Now we know why there have been no substantive talks between the Eagles and quarterback Mike Vick on a new long-term deal.

Though nothing prevents them from talking, multiple league sources tell us that the Eagles can’t sign Vick to a new contract under the current labor agreement.

The details regarding the provisions that prevent a new deal between Vick and the Eagles aren’t completely clear. But the bottom line is that, until March 4, the Eagles can only apply the franchise tag to Vick. No contract may be signed for 2011 and beyond.

The Eagles aren’t saying whether they’ll use the franchise tag on Vick.

As of March 4, Vick’s status will depend on the maneuverings of the NFL and the union. There could be a lockout. There could be decertification by the union, which would potentially block a lockout. The league could declare an impasse and impose the terms of its last offer. Or the league could allow the current system to continue, something that NFL outside labor counsel Bob Batterman made clear in a Wednesday interview with PFT Live won’t be happening.
