Giants’ safeties wish Tom Coughlin would be more like Rex Ryan

Two New York Giants safeties said in a radio interview Monday that they think their team has better players than the other team in town. But the Jets are in the AFC Championship Game while the Giants watch on TV because the Jets have Rex Ryan and the Giants have Tom Coughlin.

“If you match us up against the Jets, do I think they’re a better team? No, I don’t think so at all,” Giants safety Antrel Rolle said on WQAM. “But when it comes to their chemistry, I think their chemistry might be better than ours.”

And who creates that chemistry on the Jets? According to Rolle, it’s Ryan.

“People want to talk about Rex Ryan and this, that and the other, that team is going to war for him,” Rolle said. “They would die for him.”

The Giants’ other starting safety, Kenny Phillips, agreed.

“I would love to play for a guy like Rex,” Phillips told WQAM. “He goes to bat for his players. He’ll take the blame, he allows you to be you. He’s not asking you to hide. If you’re a guy who likes to talk, go out and talk, as long as you back it up. His guys are playing for him and I’d love to be a part of that.”

Phillips was asked, “Who is Tom Coughlin?” He answered, “Honestly I don’t know. Still trying to figure it out. I’m going into my fourth year and I’m still trying to feel him out. He’s a strict guy, sometimes he’s kind of loose. He’s sort of like a general, especially the way he runs his football team.”

Rolle also critiqued Coughlin.

“Honestly, that’s where the problem comes with me, as a coach,” Rolle said. “If he just loosened up just a little bit, run the ship the way you want to run it, run the program the way you want to run it but let us have a little fun, because at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about. . . . I like the coach, I understand what he’s trying to do but he has to understand it’s 2011, man, things have changed.”

But Coughlin, the NFL’s oldest coach, shows no signs of changing.

    Rolle/Phillips:

First of all, don’t criticize your boss… especially to the media. Speak with him privately if you want to change something. This would be like any of us average Joe’s telling the NY Post that our boss isn’t doing a great job. Guess what? We’d probably be fired the next day.

And secondly, the Giants won a Super Bowl without either of you two. Sorry, but Tom Coughlin’s opinion means a heck of a lot more to all of us. Other defensive players seem to flourish in this defense (Osi, Tuck, Webster), so let’s quit making excuses and get back to work.

We haven’t had a losing season since 2004, Rolle/Phillips. Again, Coughlin knows what he’s doing.

So your team, which didn’t make the playoffs, is better than the other team in town that is about to play in the conference championship game. And it’s all because of your good for nothing coach.

I’d give anything to see Coughlin’s face when he first hears about this…

First of all…its about winning and getting paid…fun is secondary.

2nd, why say this when you are still part of the Giants?

3rd, I’m a Jets fan so I love me some Rex Ryan. These guys just don’t seem to bright though.

  4. 0marooney says: Jan 18, 2011 9:33 AM

Wow, I can’t believe these guys publicy said that. Not only that, but they also criticized their head coach! Wouldn’t be surprised to see these guys gone in the offseason.

““If he just loosened up just a little bit, run the ship the way you want to run it, run ”

he did loosen up on that punt return where DeSean Jackson gashed you on Miracle at the Meadowlands two. He’s that way for a reason. From Parcells school…and Parcells coached at Army.

People love to hate on rex. But fact of the matter is i bet 50% or more of the players on every team would love to play for him. Hes a players coach, people can say whatever u want about him but the facts are the players love him and us jet fans love him and he backs all the smack talk so far. He did just get his defense to shut down pretty much two of the best qb’s of all time too. Just sayin.. But keep hating people and making the pointless jokes on here. Cause Ryan is laughing at all it cause thats just what him n the jets want is to be the talk of the town and they definatly are..

  7. berniemadoffsides says: Jan 18, 2011 10:04 AM

    ny82jy – you right gude.

  8. xtb3 says: Jan 18, 2011 10:05 AM

What these 2 said almost the entire team thinks with the exception of Chris Snee, David Diehl and Shaun O’Hara.

This was one of the best teams in thye league and Coughlin could not handle them.

  9. belichickee says: Jan 18, 2011 10:06 AM

Hmmmm, did these players not hear Rex call out his defense after I believe the Miami game in which they gave up maybe 10 points? Those defensive players sure didn’t seem like running through a wall for him then, in fact they seemed quite miffed that Rex was placing the blame squarely on their shoulders.

  10. nps6724 says: Jan 18, 2011 10:13 AM

Coughlin won a Super Bowl as a head coach. Has Ryan?

I don’t care either way about these teams or coaches, but it’s ridiculous for these players to say this in the media. They may have the opportunity to play for Rex or any other coach soon.

  11. jetluv214 says: Jan 18, 2011 10:14 AM

Although antagonists love to down play what Rex is doing in Newyork, which by the way is nothing short of amazing. (Tell me another coach/team that could handle Peyton then confuse Brady the week after- IN THE PLAYOFFS I might add) However you have to admit he sells a product that current players are buying. I remember a post PFT put up several weeks ago that polled players and asked who they would love to play for, and Rex won convincingly. Although these guys were wrong for calling out their coach because at the end of the day it’s up to you to make the plays to win. However its evident that Rex’s style of coaching is infectious and works for todays player. I love it, all free agents are welcome

Dear No Run Support and Bad Angles on Passes

I want you two to play more like Polomalou and Reed but I”m not getting what I want, why should you?

  13. conseannery says: Jan 18, 2011 10:15 AM

Tom Coughlin wishes Giants’ safeties more like Ed Reed

  14. sh3nyg says: Jan 18, 2011 10:31 AM

Oh man, this is not good for us Giants fans.

Keep in mind this griping is coming from a secondary that during the last 3, and most crucial games of the season, gave up pass plays of 33, 36, 38, 64, 65 and 80 yards! So 6 pass plays of 30+ yards in 3 games! Amazing.

Now it’s Coughlin’s fault because he doesn’t let them have fun? Gimme a break.

I ask you Mr. Phillips and Mr. Rolle – Do you think that’s “fun” for Coughlin? Or how much fun is it for us fans watching you guys chase wide receivers to the goal line every weekend? Oh, by the way, us idiots even PAY you to do it. It’s not fun and it’s not funny. Jerks.

  15. bigbluefan1 says: Jan 18, 2011 10:35 AM

    Are you kidding me
Are these guys out of there mind
Do they know if TC goes the Chin is next in line

Fun is what you buy with the money you make doing your job

They call it work for a reason you get paid to do what your boss tells you to do

What do they want a swing set in the parking lot
    Give me a break
The Giants have a history of being one of the best run teams in the game and one with class
Welington Mara would come back from the grave if they ever started acting like the jets

  16. gcsuk says: Jan 18, 2011 10:49 AM

Maybe it will come out that Tom Coughlin and his wife like to make Granny “fetish” videos and post them on public websites.

Then Rolle and Phillips can be happy that TC is more like Rex Ryan.

    ======================================

Yer the Giants won a superbowl recently with this nice old man. When was the last time the Jets won a superbowl?

  20. catfish252 says: Jan 18, 2011 11:07 AM

    Dear Tom:

Please don’t change a thing, well now that I’m thinking about it there are 2 things you ought to change, Rolle and Phillips.

  21. gcsuk says: Jan 18, 2011 11:10 AM

    @crunchyclam
I wouldn’t say that a team that went 10-6, and has made the playoffs (including a SB win) 5 of the last 7 years is horrible.

Have the last 2 years been disappointing? Sure, after excellent starts. But to classify a team as horrible, you can start looking at teams like Cincy, Oakland, and Buffalo first. It would take a while till you got to the Giants.

  22. david7590 says: Jan 18, 2011 11:18 AM

“The Giants have a history of being one of the best run teams in the game and one with class”

Yeah if you call pelting your opponents players and staffs with ice chunks from the stands “classy”. Giant fans are only a step above the Philly trash.

  23. bigkatt says: Jan 18, 2011 11:36 AM

Two players with loads of talent but they need to learn when and how to address an issue like this. They do make a few valid points, but discussing them with the media is not the way to deliver the message. Rolle made a lot of big plays this year but he also gave up his fair share as well as being very outspoken often against the coaches. Phillips still needs to really prove himself before he can call out a Superbowl champion coach. This is not what the Giants need right now considering many of them think they should still be playing.

  24. clavette says: Jan 18, 2011 11:44 AM

while i agree they shouldnt be saying this to the media, they are however both correct.

coughlin is absolutely terrible. he did not win the giants a super bowl. if you think he did you’re a moron.

the giants wont he 07 super bowl because of STEVE SPAGNUOLO

spags confused brady with his schemes the same way that rex did on sunday. NOT TOM COUGHLIN

  25. ny82jy says: Jan 18, 2011 11:46 AM

Rolle is nowhere good enough to talk the crap that he does. I mean really..

  26. clavette says: Jan 18, 2011 11:47 AM

Wow, I can’t believe these guys publicy said that. Not only that, but they also criticized their head coach! Wouldn’t be surprised to see these guys gone in the offseason.

these two are the reason the giants looked so much better than last season. yea still same result but a huge defensive difference

  27. carryingweight says: Jan 18, 2011 11:51 AM

Compare what the jets did on Sunday to what the giants did to an defeated patriots team on 07. Sorry but unless sexy rexy gets all the way to the superbowl and then wins these guys will be eating some crow.

  28. ninjapleazee says: Jan 18, 2011 11:59 AM

suspend them for 4 games without pay then bench them.. why not, Reid did it to Terrell Owens why not these two clowns.

  29. arnoldziffel says: Jan 18, 2011 12:03 PM

    How interesting …

And I’ll bet the Coughlin wishes his boys were a little more like the Jets’ Revis.

And yes … it’s 2011. But so what? It’s still Old School when that big fat paycheck winds up in your mailbox every week.

Just strap on your helmets and go out and make tackles, you whining Clowns.

  30. ny82jy says: Jan 18, 2011 12:10 PM

Yea Antrell. You guys have better players and a better team. Thats why you havent made the playoffs in two years and the jets have been to the AFC Champ game two yrs in a row. Guy is a idiot. Have listened to him all year make stupid comments.

  31. n0hopeleft says: Jan 18, 2011 5:42 PM

Antrell – you were outplayed by 33yr old Deon Grant. Don’t make me bring up your salary compared to his.

Every Monday I have to listen to this tart on the radio in NJ… STFU, buckle up, and swell up – stop blaming chemistry on you blowing coverage.

  32. njmarineman says: Jan 18, 2011 5:46 PM

The Jets luck will run out soon. You watch, all this talk will be a distant memory soon. Even if the Jets get by the Steelers, they stand no chance against the Packers who have a real quarterback and a defense that is constistent with stopping the run and short passes.

  33. njmarineman says: Jan 18, 2011 5:47 PM

Yes, the Packers will beat the Bears this weekend.

  34. bluefan204 says: Jan 18, 2011 6:44 PM

As soon as Rex starts losing, you’ll hear a whole different tune. Things are good now. They won’t stay good forever

  35. patfic15 says: Jan 18, 2011 7:27 PM

Typical responses from todays players……once the Jets start losing (which they will), opinions will change. Rex Ryan is just a more talented Wade Phillips…

  36. kev86 says: Jan 19, 2011 8:16 AM

Kenny P. looked like he was trying to “have fun” when tackling Brent Celek which led to a 65 yd. TD to a TE. Biggest play of the collapse game if you ask me. He had an “ok” year and should listen to his coaches and STFU if he wants to be something special.

Thats two strikes against Rolle in my book with his loud mouth. One more and I say trade him to Buffalo and tell him to have a blast.
