Time to take the keys from Al Davis

tomcable

The Tuesday press conference conducted by Raiders owner Al Davis created a major stir, for a variety of reasons.

We’ve posted a couple of items about what he said, but it’s time to address whether he should be saying anything at this point during a press conference of any kind, especially if he’s going to use that platform as an opportunity to air grievances like it’s Festivus.

Our main point, for those of you who can’t or don’t want to watch the video, is that it’s time for someone to say to Davis what many of us have had to say to aging parents and grandparents when it comes to driving their car, at least as it relates to his ability to be the person to conduct a press conference.

As explained in the video, he can still run the show.  But based on his two most recent press conferences (and specifically his most recent one), he shouldn’t be conducting the press conferences.

I thought the same thing when I saw a clip of the press conference. I even posted on my FB, “Wow! Al Davis looks like crap.”

Who can take the keys? He has like 65% control. Would/could the league do it?

  6. coreydavidschmitz says: Jan 19, 2011 1:59 PM

If I was a Raiders fan I would definitely want that to happen. But this guy has spent hundreds of millions of dollars of his own money to own and run this team. So why the hell does it matter? Let’s not forget what kind of guy Tom Cable seems to be. It’s not a crazy decision to have fired him. And it’s not Davis’s fault he looks like the Cryptkeeper.

maybe it more likewe should take the key board away from you, because its just like we tell our little immature children when all they do is spread lies, and rumours, and hatred about a certain team/individual.

    GO RAIDERS!

he really looks bad, almost to where he looks like he has some sort of very fast moving sickness.with his band aids on his head,he looks like he may have fallen too.does he have kids?somebody he respects or love, maybe john madden, needs to step in and talk to him and tell him he is just hurting the team by being the way he has been the last 10 years.davis did a lot for the nfl,i wish he would find a way to bow out gracefully before he tarnishes his legacy.

  10. cav2ya says: Jan 19, 2011 2:04 PM

Instead of taking away, maybe someone should give him a MIRROR.
dude look like a Kevorkian test subject.
that said, in football, who cares what anyone looks like. except Troy Palamalou.
As long as his team does good… But he has made a mockery of his team and the fans. Seriously. Maybe Raiders fans should stop going to games and stop buying merchandise. Easy enough right..

The Fact that Tom Cable assaulted other coaches, assaulted women, and sucked as a head coach and oline coach is why he got canned.

IF his name was Ben and played for the steelers then he would be rewared with the keys to the city and some young girl he could assault without anyone saying anything.

  12. kosarsmyidol says: Jan 19, 2011 2:23 PM

It’s obvious that the man has some serious physical (and likely mental) problems. I think that it’s classless to make fun of an old man who has fallen on hard times at the end of a storied NFL career (cue the Favre jokes). I hope that Al Davis can find a way to step down gracefully and hire a GM.

Its Al Davis’ team and it has been for decades…Say what you will but they are getting better, with a talented roster, good 2010 draft class and a great bright offensive minded head coach.

Why don’t you judge them going forward?

Wow, there are Raiders fans who can afford to live in Encinitas? This is more shocking than the above story about Al Davis.

No, but seriously, get out of San Diego before I find and hurt you.

  17. tombrookshire says: Jan 19, 2011 2:39 PM

Gosh, this guy looks like the wreck of the Hesperus! He is so scary looking you have to turn away. Why did he come out in public looking like that, let alone conduct a global press conference? Judgment and self-awareness seemingly are some of the first things to say adios.

  18. raiderredleg says: Jan 19, 2011 2:41 PM

You have the gall to say Al Davis should “watch what he says” after you launched a personal attack on Aaron Rodgers that turned out to 100% WRONG?

Exactly. Most of the snot nosed kids that reply here haven’t spent enough time watching people age. Laugh now, but you won’t be laughing when it’s your parents and you’re wiping their noses instead of them wiping yours.

I haven’t liked Davis ever since he screwed Wayne Valley out of Raider team ownership. But, I am a Raiders fan and have been since the teams formation. Al’s time has come and gone. Unfortunately peoples ego’s usually outlive their mental usefulness.

  22. buccaboo says: Jan 19, 2011 3:00 PM

Just because he looks so bad and he says stupid things, does not mean you (or anyone) has the right to take away his business.

This is probably all he has. Unfortunately, he affects a lot of people by his actions.

  23. buccaboo says: Jan 19, 2011 3:06 PM

Furthermore: He comes from an era when you could speak your mind and not have to worry about lawsuits and political correctness.

*If* Cable did what Davis said Cable did, then he should have been fired. Davis certainly didn’t need to justify it publicly though, unless he felt it necessary to defend his decision.

With todays media outlets being what they are, he either had to spill his guts or risk being called out for firing a successful (sort of) coach.

  24. ratbastardshanahandjob says: Jan 19, 2011 3:10 PM

There is one press conference Al should conduct. The one where he turns in his resignation as GM/head of player personell/head of scouting/part time DC effective immediately……

Al cant run things. Unless you consider a quarter century of failure something you want (25 years 7 winning seasons/6 playoff seasons)…..

“JaMarcus is a great playaaa. Get ovah it”. Or drafting dhBUST and still thinking he reminds Al of Randy Moss in his prime. Those 2 things are proof enough Al needs to go. There are hundreds of others I can list if someone needs them….

The sands in H. Jacksons 2 year (hour) glass to termination are already starting to fall. Jackson wont succeed with that anchor known as “Coach” Davis around his neck……

  25. armchairgm9 says: Jan 19, 2011 3:11 PM

Why is the guy in the coffin from Tales from the Crypt speaking at a Raiders press conference?

  26. raiders4life says: Jan 19, 2011 3:19 PM

Isn’t there anything the NFL can do, short of hiring a hitman, to remove Al Davis from running (into a wall) an NFL franchise. He’s lost almost all respect around the NFL, his employees and especially the Raider Nation fanbase the way his conducted himself in these idiotic press conference and the way he has poorly run the Raiders. I’ve always been a Raider fan, as my name states, but man it ain’t easy with this pathetic excuse for an owner.

  27. raidermerv972 says: Jan 19, 2011 3:24 PM

I really think Al Davis knows his limitations and is one of the reasons why he hasn’t addressed the media in 16 months. I dont think its up to anyone to decide what is his fate or if he should throw in the keys. Al Davis has been good for football and still is. Heck, I dont like him much as a person either but give the man credit for standing up to the likes of Lame Kiffin or Tom (curly) Cable. Say what you want about old Al ( I know I have) but the man is no chump.
It’s HIS money, His team, so stop the hate! He cant live to be 200 can he?

  28. snnyjcbs says: Jan 19, 2011 3:34 PM

I have to laugh at how so many really young UGLY people get a kick at knocking the way an 80 sum year old man looks and seem to need to find the most unflattering picture they can to post.

Take a good look people, it is all coming your way and much sooner then you think. Only difference is that most of you will be in a Wheelchair with dribble running down your chins as you mouth the words Mama, Mama.

This dude at his age is sharper at his age then you clowns are in your youth. Run from it all you like but you all already have one foot in the Grave Baby, it is coming and coming faster then you think lol.

  29. badmude says: Jan 19, 2011 3:35 PM

I am a Raider Fan, and I admit AD is showing his age and is probably having some health issues. But for the media to blast him shows no class.
Mr. Davis wouldn’t have to do these press conferences if the media (including this site) would report the stories acurately and un-biased. Example would be the Cable fine, was reported caused by OTA’s. WRONG! It was Cable’s legal battles he caused.
Feel free to make fun of the other NFL teams who haven’t made it to the Superbowl since 2002. Dallas, Cinci, Detroit, Miami, or the rest of the AFC west. just to name a few.

  30. r8rrealist says: Jan 19, 2011 3:36 PM

i still can’t believe there are so many al davis loyalists out there. i love the raiders and know there are haters lining up to takes shots at the organization, any chance they get, but wake up! davis looks like a mess and rants and raves like you would expect an 81 year old man to. only problem is that most 81 year old men are tucked away in a home fielding questions about the old days from their grandchildren, not running an NFL franchise.

there is still a lot of football knowledge in this guy, it shows up in the press conferences, but there is also something that i notice when he takes the podium. there are periods of clear thought and many others in which he seems to be grasping at the past for answers to current questions. instead of coming up with answers he tries to discredit the questions by ripping on sam bradford and insisting that the pats would have won last week had they not sent randy moss packing. really?! is this who you want running the franchise? (that question is ONLY aimed at raider fans)

i admit that the franchise will never be the same once al is gone, and he has quite the legacy, but one way in which the franchise will be different (hopefully) is that there will not be utter chaos at the top of the food chain. for once maybe people will be able to do the job they were hired for without any micro managing from the top. i say take the keys from the old man asap!

Because looking at the past is the only way to judge any entity “going forward”. Unless you have a time machine or something.

For example, you posted that moronic comment in the past. I can’t know for sure that you’ll continue to post moronic comments, but the only information I have is from the past. So, it isn’t looking very good for you.

Just like it isn’t looking good for the Raiders. Al Davis has made stupid decision after stupid decision the last ten years. Are we supposed to believe that all of a sudden his decisions will become brilliant?

“give the man credit for standing up to the likes of Lame Kiffin and Tom (curly) Cable”

Okay, I’ll give him credit. BTW, who hired those two anyway? Also, didn’t Al come to Cable’s defense when the whole “broken jaw” fiasco happened in Napa and the “women beater” allegations came to light? Seems as though it would have been pretty easy to cut the ties with Cable right then instead of months laster. As far as “standing up to” Kiffin, didn’t that end up being either Kiffin or Jamarcus? I seem to recall that an overhead projector was involved. Regarding Jamarcus Russell, Kiffin or Davis, who was the more accurate talent evaluator?

  38. encinitasraider says: Jan 19, 2011 5:06 PM

When Jackson arrived, Cable reluctantly allowed for a change in blocking schemes, going to more gap and power blocking as opposed to to the stretch-and-cut zone blocking system. Cable, before Jackson arrived, was adamant that he was an Alex Gibbs disciple, a “zone blocking purist,” as Davis called him.

“I’m not a zone blocking purist, and we switched this year already,” Davis said. “We got it started into gap, we got it into power, and we got it into zone, and that’s what Hue believes. He did it at Baltimore, and that intrigued me.”

    – More of Davis’ take on Cable’s support in the locker room: “As much as you think Tom was supported in the locker room, he was to a point. He was with the people that he socialized (with), where Hue Jackson will be supported in the locker room just as much as Tom Cable if not more.”

If you want to be the worst in scoring then you should hire Cable as your OC…

“I went back and checked it thoroughly. Cable has been in football 20 years, had been with a winning team three years out of 20,” Davis said. “I didn’t like his statement, and some of you took it and used it, but I didn’t like it. If that’s not being a loser in our world, I don’t know what it is, come in 500. That’s never been my goal.”

  39. bennybob says: Jan 19, 2011 5:33 PM

You’re just now realizing that it’s time to take the keys from Davis?! It was time a decade ago and certainly it was very evident five years ago.
You’re pretty late on this one.

as a raider fan i respect the hell out of al davis, he definetly is a players owner, many previous players have stated how much davis had there backs, i do think however that it is time to hire a a new personal to handle press conferences and GM duties, it doesnt mean that i wouldnt want to sit down and just talk football with al (cuz that would be an incredibe experience) i just think its time he steps down for the future of the empire he lead before he destroys the legacy

  43. 1seriously1 says: Jan 19, 2011 5:53 PM

I haven’t kept up with all of the lawsuits against Al and the Raider’s organization from previous coaches and players trying to get money they thought was owed to them, but haven’t there been a few? And hasn’t the Raider’s won all of the disputes and not payed a dime to any of them? The old guy must be doing something right.

I’ve been making fun of the way Al Davis looks all week. The only thing I know about the press conference was the pictures and the articles on PFT. I watched the press conference online today.

Al Davis impressed me, very much. I will no longer mock that man, he may look bad, but he is not as senile as PFT lets on.

  46. boknowsvt says: Jan 19, 2011 6:12 PM

Let me get this straight…you’re crucifying him for answering questions from reporters honestly? Would you rather him respond with “I’m not going to go into that”? No you wouldn’t. These people asked him questions and he answered those questions. I respect the guy for at least being honest…and right about Cable. The guy was a bad HC. Any Raider fan knows that Hue Jackson was the man responsible for the success of the Raider offense this year. He came in and changed the blocking scheme, and minus DHB, found a way to get career numbers out of key players. Davis may not run a franchise well, but don’t give him grief for being honest.

  47. skulz fontaine says: Jan 19, 2011 6:30 PM

Still, the photag PFT has posted is worse than the one from yesterday. Brother Al looks like about four miles of really bad road.
Gosh, remember a way back when and the Raiders had John Madden as coach and the Raiders were THE team and won a Super Bowl and then what’s-his-name was Raiders coach and they won a Super Bowl and then the Raiders had Shanahanading-dong and they fired him and he went to Denver and they won a Super Bowl and…
    I’m just saying that’s all.

  48. shiv1623 says: Jan 19, 2011 6:35 PM

Is that supposed to be a metaphor for the Raiders org?!?!

  49. commandercornpone says: Jan 19, 2011 6:37 PM

well i will preface by saying i dont like dracula-al either…

and he isnt much better if any than kiffin. and he could have fired cable earlier, on the spot.

but he finally came clean on a few things, and yes he is still sharper than a lot of folks his age.

whoever takes the raiders over from al is going to have to be toward al like he was to wayne valley.

    ruthless. al-like.

also, while they havent been world-beaters the last 25 years… they only had one sustained series of sucky years, 2003-2009. other than that, 1987 and 1997. they had 6 .500 seasons and 3 7-9 seasons. competitive. maybe they werent the team they were from 1963-85 anymore (only 2 losing seasons), but then what team is.

the niners faded. the cowboys faded. the vikes faded over and over again. the rams faded. the fins faded in december annually. i will excuse the steelers since they have had only 7 non-winning seasons since 72. but only 13 non-losing seasons from 1933-71.

  50. toe4 says: Jan 19, 2011 8:30 PM

My favorite portion of the press conference was when the PR guy dismissed the press and Al told them to wait a minute and then while the press were trying to figure out if they were going or staying Al looked up to the PR guy and said, “you (past tense f word) it up.”
