumped out at me.

    1) Rex Ryan actually seems like a pretty decent guy.

Yeah, he shoots his mouth off but we all have friends like that. Maybe not friends who have the whole foot fetish thing.. but he seemed very likable.

    2) Antonio Cromartie should be Father of the Year.

I don’t know what was better – that he couldn’t remember the names of all his kids or that at least 4 kids were 3.. and I’m betting he wasn’t married and his wife didn’t have quadruplets…

Deion Branch obviously has zero class, and is an embarrassment to his family, his team and himself. A little cry baby.

  79. patriot67 says: Jan 19, 2011 7:19 AM

No i haven’t drank in over 7 years to tell you the truth , As far as the cheating goes EVERY TEAM DOES DO IT & the year after that we went 18 -1 .Also knowing or not knowing the other teams Offensive play “thats if they do not call an audible” Really doesn’t mean a thing you still have to perform on offense to get points to win . Brady Most of you Pats haters do not know about or will give credit to the fact during our 18-1 season he would let the other team know his play just to prove a point knowing a hand signal means nothing as far as an (ASTERISK *)” I think it is spelled “goes… yea go ahead put one on the game they caught the guy at with the camera at. Not any others if thats the case just put it next to the entire NFL logo. Other than that ask Mangini about taping other teams signals. He was the master of it!! Just never caught hence the master name. Why do you think they cover their mouthes with the laminated play sheet? Because they have been spying on each other for years and years. All you people complaining about the name calling and bla bla bla this is Football not JR high girls volley ball strap a set of balls on and enjoy the spot if not they just shut up and go watch golf or something
