Al Davis takes aim at Tom Cable

Raiders owner Al Davis is now two-for-two when it comes to public takedowns of a fired head coach.  In September 2008, it was Lane Kiffin.

In January 2011, it’s Tom Cable.

Davis unloaded on the man who led the Raiders to their first non-losing season since 2002 in the press conference introducing Hue Jackson as the possibly the next man to be publicly chastised by Davis after being fired.

As detailed by the San Francisco Chronicle (we’ve also got a snippet of the performance, thanks to our friends at NBCSports.com), Davis turned to the topic of Cable as the press conference seemed to be winding down.  Davis cited the Randy Hansen incident, explaining that during an August 2009 meeting with Cable and other coaches, “Randy’s jaw was broken, to this day nobody is sure how it was broken.”

Davis also said that “[w]e had a spouse accuse the head coach of personal relations that were not good,” that the Raiders faced a lawsuit from a woman who claimed that Cable mistreated her, that Cable was “flying in friends so they could be with them the night before the game.”  (The over/under on comments containing the phrase “lay some cable” or a variation thereof is 23.5.)

“I just wasn’t going to take it anymore,” Davis said regarding the decision not to pick up an option in Cable’s contract.

Davis also confirmed that he withheld $120,000 in pay from Cable, who reportedly has filed a grievance with the league office to force the payment of the money.

  1. What is my 102 year old grandmother doing in this video and why do you keep calling her Al Davis?

  2. How can anyone not look at him and think he isn’t a zombie?

Maybe he’s sucking the life energy out of his coaches to stay alive, thus why he must fire and get new ones every few years after he drains them.

  3. hell that was a while ago, as was the hanson incident.

al could have canned him months ago. like before the 2010 season. way before it.

  4. I know it’s getting old but this guy is just ridiculous. He looks ridiculous (sorry if that is ‘ageist’), he sounds ridiculous, and he acts ridiculously. If I were a Raider fan I would be embarrassed (but apparently they aren’t – in fact, they’ll defend Davis for this).

Doesn’t he get that the last two coaches that he’s publicly flogged – Kiffin & Cable – were HIS choices as Head Coach? And his choice ALONE? Does he take responsibility for that?

Does anyone find it hilarious that he violates contracts repeatedly when he ‘feels like it’? And since NFL contracts with coaches are obscenely one sided in favor of the owners because all arbitrators are league hired (I almost wrote league OWNED), they have no chance of winning grievances.

It’s really a shame. Hue Jackson might have improved this offense, but it’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong. This is just sad.

  5. I love my Raiders with all my heart and soul, but what the @%!* is going on with Al Davis? He looks like the decaying “Mr. Jefferson” on South Park!

  6. Mike maybe you can describe to me when the league is enabled to step in for the benefit of the team. Al should be forced to sale for the repeated destruction of “his” team. Raider fans deserve better

  7. Wow, Al Davis has seen better days, no? He looks like Kuato, the creature who comes out of the guy’s stomach in Total Recall.

  8. Raider Nation:

Stop defending this man. What kind of classless fool feels the need to dump on every person he fires?

How many teams fired coaches this year? How many took time out during press conferences to dump dirt on the coach they fired?

For him to act now like he somehow took Randy Hansen’s side, after he demoted him and ran him out of the organization at the time at the time of the incident, is despicable.

The man refuses to honor contracts he signs, backstabs his players and coaches on their way out the door, and refuses to admit his mistakes (I do realize that you did not want to draft JaMarcus Russell. He is a great player. -Lane Kiffin Letter ).

Root for your team if you must- in fact, I admire your loyalty. But you don’t need to defend this lunatic anymore.

We understand- you love the Raiders. But you look foolish defending their owner.

  9. Davis is a trainwreck, and I wasn’t impressed with yet another HCoaching change, but Jackson spoke with a great passion and articulation during the press-conference. If I was a Raider fan, which I’m not, I’d be pretty excited at what Hue has done in one year with a stagnant offense.

  10. Did anyone really NOT see this coming. Cable has had his issues but none within the last year…at least. Davis’ rationale is total BS. Unless there is something that Cable actually did each time he was “fined”, I doubt Davis will win that one. If he had a problem with the incident with Hansen’s jaw he should have been man enough to handle it at that time.

  11. So why did he hire him…or keep him on after Hansen’s jaw was broken…or after the spouse abuse problems surfaced…or after he flew his friends in before game day…or…

  12. The Okland fans can be so proud of Al. He just knows the right things to say about everybody. He gets my vote for the most unprofessional owner in the NFL.

  13. This guy is a complete disgrace and seems to be wallowing in his own classlessness!

He needs to be removed, by force if necessary!

  14. Al needs to officially become the part of Darth Vader. If he’s going to speak he needs a sweet ass black helmet and a voice enhancer that makes him sound the part.

    Freaky!

  15. Good for Cable getting a job in Seattle. The Raiders are still a freaking mess but at least now that JaMarshmellow is gone, they have a place from which to build.

  16. How can anyone give a thumbs down to comments about Al Davis looking dead? You guys need to get you eyes examined.

  17. Al Davis is really Skeletor. Supposedly, Skeletor still rides a motorcycle. Here’s hoping that he gets to close to an 18-wheeler on the expressway. The day that he traded Gruden away for draft picks and cash-essentially trading away a Super Bowl win, was the day he really needed to step down and disappear. Al Davis is motivated by ego (thinks he is smarter than everyone else), and money. Unfortunately the former has cost him the latter. The Oakland Raider franchise is worth much less these days than it used to be due to his poor decision making, and inability to field a quality product. Were I a minority owner-I would file a derivative suit and try to force him out or force him to hire a GM-arguing that he is devaluing my share in the Raiders. Problem is that none of them have the balls to do so, because he is Al Davis.

  18. How can raider fans continue to root for this team while al is in charge? This team is such a dysfunctional organization. I feel sorry for their fans. They deserve better. Someone needs to take this team away from him and put al in a nursing home.

  19. I didn’t watch the news conference, but if that picture is from said news conference, did Tom Cable belt Al in the head on the way out and that is why he has a bandaid on his forehead?

If so, good for him, Cable that is.

  20. Holy crap, Al Davis looks like someone beat the bejesus out of him. Bandage on head covering a gaping wound? Okay Al, time to give it a rest.

  21. Who’s the last head coach that left on good terms with Al Davis? Tom Flores? This will continue to be a completely dysfunctional franchise until Al Davis is either stripped of power or dies. That’s a harsh assessment, but it’s hard not to deny that’s the case.

  22. I’ll defend Al, he’s always been this way.

Does anyone really know why Marcus Allen fell so out of favor with him?
Dumped him in is prime too.
Al found out that Marcus was boinking OJ’s wife when the Raiders were in L.A. Yup, Marcus was living in the guest house before Kato made it so famous……
Al is big on loyalty, probably to a fault…….

  23. My favorite part was when he cut off Samuel L. Jackson’s arms and announced he was reorganizing the Republic into the first galactic empire.

  24. you guys are missing the bigger point here. Every coach after art shell II has signed up knowing full well how crappy they will be treated by Al, they take the job anyway hoping that he will die before they get fired, and then will actually be able to do something with the raiders.

in the meantime, he somehow keeps finding souls to sell to extend his life.

  25. You’d think Hue Jackson would see his future and be a little kinder rather than piling on. He must think his contract will outlive Al, the undead.

  27. This reminds me of when my Grandfather died. He looked healthier at the funeral than Al does now.

  28. When I see Al Davis, I keep thinking at some point he’ll pour himself a jack and coke, start banging on a piano and singing “Great Balls of Fire”.

    Understatement of the decade.

I have nothing against Davis or the Raiders, but I swear to God he looks like an extra from”Night of the Living Dead”! Who’s bright idea was it to trot that guy out in front of the cameras?

And seriously, does he not realize how bad it makes him look to keep trashing former coaches? Al, if they all sucked that bad, maybe you ought to stop PICKING them? It really makes him look petty to badmouth them instead of letting them just move on like other organizations.

And I’m guessing now that Al heldback that 120 grand for the plane fares and rooms he had to shell out for Cable????

  30. I know the Raiders went 8-8, and for them that’s something to be proud of, but I think people are being too hard on Al Davis in this specific instance.

Tom Cable probably broke the jaw of someone on his staff. He was accused of beating multiple women. And the Raiders didn’t fire him, they just didn’t renew his contract. I know those are two sides of the same sword, but there is a difference.

You can say a lot about Al Davis, but I don’t think firing a coach who went 8-8, and was accused of beating his staff is the biggest football crime.

  31. You raider bashes can say whatever you want but deep down inside u want to be a raider fan. You wish your team had a owner who actually cares about the team and not just the money. You dream that your team could have a fan base like the Raiders have….
You have no idea what its like when you run into another raider fan in a bar ect its like a family member even know u have no idea who the guy/girl is it does not matter. You people dont have that and you know it. Thats why you bash the raiders and the media bashes the raiders because most of them are former bad players like tom jackson who hates the raiders cause they beat him up his whole career or chris carter who beged the raiders to sign him late in his career or trent dilfer who laso tried to be a raider.
Richard Seymoure said it best he said every player he has talked to all they”man I wish I could be a raider and put that silver and black on”
So just know this your favorite team whoever crappy team it is all the players on that team WOULD leave your team in a heart beat to be a raider…

Like or loathe Al Davis, comments like this are classless and ridiculous. No one can deny Al Davis loves, and has dedicated his life to the NFL & the Raiders. He is an innovator and an architect of the modern day NFL. I’m sure he has forgotten more about football than you will ever know. Go crawl back under your rock.

  33. Save the text, in 2-3 years we can cut and paste most of it and change the name from Cable to Jackson, not that Hue’s a bad guy but we now have a trend on how coaches are let go in Oakland.

I’m no Raiders fan but watching then in their glory in the 1970’s I’d never dream things would spiral out of control like this.

Please Al, sell the team to someone who has a clue, I miss the old Raiders, they were great for the NFL.

  34. Well that interview make me want to back the owners on this lock out thing.

I mean now I understand that the owners are regular people too.

  35. I’m thinking the old guy from the first Poltergeist movie.

My God this guy is a buffoon! I actually think Tom Cable’s a good man and he’s done well to get out of Oakland and into Seattle. Good luck to him!

  36. Whew! I can smell Al’s rotting corpse from here! Another classy Al Davis carnival. Put a tent on this circus! It’s funny how fired up he gets at these embalming sessions. The funny thing is, Tom Cable’s probably laughing his ass off! The whole Raider Nation stinks like a pair of Al’s pants! Nice.

  37. Al Davis = Skeletor….a young “Skeletor.”

In all seriousness, what a shame. The once great Raiders are now a joke of an organization due to Skeletor.

  38. Old Shool,,,,looks like a spiked Raider fan hugged him!!,,,,and jeez dang millionaire and can’t get a fresh band-aide?

  39. There are no words that accurately sum up my thoughts on this-

Al is taking Dylan Thomas a little too much to heart.

Find some peace; let it go.

  40. @ Moonman & Reality Police

At least as a Raider fan I know what I’m rooting for. Im rooting for an ideology that is entrenched in the organization and not ever-changing with each new GM you hire. We stand for the counter-culture, the man defense, the speed on the outside, the athletes. You have no idea what your team stands for because it changes all the time.

I can stand the losing seasons because i know we are back on the upswing, we have the players, and we now have the right coach, but most of all I know we did it our way. The Raider way. Kiffin & Cable should take responsibility for misrepresenting themselves and trying to go completely against the man who runs the organization.

  41. gotta love all the haters, and thier remarks. One thing abiut Al, he is very seldom wrong when it comes to lawsuits etc…..plus the haters can say what they want, but every off season move for the raiders last year panned out pretty well…free agents like Groves, Wimbley, Campbell, and Henderson, to the draft that yielded starters like McClain, Ford, Veldeer, Houston…..and bringing in Hue Jackson…to me its all good, and have no problem with Al. I do think it might be time to start letting his son run things pretty soon.

    GO RAIDERS!

  42. @ Bucforever: I think we Raider fans, and fans of the NFL in general, can be proud of many of things he did in the past, but I can’t say I’m very happy about a lot of his actions over the past 16 years, that’s for sure.

I pretty much bought the line that the Randy Hansen incident was blown out of proportion, but Al’s comments today, leaves me scratching my head. If what he claims is true, I can understand not taking the option with Cable’s contract, but I’m still not sure I’m sold on it. They players were behind him 100%, and the team was headed in the right direction for the first time in almost a decade. I can only hope Hue can keep the momentum going, or this will be yet another failure in a long line of them dating back to 1994.

  43. @huejackson

And you, like your Raider brethren, wish you could form a coherent sentence.

    Good luck next time.

I’d rather had a team that stood for winning. Not a team that stood for trying to steal money from employees after you fire them.

  45. Cable is a thug. The thugs on the team like him. Break an asst’s jaw in full view of the team? Beat women dumb enough to be caught live alone with him? Just the kind of guy to lead a team whose homie fans in Oakland burned downtown stores & police cars the night the Raiders won a Super Bowl!
Smartest thing ‘ol Al has done is not renew this contract. Next smartest thing would be move the team out of Oakland, so people might not be afraid to come watch live games.

  46. What a total hypocrite. He keeps him on staff knowing all of these things, then bashes him when he fires him a year later trying to make himself out to be a hero. That is one shady guy.

  47. All of you guys making fun of the way a 82 year old looks should take a running leap off a cliff. I bet your granfather look worse….

IT’s obvious AL Davis is not running the team. If you think he is then you are watching Jersey Shore to get your news.

Also if you noticed in his press confrence it looks like he might of had a stroke because is right hand appears to look paralyzed.

  48. Little known facts: Al recently benched 8 reps of 315 pounds without a spotter. Not bad for an old guy.

And Al still runs a sub-6 mile. Again — not too shabby at his age.

Al still has all his own hair and teeth too – no toupees or veneers. That’s all Al.

For his age, the guy is an adonis – like a Greek God.

So cut the man some %@*&^@$# slack.

  49. Al looks bad. I wonder if he’s on the right pills? No I’m not cutting him any slack. He didn’t ask for it and he doesn’t need it. I wonder when he’ll need a wheelchair or will he just keel over? Perhaps, his biography should be titled Night of the Living Davis? Or Al (Zombie) Davis?

So you root for whoever has the best record each year? If you only root for “winning” than i guess you look only at record. So when your team hits its inevitable low point i guess you will jump ship?

The Raiders are a global market, we stand for something that is so powerful that our logo alone can be used in movies, music etc. and people know exactly what it means.

How can you defend Lane Kiffin? The guy has proven time and time again that he is disingenuous. Well guess what, Al Davis is genuine and will not pay people who try to sabotage the organization.

As for Cable, he was simply a bad head coach. Most would have fired him immediately when the BSPN report broke. But Al waited for the facts, gave him another chance, and Cable proceeded to lie to his boss’s face. That usually wont help your chances of an extension.

  51. @skins23 says: Jan 18, 2011 7:20 PM

    ——————————

I watched the video several times and still can’t answer that question!

Wow!!! Has anyone tried to commit this guy yet?! He might as well have brought up that Cable cheated on a high school test to justify it. Fire him in the first weeks of the season? I could understand that. Waiting until the season is over is just evil. If he did things you can’t swallow and don’t want him representing the team, fire him when you learn about it. Otherwise, you just come across caring more about saving money than the values you use to justify it.

Good luck Hue! Let’s hope you don’t sing out of tune with the choir any given Sunday…

What the h** are you talking about?

I never said you should root for a team because they win. I just said I would prefer if a team I rooted for focused on winning and not waging petty battles with every ex-employee they have.

And where did you here me defend Kiffin or Cable? I could care less about those fools.

My only point, and I’m sorry if you couldn’t comprehend it, is that if you want to fire your coach, shut the h** up, fire your coach and move on.

Don’t stage press conferences slamming the coaches you’ve fired, don’t try to weasel out of the contracts you’ve signed with them, and try to comport yourself with a little dignity and professionalism.

Shouldn’t be too much to ask.

  55. “We stand for the counter-culture, …”

I think you forgot “keeping young ‘uns out of our yard” and “a flat earth”.

  56. OMG. Is his forehead actually MOLTING? All he needs is a pair of checkered polyester pants and a van with “free candy” written on the side and he’d be the most disgusting human EVER.

  57. People keep saying Al Davis breaks contracts and steals Money from coaches. Do you guys actually read the wording in his contracts?

The contract basically reads, Al Davis controls everything the head coach and assistant coaches do and that he can fine, fire, or with hold pay with or without cause. Basically anything a coach does that Al Davis does not agree with can be viewed as Breach of Contract and can result in loss of pay. Coaches read this, understand this and they still agree to sign it. Even better is coaches leave organizations like Baltimore (Hue Jackson, Al Saunders and Pagano) to run and sign that very contract.

But, what no one every talks about are all the good things Al Davis and The Raiders do that no other NFL organizations do, such as pay all of their current and former players Medical Costs.

    ===========================

How’d that McNabb deal work out for you? Is THAT still alive?

  59. Tom Cable was a STOP GAP.

He sucked as the Raiders OLINE Coach his 1st year or so. We have up the NFL most sacks.
Then he became head coach and Cordinator. Our Offense was 31st in the NFL in scoring.

Then AL DAVIS is smart enough to hire Hue Jackson and he takes the Raiders from 31st to 6th in the NFL.

Tom Cable goes 6-0 in the AFC West and cant have a winning record against the NFC West. He ends up going 2-8 outside the division forcing the Raiders not to make the playoff.

“If that’s the world you live in,” Davis barked when it was suggested 8-8 was a good finish to the season. …

I agree with AL….Tom Cable had one of the best Offense in the NFL this year and could not win games to opponents who have losing records.

ENUFF SAID….Cable would not be getting the busniess if he didnt make backhand comments “at least they cant call us losers anymore”

  60. Love or hate him, everything he said is factually true, the same was true about the things he said about Lane Kiffin. On a sidenote the game has passed this guy up…time to move on Al, retirement awaits

  61. Who is paying for Al’s medical? If it’s on the state, why do they keep giving him transfusions to keep him alive? Hydroxatone, viagra and depends have to be his best friend. His diaper is a mess and so is his team. Also, what time during the day do they let him leave the home?

  62. Even though Al’s completely senile and out of control, he’s still AWESOME!

It looks like he’s been up for 6 months tweaking on meth.

  63. I just read a post that says Al is 82 years old. That’s bull&$@?! He has to be over 100. Someone tell Hue to start getting his resume out, because by OTA’s Al will be looking for his replacement.

  64. The hate here is crazy.

I dunno if you could tell, but clearly Al loves the Raiders and their success is of huge importance to him. And clearly he’s playing things loose at this point of his life, and doing what he wants. That’s all it is. So what if he’s gone a little flaky. At his age he’s earned the privilege. He’s a human being not a convenient target for all the vitriol one can blindly summon within themselves.

  65. Remember Raider Nation, you follow a man who tried to get money from the Bucs because their logo “diluted the Raiders trademark” Just because Raider Nation is a bunch of habitual losers doesnt make other fans think its ok to try to steal money.

  66. AL takes Aim at Cable..LOL

Give me a break….After AL was done talking about Hue Jackson he told the press he would answer any question they had about Cable. AL answers every single question and you guys have a problem with that?
Did you here about all the legal cost for the Hanson incident? The Domestic voilience incident legal fees? and the issue that occured when Cable would bring his girlfriend on team trips……Cable’s last statment on his way out the door”they cant call us losers anymore” didnt sit well with most, especially a owner than wants to win and put’s money into his team.
Cable is a scum bag just like Big Ben.

  67. Its funny that people automatically take sides against Al before knowing the facts. Al may llook like a zombie on heroin, but the gears are still turning upstairs.

He had every right to fire Cable after the Hanson incident, AND the girlfriend smacking incident. If you remember – the Raiders were dragged into pending lawsuits by both accusers and both incidents were well publicized.

And lets not forget, going 6-0 in the division and 2-6 outside the division is squandering a potentially great team. Tom shouldn’t be proud of this.

Hue Jackson made this team better, not Tom Cable. If Hue wasn’t around, this team woul be 5-11 again. Hue will be a great coach, and Al is still a great owner, so leave the man alone. After all, hes got 3 Lombardis to prove it, what does your owner have?

  75. @pftequalsgreatjournalism

Why don’t you tell me what your favorite team stands for? Im guessing it is nothing nearly as significant as what Al Davis & The Raiders have meant to both Pro Football and society in general.

How do i stand it? No team in the AFC West has been to the superbowl since 2002 and that was us. But most of all i stand it, because I believe in the ideology and philosophy of the team, how it is built, and what it truly represents.

  76. I was all about dogging on Al Davis (because it is funny) all week long. Today I watched the video. Al Davis is not an idiot and I am impressed with what I saw.

So much so I am considering adding the Raiders to my very short list of NFL teams I don’t hate.

  77. DELUSIONAL RAIDER FANS

your team stands for losing. the logo and the name stands for being a laughingstock…and did i mention, losing?

pull your heads out your asses. your team hasnt won a Super Bowl in almost 30 years. none of you that are under 30 have experienced any winning except a few non losing seasons and a Super Bowl loss. how many times have you made the playoffs since your last SB? 8 times in the last 27 years. your team makes the playoffs once every 3-4 years and has nothing to show for it except 1 AFC championship in that time.

so why do Raider fans keep talking about history when their history is terrible since their last Super bowl victory?

and you guys want to talk about pride, committment to excellence, tough, whatever other hyperboles you want to use to make your team sound relevant. give it up, Raiders fans, your franchise is a joke and the fans that act like the Raiders arent currently a joke sound like a bunch of high school drop out idiots. quit slobbing on Davis’ knob for 2 seconds and realize that the mans philosophy, intelligence, and football relevance are obsolete. id feel bad for you guys if you didnt act like idiots but since you do, ill keep laughing.

So true that Cable was a scum bag. He just wasn’t any more so at the end of the season than at the beginning. If that was the real reason Al fired him, he waited a lot longer than any rational person investing millions in something would have waited. What we have left is an owner who hated his coach and didn’t want to pay him for firing him early. Then he used the fact he’s a scum bag to justify his cost-daving decision. It’s just too contrived.

So, Mr. Chico State jorrnalism, are you a 49ers fan, or just ashamed to admit you are a Raiders fan? I’m not clear how you can describe the Raider’s history so badly when half the teams in the league would love to have such history. Ask Texans and Jaguars fans what they’d trade for a 9-7 record, or a playoff berth. Bills fans have gone longer since they got to the Super Bowl, and they never won. For that matter, how ’bout dem Vikings? Sure, none of these teams have the embarrassment of watching their team’s owner dissolve into such mental frailty. Yes, they have really sucked the last several years. Show me a team that hasn’t had down years. If you are so near-sited as to forget what the Raiders have meant to the league, or what Al Davis has done for the NFL, you are a kid with no grip on where the league came from.

I hate the Raiders, and I think Al Davis has become a joke. But I can’t stand for such an ignorant insult to a man who has done so much for the league.

Marc needs to tell us what he stands for and who he supports. I don’t care how good that team is, I bet I could pick them apart.

I am a lifelong Cowgirls fan and we have The Crypt Keeper Jr. as our owner. As Jerrah ages, I expect that he will both look and act more and more like Al…

i see youve taken the time to look me up, lol nice.

first off, we are talking about recent times here, not 30 years ago. the Raiders were once a great franchise, before i was born. they have been pretty crappy since. what have i said that is wrong? Al Davis is the reason why the team was great and hes the reason why they suck now. he has had different coaches, regimes, players, etc. whats the common denominator? him. the Raiders brand is a joke now, ask anybody. its not wrong or right, it just is. im sorry if you cannot grasp current times. his teams suck year in and year out for the majority of the last 20 some odd years and the circus that surrounds the team is even worse. the press conference to introduce Jackson lasted about 90 min. most of that time was Davis speaking badly about the coach he just let go, with the new coach sitting next to him….same thing happened last time…and the time before that…

where does the Raiders franchise stand right now? what is your damn point?

what does it matter what team i support? the subject is Al Davis and the Raiders. im not ashamed of the team i root for, but you can figure that team out for yourself. im a realist, and if my team bad then i call it like i see it.

im not saying anything that is factually wrong and my opinion is just that. you seem to have gotten your panties in a bunch over it, and you say you arent a Raider fan…lol head scratching.

  82. did not know the fabian pick before rodgers! wow thank you al from packer faithful. this guy ruins his team and the league! i can see why he doesn’t have a real coach! why doesn’t madden or howie talk to him.
