Raiders tab Al Saunders as offensive coordinator

A. Saunderscruise

Raiders Al Davis continues to make the coaching hires that everyone expects.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Davis hired Ravens assistant Al Saunders as offensive coordinator in Oakland.

Saunders spent the last two years in Baltimore, and is well known for his run in Kansas City from 2001-2005 as offensive coordinator.  He also was the head coach of the Chargers from 1986-1988, so he’s almost completed a tour of the AFC West.

Saunders’ hire was largely expected around the league after Davis tabbed Hue Jackson, who worked with Saunders in Baltimore.  Davis has also previously interviewed Saunders for spots on previous staffs.

Unlike Chuck Pagano, Saunders is happy to get sentenced to time in Oakland.

When ever I hear a story starting with ” The Oakland Raiders …” I think of the trailer park I pass on the way to work, and how much crazier it would be if Al Davis was the land lord.

When you get a job in the NFL I am sure your super pumped, but if its with Oakland are you calling your friends going ” I know I know.. Its where pros go to die.. but this is my last shot…

Saunders was an Offensive minded HC for the Chargers and he failed miserably. He is a “nice guy” but the Players do not respond to him. Hue Jackson will be the next ex-Raiders Head Coach that the teams keeps money from. Jackson and Saunders will be gone by mid-season.

  10. WingT says: Jan 20, 2011 9:55 PM

Why does it have to be Al Davis continues to make coaching hires everyone expects?

Hue Jackson will end up being a very good Raiders coach who respects Al Davis and will hopefully not bring any negative publicity to the organization like Cable did.

Last year when Jackson was hired I researched his background and noticed everywhere he was at he was well liked and respected by players and coaches alike. It didn’t matter if he was a RB’s coach, QB coach at USC, WR’s coach in Cincinnati, or OC in Oakland, everyone loves him and play for him.

Correlation? The Raiders running attack became 2nd in the league with 19 TD’s. Previous season in Baltimore 5th in the league with 22 TD’s. After he left they dropped to 14th with 11 TD’s. Coincidence?

Bringing in Saunders is a safe hire for Jackson in the sheer fact there’s “no fox in the hen house” and he knows the system Jackson is running having worked together previously. He’s going to run Jackson’s system and have the background to help the offense continue to gel.

    He’s a great hire.

Wow, as a Chiefs fan this is a little scary. Al made a couple average QB’s look damn good in KC. Damon Huard comes to mind…

2 good things though; most importantly they still have Al “the darth vader look alike” Davis which he’s holding the franchise back. And 2, they’re the faiders, they can go 6-0 in the division and still choke the rest of the season and miss the playoffs…

  16. smellmyface says: Jan 20, 2011 10:14 PM

  18. PCa Survivor says: Jan 20, 2011 10:22 PM

Great news for Jason Campbell. From his previous two years in Saunders’ offense he already knows 300 of the 700 page playbook.

  19. parkerfly says: Jan 20, 2011 10:23 PM

If Saunders is going to implement the same offense he ran in Kansas City and Washington, the Raiders don’t have the personnel to run it. They’ll have similar results to what Washington did.

  20. rideout9 says: Jan 20, 2011 10:28 PM

im happy to see that the raiders are changing their culture, and actually establishing some consistency, im expecting a HUGE year from campbell and dmac and hopefully we can retain asomugha and make up for no 1st rd pick by signing a legit free agent (ochocinco perhaps?)

Your too right… Jon grudens career was done after he left Oakland… he only won a super bowl. Randy moss we all know was done after his stint… he pretty much was dead in new England right… how bout rob Ryan… surly he’s not in the NFL anymore right… the cowboys aren’t a prestigious franchise… let’s not forget the biggest career to bomb… john madden… I think all his contributions to football were because of his “last shot” in Oakland… I hate how people think Oakland is a joke… yet u have teams with worse records, no super bowls, and dare I say not one pro bowler…

    This is a fact.

The Raiders will win 10 games next year, and all of you Na Sayers will be humbled. Most people who post here have no idea how close this team is to being great again.

And by “Again” I mean Again, and Again, and Again… Unlike most NFL teams can claim.

Sh*t on Al Davis all you want. The man has done more for the NFL than anyone alive today. That is why he is in the Hall Of Fame. He has done more for former Raider Players than any owner before him or after.

You do not know this, for you do not know this man.

what’s with all the Al Davis Haters? Al Davis’ team has won 3 super bowls and been there 5 times so why all the fuss about an 81 year old man doing what he wants with his own time and money? Ochocinco would be a nice fit in oaktown but I don’t think Al Davis will allow it, but lets see. I think Chad will be a different person in Oakland All teams have down years. It took like forever for the Steelers to finally start getting things right. All teams suck for long stretches but everybody love to hate the Raiders and Al Davis. He hired the non-white coach, the first non- white QB, the first woman exec. Jim Plunkett was the first non-white QB to not only win al super bowl but he won 2. Al is an icon , stop the hate.

“a WR and a OL away from being in the SB”

guarantees of +10 wins when the team couldnt handle the NFC West. 11 wins….and Raider supporters dislike my comments.

any respectable Raider fan would be more outraged by the dumb crap their own fans post than any negative remarks i make about their team, and logical human being would.

all the crap thats been said, you better pray your team wins more than 9 games next year. remember, jason Campbell is still your QB and Al Davis is still your owner. both of whom are subpar in what they do, and those are major parts of the team.

can 10 wins happen? sure, anything is possible. likely? no sane bettor would make that bet.

one last thing, you know its sad when most your fans have to talk about Davis’ past accomplishments for justification that the franchise is in good hands or he is still a competent owner. i mean really guys? do you know how incredibly pathetic that sounds? of course not, carry on.

Alright geniuses, with the Saunders hiring, you think Hue will stop calling the plays on offense? If you say yes, go stick your head in the oven. Saunders will be a big part on the practice field, the film room and will be someone Hue can bounce ideas off of. Hue is still the man on offense. Saunders did some magic in KC when he was there. He’s got a baller in D-Mac like he did in Holmes. When Saunders was with Campbell in Washington, Campbell just got into the league, a rookie. You gotta give a rookie leeway. Saunders experience in the league and working with Hue in B-More is gonna be exciting.

    Alright haters, you may resume.

This doesn’t mean anything. Hue Jackson is going to run the team, they are going to run his offense, and he will be calling the plays. All Saunders will do is coach up offensive players at practice. He will be more of an Assistant OC to Hue

  37. boknowsvt says: Jan 21, 2011 6:59 AM

At his press conference, Jackson already said that he will be calling the offensive plays and the new OC would work with his offense.

  38. raiderredleg says: Jan 21, 2011 7:33 AM

Solid move…Hue and Campbell both have history with Saunders and since Hue will still be the playcaller I think having Saunders in the OC slot will give Hue a veteran assistant to help him focus on developing and solidifying the make up of the offense.

If Gallery/Bush leave via FA Saunders will be VITAL in developing their replacements. Plus you always have DHB out there that needs all the TLC he can get along with proving that DMAC’s great year wasn’t a fluke.

Of course it ALL means nothing without a CBA…Hopefully the owners and players will figure that out or there will be plenty of Haters out there with nothing to trash the Raiders about since there won’t be any football being played in 2011.

Wait I guess PFT could keep on with the personal attack on Al Davis himself, making fun of his press conferences and the way he looks in his 80s and such…Those comments ALWAYS seemed to be in vogue on PFT…Oh well.

Aren’t YOU passionate about YOUR favorite team…Why continually take the time to trash the Raiders and their devoted fans’ postings?

If you don’t like reading postings from “delusional Raider fans” and are outraged by the “dump crap” they write THEN STOP READING PFT ARTICLES ON THE RAIDERS! Otherwise GET OVER IT!

As far as “putting delusional fans get back in their place” does PFT/NFL pay you to do that on this website or is that your “life mission”?

If you have THAT much time to be a Raider Hater why don’t you instead push yourself away from the keyboard and go volunteer in your local community?

It’s a free country and I know that being a Raider fan will ALWAYS involve Haters hating. I just don’t understand why the Haters get so personal in their attacks on Al Davis and the Raiders…It is almost like Al Davis spent the last 50 years personally going to every Hater’s house in America, knocking on their door and when they opened the door, kicking them in the groin.

After the crap I saw posted when Jack Tatum died I can ONLY imagine the vitrol and hate that will spew when Al Davis passes away from Haters.

Did I want KC to win? Of course, but as a realist KC’s not a top 4 team in the AFC so the experience was great and will be vital for the Chiefs gettting to the AFC Championship game next year, then winning the SB twice in the next 4 years…

If you’re lucky, Al will sell your team, you can go back to LA then maybe be able to compete for a playoff spot.

You should be EXTREMELY nice to “Faider” fans…If Cable’s team hadn’t laid eggs against the Cards and 49ers that last regular season game would have meant more than just the “Faiders” kicking your tail in preperation for getting your tail kicked AGAIN a week ago by the Ravens in the first round of the playoffs (BTW…Two loses AT HOME to finish the season isn’t anything proud of).

    FINALLY…Two questions:

    1) Last time the Chiefs won a Superbowl?

    2) Last time the Chiefs even won a playoff game?

I know the Raiders have been bad since 2002, but at least I don’t post on other AFC West Team PFT articles how the “Faiders” are going to win two Super Bowls!

im not paid to state the obvious about the Raiders. do you really think it takes any work to do so? and i already volunteer in my community, got any other suggestions, counselor?

i only dislike the Raiders when they are good, not when they are irrelevant. i assure you there are higher teams on the list, dont be such a p*ssy. im also not the one making personal attacks on Al Davis. i dont talk about his health or the way he looks, i purely talk about his performance as the owner of the Oakland Raiders. i think that is fair for me to do, and rather unfair that you make that kind of claim.

do you and other Raider fans want AL Davis to die? i sure dont. as long as hes around, that team will continue to lose. im not being facetious, im dead serious. no pun intended. :)

also theres a difference in being passionate and delusional. why cant one love their team and want them to win every game by 100 yet be reasonable and have perspective when discussing them? is it impossible to level headed and a fanatic? i think so. the extreme homers are ridiculous, and i dont even like the extreme homers of my team. they are annoying to me. by all means, be passionate, just have a damn brain too. no need for blind homerism. you also act like i dont bag on other teams, maybe you should pay more attention, or maybe you only read Raider articles. hmm…

then you talk about dropping 2 winnable games like the Raiders record should have been better than 8-8. another stupid theory. your record is what it is. you should have won 2 more? you could have easily lost a handful more. 2 people can play that game.

say what you want but im not saying “shoulda, woulda, coulda.” im not seeing the glass a quarter full instead of 3 quarters empty. you and other Raider fans on this site dont like what i say when they should be questioning their own fans BS. instead youd rather question a “hater” instead of a fellow fan, no matter the ridiculousness. amusing.

Is it because when you were younger Al Davis lead his organization to 30 straight years of dominance? A win percentage of .661 from 1963 to 1992? Best in ALL professional sports of that time period. Did it bother you to see Al give Kiffin and Cable what they deserved? To be shown the door. Did Al Davis make you upset when he drafted Jamarcus Russell when ESPN, Mel Kiper Jr., and the rest of the so called experts had convinced everyone in the league that he was the best QB in the draft that year? Yeah, Al’s made some mistakes along the way. But Al’s not this senile old man that a lot of people think…Al had possibly his best draft ever just this past year…He’s built himself a solid young football team that is full of playmakers…He’s assembled himself a good coaching staff with Jackson, Waufle, and now Saunders and he’s ready to return the Raiders to dominance. He’s ready to make one last run before time runs out on him. And you can hate all you want…But deep down, I feel like my team is coming! I feel like the Raiders are back! And I hope like hell Al gets it done while he still has a chance to see it happen. Because he is a Legend to the game no matter how you look at it. He eats, sleeps, and breaths for my team! then you talk about dropping 2 winnable games like the Raiders record should have been better than 8-8. another stupid theory. your record is what it is. you should have won 2 more? you could have easily lost a handful more. 2 people can play that game.

say what you want but im not saying “shoulda, woulda, coulda.” im not seeing the glass a quarter full instead of 3 quarters empty. you and other Raider fans on this site dont like what i say when they should be questioning their own fans BS. instead youd rather question a “hater” instead of a fellow fan, no matter the ridiculousness. amusing.
