Ten more highlights from the epic Al Davis press conference

We need more Al Davis press conferences in our lives.   For all the jokes made at his expense lately, he’s one of the 5-10 most important figures in American professional football history.  He doesn’t speak often, but he’s absolutely fascinating when he does.

We’ve already gone over some of his scathing words about Tom Cable and Hue Jackson’s promise to win the AFC West, but there was too much fun stuff otherwise to ignore.

Here’s a sample, with a big assist to Jerry McDonald at the Oakland Tribune and David White of the San Francisco Chronicle:

1. Davis on beating Lane Kiffin in arbitration: “I beat him because he lied. He’s a liar.”   (Davis called him “Lance” Kiffin at one point.  He also called Cam Newton “Kim” Newton.)

2. Davis said Cable would have been fired after the season even if the team made he playoffs because of his off-field problems.  The Raiders owner crushed Cable for saying “We’re not losers anymore.”  It was pretty obvious Davis saw Jackson as a potential head coach the moment they hired him.

3.  A reporter asked Davis about the efficacy of the team’s background checks considering Kiffin and Cable’s history:  “We’re very bad at it,” Davis said.   Awesome.

4. In an upset, the line of the day went to Jackson: “What Tom Cable is as a football coach is an exceptional line coach.” (Ouch.)

5. Davis on JaMarcus Russell:  “JaMarcus is gone. I decided we no longer as an organization to fight the battle of personal problems with certain players. . . . JaMarcus hurt. Any time you lose a first-round draft choice it hurts. But it’s over.”

6. Tom Cable’s old zone blocking scheme is gone.   Davis hinted that Jackson faced “resistance” on some offensive changes in 2010.

7.  Jackson cited Jon Gruden as one of his biggest influences:  “He was like, what’s his name? Gruden,” Davis said.   “Gruden was like that — feisty, he could lead the defense. But they are different, definitely, Hue Jackson and Jon Gruden.”

8.  Davis wasn’t too worried about the support for Tom Cable in the locker room and found punter Shane Lechler’s comments amusing.  He noted Lechler once said he was leaving town just before signing a huge deal to stay in Oakland.

9.  On Nnamdi Asomugha: Davis wants to keep him, but indicated he wouldn’t have picked up the option in the cornerback’s contract: “That 17 million dollars can bring you two or three players that can help you win.’’

10. Davis said he hired a front office member to help him more than a year ago that has already left.  “One worked here about eight months and you people didn’t even know he was working here,” Davis said.

  1. As much as I questions Al’s actions and decisions I will still miss having him around for the entertainment value. We comes out with his walker and bandaged head and says whatever pops into his head!! I love it!! I stayed at work an extra hour just watch.

I always scratch my head (no pun intended) about his decisions until he comes out and makes sense of it all. I really wish he would talk more during the season. I feel like he kinda took some of the attention away from Hue’s big day. Hell, Hue’s kids were sitting there while Al talked about Cable smacking broads around and bringing them on road trips.

Long story short, Al is crazy and kookie, even a little spookie, but he is still the crazy old grandpa of the Raider family!!!

  2. I’ve been a Raider fan all my life. I even traveled to Canton when Al Davis was inducted into the HOF. But over the past few years, Al has become solely and completely focused on exerting his control over the organization rather than winning football games. I hate what he has, and continues to do to the organization. He embarrasses the team and himself. The Raiders will never win while he’s alive. He has become a rotten vindictive person. Every breath he takes is a waste of oxygen. Thanks Al for taking away the enjoyment of watching and following Raider football.

  3. the press conference was tantalizing. i have 3 girls who don’t watch football, they called me in to watch the presser, it was that good.

i love the pic attached to the article.

  4. Al looks more like Smeagol every year. What’s with the band-aid by the eye? Did Cable take the firing badly or is he just copying Nelly?

  5. He is classic!! Someone get this guy a reality show. If you have time watch the whole press conference, you won’t be disappointed!

  6. So what exactly here is wrong what Coach Davis said? Wheres the crazy stuff you guys like to come up with that he said?

He Spoke the truth about everything.
So because he does not lie and Gives the media all the answers they asked for he is crazy?
You can say whatever you want but Coach is the only owner who actually cares about the team more than the money.
The Media always trys to paint a picture of Coach like he is out of his mind but its not true.
He is football he schools the media everytim e they test him.
He knows more football than this loser writer that nobody even knows. Whats this guys name Roethlisal? I never heard of him, I never seen him on Tv. He is a 40-50 year old wanabe sports writer but he has a failed career. You have no right to talk crap about Mr Davis. The only thing I know about this writer is my sources told me his wife cheated on him with a black guy last year

  7. Wow, he totally looks like guy from the Saw movies. Especially when the guy from the Saw movies was on his death bed.

  8. I thought the Crypt Keeper was being pictured… his grandkids probably crap themselves everytime they visit.

  9. Oh wow, Al Davis is trying to get out of paying an ex head coach..never seen him do that before. What a snake.
He instantly starts ripping on his head coaches once they are gone and bashing them in order to get out of paying them what they are owed.
    Criminal
    Repeat offender.

  10. Someone should have asked him about the Immaculate Reception (not that we’re near an anniversary or anything) just to get his heart moving again. In some ways, Al may be bad for the Raiders but he is a little reminisent of some of the old time owners who often took too much interest in running their team but genuinely loved the game.

  11. I wonder where the character Mr. Burns on The Simpsons came from??? When you look at the picture of AD on this article can’t ya just picture him screaming…SMITHERS!!

  12. What I want to know is, when you’re interviewing for a job with him, how in the world do you keep a straight face? I’d have to snicker, so I guess you’d have to look ‘through him’?

    Butt Ugly!

  13. Work hard, new Raiders coach, and someday you could be the guy your boss vaguely recalls the existence of.

  14. @huejackson,

    Sir,

I must admit that I am easily amused by any attack on Rosewood. Having said that, your post is one of the funniest things I have read here in 3 years.

    Thanks so much!

  15. It’s disgusting the way fans will accept anything from this vile person.

    Faider fans are souless morons.

  16. This man is on his death bed and mediots still badmouth and harass him. How about showing a thread of respect for one of the pioneers of this great league. I’m amazed at how little class some people have. Especially the media.

  17. How about the next time they need to interview Al they just hire a medium? This face to face stuff is too graphic.

  18. I want to see the Al Davis story staring Christopher Walken. Cable had some personal problems with an ex spouse. It wasn’t good.

  19. I love those few Raider fans that are hanging onto the idea that Al Davis is a genius who has this master plan that we just can’t see.

I’m a 49er fan, and I really hope the Raiders can win another Super Bowl in Al’s lifetime. It appears those two things are mutually exclusive, but it would be nice to see.

  20. Skeletor looks like he has either leprosy or skin cancer. Now that he has hired a coach, his next order of business should be to send Amy Trask and John Herrera out for some leaches to put on his head.

  21. Is it just me or does Al Davis bear an uncanny resemblance to Gold Member’s much older brother…Silver Member.

Somewhere I think he has a fancy case filled with a peeled skin collection.

  22. Say what you want to say about Al Davis (zombie, lost his mind, control freak, etc.), if there is one thing that always comes across whenever he does speak is that the man genuinely loves his team unlike other owners who treat their clubs as business properties.

  23. 3. A reporter asked Davis about the efficacy of the team’s background checks considering Kiffin and Cable’s history: “We’re very bad at it,” Davis said. Awesome.

    ————————————————–

That one cracked me up. At least he’s not delusional about some things.

    ————————————————–
@kegpack…Sorry “class” is something that Raider Haters/Media types DO NOT have when it comes to Al Davis.

Al Davis IS the Raiders and I find it sad that fans of other NFL teams feel they need to take the time to post stupid comments about someone who has given his ENTIRE life to football.

Is Al Davis “perfect”…Heck no, but in his life he has accomplished more for the NFL than anyone working for PFT or the people who feel the need to take time out of their day to trash the way he looks.

BTW Mr. Rosenthall…I thought PFT was going to make sure “only constructive posts” would be posted…I can see after reading the postings from this article that isn’t true (at least for the Raider articles).

Attention all Haters…Grow up…Attack the man/organization for the direction of the franchise the last eight years (there is A LOT to discuss for sure), BUT don’t make fun of the way he looks now.

  25. The caption under that picture should be..” You see the Birds came swooping in and pecked at my eyeballs. There must have been hundreds of them..”

  26. “Davis said he hired a front office member to help him more than a year ago that has already left. “One worked here about eight months and you people didn’t even know he was working here,” Davis said.”
    ************************************************
Here’s a great example of what the media knows about the Raiders.

    Absolutely nothing.

  27. i only make fun of him because his passion has killed the Raiders. his ability as an owner has gone from a strength to a big time weakness. i dont want him to die because i like to see the Raiders suck.

    “just suck, baby”

  28. also, they are not going to continue with the zone blocking run scheme…that would piss me off if i liked Oakland. the run game was the strongest part of the team. if it aint broke dont fix it…..the Raider philosophy “if you dont win the SB every year, its broken.”

and thats part of the reason why the team is now a laughing stock.

  29. The man is 81, has had numerous health problems and we have the peanut gallery in here making jokes about his appearance. Unreal. As has been said, you can question some of the decisions he’s made the past few years, but there isn’t another owner in this league that wants to win and does everything he can to achieve it as much as Al Davis. The guy doesn’t give a crap about making money. His sole desire is to see the Raiders win. Some of you need to give your heads a shake and learn from that.

  30. The picture is scary as hell. Al need to rehire the PR department. No way they would allow him to go to that press conference with a bloody bandage for the whole world to see. He could have at least put on a beanie to cover his head. He looked like Cable got the last word in on his way out the door.

  31. It’s so easy for a casual fan to poke fun at Al Davis since he has aged and has made some questionable decisions. If you are truly a fan of football and the NFL, you should take 5-10 minutes to read about some of the things Al Davis has done for the league. Once you’ve done that, if you still feel like posting jokes about this man’s health and sanity you are free to do so, but at least know that without his influences the league and the game would probably not be what it is today. I’m all for reading and posting for entertainment, but I just feel like the majority of the public is doing a lot of bashing without knowing anything the man himself.

  32. @raiderfans

Al took over the raiders by basically amending his original contract while the majority owner was out of teh country, forcing him out by basically a corporate takeover.

Then he sued the NFL over Los Angeles
    Then he sued Oakland
Then he sued that the Bucs and Panthers team colors and/or logos diluted the raiders trademark.

The irony is nobody has diluted the Raiders trademark over the last decade then Al Davis himself. Long live Mr Burns!!! The longer the Raiders bask in futility the better!!!! Hows the view from down there?

    Just Win…..Maybe

  33. Gregg Rosenthal what does your father look like? is he still alive? if he is i bet he looks like Homer….. so from now on your name is Bart….

PFT is becoming a rag…..nice job.

  34. Please, Mike, for the love of God, TAKE THAT PICTURE DOWN!!!!!!

You’re scaring the crap out of half your audience, and the other half is wondering why you’re promoting “Revenge of the Living Dead”!!!

  35. BTW, is it me, or is one of his eyes twice the size of the other?????

Dude gives me the Heebee Geebees looking at him!

That would be a great posting other than the fact the Raiders already started moving away from the zone blocking scheme when Hue Jackson arrived.

BTW…ZBS did nothing for the two previous years away if you look at the 2008-2009 records.

But thanks for your “expert” opinions all the same…I sure the guy that won three Super Bowls will value your input.

  37. @ marcsasharc:

In case you havent noticed, the Raiders are rising.. Looks like you’re gonna be disappointed over the next few years..

Who’s YOUR team? Must be a team whose ass the Raiders have kicked in the past for you to be such douche…

  38. To those of you who keep blasting him because he looks bad because he’s old, don’t you have grandparents?

You are incredibly disrespectful people. Your parents must be proud of the human beings you’ve become.

  39. I feel bad for Raider fans. There will be no turn around until Al Davis is gone, not necessarily dead and buried, but at removed from football decisions for the team.

For his next press conference, he should get some of those paper bags with eye holes from the former Aint’s fans. Man, that mug is hard to look at.

  40. It must be easy to pass judgement on a 81 yr old, but what did he say that gave any indication that he is senile? Every statement he made if it came from a 50 yr old Al Davis, nobody would say anything. He has a right to speak on his team, and has accomplished more by age 45 then you Rosenthal and all these clowns posting comments have your whole life combined. What he said about Kiffin, Russel, and Cable was all true. Take his keys??? Child please!

  41. You Raiders fans are freaking cry babies. That old man looks horrible. He has contributed absolutely nothing to the NFL or society at-large which changes the fact that he should never appear in public again. Never, ever. Acknowledging this obvious fact doesn’t make the rest of us a-holes, it makes you all delusional sycophants.

The more you cry, the less you’ll piss.

The Raiders and the AFL were going to fold until Davis came along bud. He not only Coached them, he became the Commissioner of the AFL, and was the biggest reason the two leagues merged. If he wouldn’t have taken ownership of the Raiders – with the partners blessings I might add – The Raiders wouldn’t exist right now because they were on the verge of folding.

He sued the NFL and usually won, because he was right. He had the balls to actually take on the old boys club and usually won.

He took the Raiders from a fledgling AFL after thought, to one of the most revered franchises in professional sports. This crap being posted about his appearance and mental capabilities is juvenile garbage. Most of the posters on here probably don’t have a clue about any NFL history or that the Raiders have won multiple SB’s under this “senile old man.” You are not only classless, you are naive and ignorant. That’s not a good way to go through life kids.

  43. marcsasharc:

You continue to post as if you know something, anything, about football, but continually prove you know nothing at all.

    What’s up with you?

  44. I love some of these Raider fans who are getting upset over what they consider cheapshots at their senile, idiot owner. Maybe if Davis didn’t hold press conferences ripping fired head coaches, he wouldn’t invite these types of comments. Tough Raider fans! Your beloved owner should be allowed to rip coaches and refuse to pay them, but please don’t make fun of him!

  45. I’ve been making fun of the way Al Davis looks all week. today I listened to the press conference for the first time. Al Davis is not as senile as PFT lets on.

He is definitely not conventional. But he’s far from senile.

  47. Ya Al, we had no idea you had someone else working in the front office, when almost everyone of “your” draft picks last year made sense. After a year of taking multiple people 3 or more rounds early. DHB followed by Mike Mitchell… Keep living in la-la land Undead Al.
