This week, it’s not personal for Rex Ryan

Bill Belichick, Rex Ryan AP

Jets coach Rex Ryan can’t pretend he has some “personal” mountain to climb this week, like he did against the Colts and Patriots.  He likes Steelers coach Mike Tomlin too much.

Ryan called Tomlin a “man’s man” and one of his favorite coaches.   He relayed a story from 2007 when Tomlin had mercy on Ryan’s Ravens team and ran the ball nearly the entire second half with a huge lead.

While last week’s game was personal, Ryan continued to express his admiration for Bill Belichick after the win over the Patriots.

“There was nothing schematically I did to win that game,” Ryan said. “Our guys were prepared to play and that’s my job. But to say that I out-coached Belichick, I would not agree with that. I think it’s almost a joke. I don’t think anybody out-coaches Belichick.”

From most coaches, this would sound like false modesty.  (Especially after the amazing gameplan Ryan put together on Sunday.)  But Ryan says it in such a way that you believe he means it.

Comcast’s Tom Curran joined Florio on Monday’s PFT Live and talked about the mutual admiration Ryan and Belichick share.

Actually, Bill Belichick usually out coaches Bill Belichick by running trick plays when he should just play football, or by poor clock management.

Rex had a good game plan, though, and his players executed it perfectly.

Uh oh. It was personal against Manning & they won. It was personal against Belichick & they won. Do we see a pattern here? If they want to make it to the SB, it’d better be personal against the Steelers…

Why wouldn’t it be personal against the Steelers? They beat Rex in Bmore a lot more than the Colts or Patriots did!

But hey, nice to see a little humility from the guy.

The Patriots were one of the softest 1-seeds in NFL history. That’s why you saw the Jets talking smack all week, they knew they were the tougher team by a LONG shot. No point in pissing off a team who can as physical as you, hence the different tactics this week.

    Steelers have class.

    And, 6 rings:)

Rex better hope his guys don’t need extra motivation – the problem is that they acted like they won the Super Bowl last week against a vastly overrated Patriot team.

What? No bashing of the Steelers from the king of bashing? I’m SO disappointed!! There’s nothing like some good ‘ol Steeler bashing!!

  10. patssmelllikepoo says: Jan 18, 2011 11:30 AM

If the Pats were overrated what are the Steelers? Just asking.

The jets have all the motivation they need this week. They are playing for the superbowl!!! What more do you need? They have guys like LT and JT who have played their whole careers to get to this point. Its funny how everyone hates the jets when they talk and when they dont people get upset. lmfao really.. Keep hating haters!!

Amazing really. So now the pats were overrated at 14-2.. You were probably on here last week saying the jets would get killed like everyone else. Pats were anything but overrated they destroyed almost every top team during the reg season. Your a clown bro and you sound really ignorant making dumb comments like that. Keep hating n giving no credit

Like Cowherd said today on the radio, you don’t talk trash to pit bulls. The Steelers will just punch the JETS in the mouth regardless, so Rex and co. may as well do the smart thing and not piss them off before the beating is applied.

@andyprough: Those “vastly overrated” Patriots moved through a tough Steelers defense in Week 10 faster than Grant took Richmond. That contest ended in a convincing New England win, with the Patriots hanging 39 points on Pittsburgh.

How many coaches have you guys seen belichik hug after losing a game. Look at the respect he showed ryan. All the ryan haters just dont get it you really dont. He has the respect from the players and coaches on other teams. Just not from the ignorant fans who half of them are jealous cause the coach of their team is a putz!!

LOL. Yea, the softest 1 seed in history who only wnt 6-1 against Playoff teams and blew out 3 of the final four teams still playing…

Beat the Steelers on the road 39-26, beat the Jets 45-3, and Chicago on the road 36-7…

They just played poorly on Sunday bro. You don’t go 14-2 by accident.

I dont like the jets or steelers but I would like to make what I think is two reasons why rex is slobbing off tomlin: 1. The ravens tried trash talking the steelers and the steelers responding by being the more physical team. 2. The steelers are WAY tougher than the jets I mean top to bottom the steelers have a wr tougher than any db on the jets ryan just did all that trash talking to the pats because lets face it the pats d is no steelers d the jets did an outstanding job against the pats but I have a hard time thinking they will do that to the steelers troy polamalu will be the difference he didnt play the first time these teams played and just so everyone knows I also am not a pats fan so im not saying this because im bitter or something im a buccaneers fan and its just my oppinion

@NE fans who keep harping on how bad the Patriots beat the Steelers this season … You are right. The Pats hammered the Steelers. However, you also say that the Patriots played a “bad game” against the Jets. I guess it isn’t possible that the Steelers may have just played “a bad game” when they played NE????

I’ve said before and I will say it again – there is no dominant team in this league this year. Pete Rozzelle is smiling somewhere at all the parity. Any one of these four teams can win it all depending on who gets hot.

You Pats fans like to keep harping on how you beat the Steelers, but the Browns annihilated you!! And the Steelers blitzed them. This league is an “Any Given Sunday.” Last Sunday wasn’t yours. If you played the Jets this week, you may beat them. The days of dynasties are over. There is so much player movemet and nobody can lock up a multitude of players for 6-8 years.

If the Steelers can do it this year, that would be three in six years and that would truly be amazing in this era.

Coach Ryan has his hands full this week. Not only does he have to worry about the Steelers as a team, but he has to figure out a gameplan to keep Big-Ben away from his wife’s feet…

Is that the same Cowherd that said the Pats would roll the Jets? My uncle frank says the jets are like bulls, you don’t try to get on top of them they will just buck you off. I mean really!!

    @kate773,
The guy is really a Jets fan and just messing with you Pats fans.

I’m a Steelers fan and love the way Ryan coaches. Taking nothing from Tomlin, but If Ryan coached the Steelers, I think it would be hard for anyone to beat them. The Jets are turning into the Steelers in green and white.

@wtf2812: Hey sport, nice post. My own was simply in response to “andyprough’s” statement that the Patriots are “vastly overrated,” which necessarily implies that the Patriots are not a good team. I think most sensible, objective NFL fans recognize that New England is good.

This Patriots fan—nor, to my knowledge, any member of the New England Patriots—never said that the Pats were unbeatable. That question, or fiction, was started by the sports media to generate controversy instead of legitimate debate, as the answer is clear. (In the modern era, perhaps the 2007 Patriots came within an Assante Samuel-dropped interception from being considered “unbeatable.”)

I think it’s more accurate to say that the Pats were “made to play a bad game” against the Jets. In truth, Rex Ryan simply outcoached Bill Belichick and quarterbacks coach (and de facto offensive coordinator) Bill O’Brien with defensive schemes—based, in part, on past Patriots playoff losses—and multiple looks, dropping into coverage, and blitzing Brady—at least more than Manning.

I will be rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game. In my opinion, if “Big Ben” eventually gets his third ring, then that would make him only the third “elite”—my definition is very narrow—quarterback in the NFL, along with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Since three’s a crowd, I’ll be rooting for the NFC Champion in the Super Bowl. Ciao.

Spot on, and I’m a Pats fan. I noticed it in earlier meetings too. There’s definitely mutual respect there.
And Rex is wrong…he definitely outcoached BB.
Yes his players outexecuted the Pats also, but the scheme was all him and his staff.
