Steelers’ Ike Taylor on Santonio Holmes: I’ll lay him out

The NFL has been reminding all players to be respectful in their comments toward each other. But Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor may not have received the memo.

Taylor said he’s still friends with ex-teammate Santonio Holmes, but that when Holmes is in a Jets uniform on Sunday, Taylor plans to put a hurting on him.

I’m going to try to be as disrespectful as possible once we get between those white lines,” Taylor told the New York Post. “Friendship doesn’t enter into it then.”

Taylor also indicated that if he hurts Holmes in the process of being disrespectful, he won’t feel bad about it.

“I’m not going to hesitate to lay him out,” Taylor said. “No question at all. You know why? Because he ain’t going to hesitate to crack on me if he gets a chance.”

With those comments, Taylor ensured that the officials will be watching extra closely if he does get his chance to lay Holmes out.

you can’t catch him ike so good luck

  2. ArtModellsPimp says: Jan 20, 2011 7:45 AM

It’s a good thing for Ike and the Steelers that this will be a football game, and not a spelling contest.

  3. iluvwikileaks says: Jan 20, 2011 7:47 AM

Calm down, Michael. It will be OK.

  4. chapnastier says: Jan 20, 2011 7:51 AM

When the Jets do it there is a huge up-roar but when the Steelers do it, the officials will be watching out for them. Besides that, is anyone else tired of the NFL caring about trash talking? The NFL is entertainment and the trash talking is part of the game and enhances the entertainment. As long as it isn’t WWE style then they should stay the hell out of it.

  5. deanvernonwormer says: Jan 20, 2011 7:53 AM

Holmes will get the last laugh while Taylor watches the Super Bowl on TV after getting up that morning in a nice warm bed.

  6. patssmelllikepoo says: Jan 20, 2011 7:59 AM

This Ike Taylor couldn’t even layout Tina Turner! Ike buddy, your mediocre at best.

  7. justinsam10 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:04 AM

I guess real men say I love you off the field and I’m your brother but when we those lights are on bright and we get in between those lines, you are a deadman and if I have to kill I will, but its just a game. I respect Ike for saying what he said and im sure Holmes feels the same, he wants to beat his old team and get a SB ring at their expense. Redemption.

  8. pittsixtimechamp says: Jan 20, 2011 8:05 AM

Like the refs aren’t already watching the Steelers “extra close” when it comes to hard hits. Oh by the way this is tackle football people! Difference between us and them is Hines Ward laughed when the Rat Birds put a bounty on his head.

  9. gameon274 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:05 AM

I think this is a stretch (not surprising… steelers item, inciting headline, should be a lot of comments). But come on. Saying that a cornerback is going to to be disrespectful to a wide receiver is hardly extreme smack talk. And sure. If I’ll told someone “If I see you walking down the street, imma lay you out!!1!” Sure. Fine. You could say that I wouldn’t feel bad about hurting someone. But saying you want to lay someone out who is literally wrapped in protective equipment, and will likely be on the ground at some point? Come on. Big time stretch to say that he means that he wants to hurt him. He wants to tackle him, hit him hard. You think the Jets aren’t thinking the same thing about the opposing QB (especially), wide receivers, etc? Of course they are. If this is where the league’s going, saying a couple guys with reason for a healthy rivalry can’t want to lay big hits on each other, then wow. I’m going to need a new hobby. But more than likely, this is is the author’s attempt to say, “U Mad, Steeler fans?”

  10. nxsteven says: Jan 20, 2011 8:09 AM

Hope this doesn’t lead to more Steeler fans whining about flags – as if that makes any sense to begin with.

  11. abrienza428 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:10 AM

    Just shut up Taylor

  12. jackhall00 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:12 AM

When is he going ley him out? After he gets beat for a long touchdown?
The Steelers secondary is horrible and if they win and end up playing GB in the Bowl, GB is going to put up a LOT of points on them.

  13. redguy12588 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:14 AM

As long as the refs watch Antonio “Grabbie” Cromartie and Dwight “Hey I like your jersey, mind if I take it with me?” Lowery just as closely, I’m all right with this.

  14. alanschech says: Jan 20, 2011 8:18 AM

Good to see that Ike Taylor is acting with sportsmanship. A great football game is set to take place on Sunday, and he has to mar it with threatening someone.

Good to see the league treats all teams the same too. Bart Scott says something about Wes Welker, the league goes nuts threatening everyone about letting trash talk get on the field, but someone threatens a Jet…nothing.

  15. geezohman says: Jan 20, 2011 8:19 AM

on yeah… let the talk begin !

Everyone is watching… and the Refs… love that flags against the Steelers… we made it through last week

like the big billboard in the middle of winter in Minnesota with a message to Mother Nature..

    BRING IT !

  16. jodop says: Jan 20, 2011 8:27 AM

These comments don’t seem all that inflammatory. Basically it’s “we’re friends off the field, but I’m gonna play hard because I know he’s gonna play hard.”

  17. MinnesnowtaJagsFan says: Jan 20, 2011 8:28 AM

Once again, the NFL’s front office does little to control the players on the field. Maybe a one game playoff suspension would shut them all up.

  18. drumbug7 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:30 AM

“With those comments, Taylor ensured that the officials will be watching extra closely if he does get his chance to lay Holmes out.”

Great. Just what Steeler games need. More flags.

  19. footballfan says: Jan 20, 2011 8:34 AM

Ike, Please shut your mouth and play the game. Someone is going to lay you out if you are not careful!

  20. damnws6 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:36 AM

I’m all for talking smack (I’m a Jets fan) and I don’t mind the Steelers talking either. It’s going to be a great game and trash talking seems to add to this game, but is Taylor dumb?

The Refs and the League have obviously kept a closer eye on the Steelers D for illegal hits and such this year, WHY draw even more attention from them in the AFC Championship?

Whatever though, just makes it easier for my Jets to win if he gets called for penalties.

  21. cromags says: Jan 20, 2011 8:38 AM

    Just shut up and play.

  22. kingjoe1 says: Jan 20, 2011 8:39 AM

Taylor is as over-rated of a player as there is in the Championship weekend. When Troy is not out there, he is useless

  23. masteel says: Jan 20, 2011 8:41 AM

I guess this is the ‘media’ attempting to create a few story lines – since the players and coaches have been pretty tame in their dialogue over this game.

Gotta love how Ike Taylor basically admits that they are still friends …and if I recall correctly prior to the Week 15 game a variety of Steeler players said it would “be nice to see Tone …” but all admitted they wanted him & Jets to walk out of Heinz with a loss.

I appreciate Ike’s passion to admit that once the whistle is blown – he will try to make sure he does what he can to help the Steelers win the game. AND since the Steelers have been a poster team for personal fouls, and hits on defenseless receivers he will probably make sure his ‘lay out’ hit(s) are clean, legal, and hard.

    GO Steelers !!!

  24. ny82jy says: Jan 20, 2011 8:42 AM

Yea Ike you gotta catch him first and I doubt u will cause your a average corner at best. He will he burned at least once by games end!!

    Bravo, Ike Taylor!!!!!!!
THIS is how football’s supposed to be!!!!
Also, 3 cheers for Bart Scott, Woody Johnson’s new P.R. man!!

It’s about time the NFL once again became a masculine game. Chuck Bednarik can finally feel good about it!!

  26. steelersmashmouth says: Jan 20, 2011 8:49 AM

Why wouldn’t any self respecting Steeler play as tough, hard nosed, and physical as he possibly could in pursuit of a super bowl ring? Why do you keep trying to fabricate a story where there isn’t one ?Why is this the title of this article different than what Ike Taylor was quoted as actually saying in the article? Welcome to “media creations”…..

Eveytime i watch the steelers i see that clown get burned or take a stupid penalty. He will be exposed on sunday

Seriously, what a reach to make this into big time trash talking. Even the quote in the headline is misleading, leaving some of the words out made it sound much more biting.

It came down to “he’s my friend, but i’ll blast him just like he’ll blast me between the white lines”.

Big deal. Is that really a story?

  44. andyprough says: Jan 20, 2011 9:58 AM

From the article – its not about the hitting, its about “Playing PlayStation”:

“I talked to ‘Tone’ [on Tuesday], but it was what we always talk about — ‘What you doing?’ Playing PlayStation, what you doing? ‘Playing PlayStation.’ No [on-field] matchups or anything like that. We just rap.”

  45. steeelfann says: Jan 20, 2011 10:12 AM

Isn’t Taylor supposed to lay out Jets in the game? Aren’t the Jets supposed to lay out Steelers in the game?

C’mon man, you know this is not a real story, you are just stirring the pot.

  46. thatmulekicks says: Jan 20, 2011 10:20 AM

I hope Tomlin pulled this meat head aside and told him to shut his mouth. Taylor can’t even cover a guy like Holmes.

I still have the Ryan Clark, “We gonna kick the pats asses” quote burned in my mind and the subsequent ass kicking we took.

These guys should be kept on an island until 10 minutes before kick-off.

  47. BC says: Jan 20, 2011 10:25 AM

Ike, you have to be able to actually TACKLE SOMEBODY in order to lay them out.

  48. danj3678 says: Jan 20, 2011 10:28 AM

I love reading these. You can spot the Pittsburgh homers all over the place.. haahahahahahaa…. They defend everything about their team no matter how ridiculously stupid it is. LOL And this… this is just stupid for Ike to even say. Especially with the NFL in the process of speaking out about respect for the game.. LOL… What a moron!

  49. masteel says: Jan 20, 2011 10:34 AM

    FYI – Steeler Fans.

Ravens just fired their Offensive Line Coach (John Matsko) and the Defensive Coordinator Mattison – just resigned and left to do the same job for the University of Michigan.

Huh?? So sudden …. you think maybe Harbaugh is attempting to deflect criticism from his overall coaching when it comes to playing us. His attempt at the ‘review’ – no ‘review’ [read extra :30 timeout] during our game didn’t work. His QB came up short again in a BIG game. Our RB did enough to get in the end zone. How about when he lost his cool …trying to call the Time Out at the 2:20 mark …flailing his arms and cussing up a storm – that was easy to read his lips.

    GO Steelers

  50. originalsteelcurtain says: Jan 20, 2011 10:40 AM

Ike Taylor is one of the best CB’s in the league. He’s faster than Stonio, who’s more quick than fast. If Ike could hold on to INT’s, he’d be a perrenial Pro Bowler. Often times he will shadow a #1WR, but probably not very much this Sunday.

Get your smack talk in now Jets fans, because your season ends Sunday.

Steelers D-Backs suck? How about a league-low 15 TD’s allowed all season, combined with a league low 5 rushing TD’s all season. (24 and 11 for your beloved Jets)

Jests scored 1 offensive TD vs Steelers in December, and Polamalu didn’t play.

    I’ll give you 2 TD’s this time: Steelers 27 Jets 17

  51. discosucs2005 says: Jan 20, 2011 10:52 AM

This hardly constitutes “trash talk.” In fact, it sounds like he was saying he is friends with Holmes but once the game starts he isn’t getting any special treatment and doesn’t expect to get any in return.

Ike Taylor is a really underrated corner I think. I say I think because I really have no evidence to back that up, other than when I’ve seen him play, he has seem to do a good job of limiting whatever WR he is on. I believe (please correct me if I’m wrong) he was on Boldin last week, and did an excellent job on him. Holmes is better (or at least faster) than Boldin, so I doubt Taylor will hold him to -2 yards, but it will certainly be one of the key match ups of the game.

What a NON STORY. I mean can this site try any harder to make stuff up…(ie did you learn nothing from the A.Rodgers issue).

So a def player will attempt to hit an offense player during the game. hmm…sounds like another amazing story you broke first here.

Oh course they will hit each other. it is a football game.

  54. iluvwikileaks says: Jan 20, 2011 11:08 AM

Let me get this straight Jets fans; It’s OK for the players on your team to trash talk players from other teams all season. But, when one Steeler runs off his mouth you are suddenly offended and upset? Explain.

Anyway, I kind of like the Jets and what they’ve done this season. But….

Anybody notice how this has stayed on the ‘top’ of the feed for items to view ….it’s been 4 hours basically. Seems as though the site is just trying to keep it up – create a little bit of controversy.

How come the Ravens coaching staff changes haven’t been listed, or Mike Shula interviewing for the Panthers, Z. Miller (Raiders) replacing A. Gates (Chargers) on the AFC Pro Bowl roster for TE, or maybe letting Cowboy fans know the local paper reports that Roy Williams is going to be cut since his contract is way to big a hit since his attitude is perceived to be ‘bad’ along with his production has declined …????

  57. lawboy2000 says: Jan 20, 2011 11:29 AM

    redguy12588 is right.

These Jets DBs look a lot like the Patriots and Eagles DBs from 2004: grab, grab, grab.

Remember that they were so bad that year that the league placed “an emphasis” on pass interference in 2005. That “emphasis” no doubt led to a very tight pass interference call in Super Bowl XL against Darrell Jackson nullifying a TD.

It also led to just as tight a pass interference call against Heath Miller later in the first half. Of course, that one didn’t nullify a TD. It just help setup Roethlisberger-to-Ward at the goal line on 3d-and-forever.

Revis is the best in the game and doesn’t need to grab, but he sure does it anyway.

  58. melikefootball says: Jan 20, 2011 11:48 AM

  59. wetpaperbag2 says: Jan 20, 2011 11:58 AM

Ike Taylor just better be careful to not spear or launch himself head first into a player with his helmet; something that the Steeler secondary is quite adept at. They even take out their own teammates (see last Ravens/Steelers game).

  60. steelernation1 says: Jan 20, 2011 12:00 PM

WHO CARES..GODHELL SHUT UP WORRY BOUT MORE IMPORTANT THINGS LIKE YOUR JOB,you stink u are ruining the game.we wont have football this coming year if you don’t focus on that instead.

and to everyone else jets fans steelers fans who be it.its going to be a good game, after the game no excuses the better team won.chances are stillers but i didnt say that 😛

  61. steelersfan2011 says: Jan 20, 2011 12:01 PM

Ike Taylor is the most underated corner in the league. Lets not forget that he has started every game this year and only given up one TD! ALL YEAR! He is also the only starting corner in the league that has 2 Super Bowl Rings.

For those non-Steeler fans who dont know, Ike and Santonio are like best friends. They spend every off season together training in Orlando. Santonio was with Ike in when he got the phone call that he had been traded. This is no “war of words” this is simply one friend challenging another.

As far as the comments about Ike being slow, check this out. Tom Shaw the Speed Coach responsible for training Deion Sanders, Chris Johnson, Michael Vick and some of the other fastest players to ever play in the NFL also trains Ike and Santonio every off season. Tom Shaw said that Ike is the fastest player he has ever coached! If you don’t beleive it check out the YouTube video about it to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Just go to YouTube and type in “Ike Taylor fastest player in the NFL”

  62. ladystpaul says: Jan 20, 2011 12:22 PM

It’s a bit disingenuous of Jets fans to cry foul over smack. Their team has the biggest mouths in the league.

And really, Ike Taylor? Are you really worried about him?

  63. burghhc52 says: Jan 20, 2011 12:39 PM

Wow some of these comments are funny. There is nothing inflammatory about these remarks at all. Translation to a football fan: “We’re friends, but during the 60minutes of football we’ll be playing on Sunday, we’re both going to be playing hard trying to beat the other”. There you go folks, that’s about it.

And to the people saying “Ike won’t be able to catch him”…..are you SERIOUS?? Are you all forgetting that Holmes was basically a non factor in the first game? What…6 catches or so for 40yds? Yes…he BURNED Ike all game LOL. Ike is one of the underrated corners in the game, mainly b/c he drops a copious amount of interceptions. But the guy can cover…VERY well…he IS fast…and he plays the run as well as any CB in football right now. Watch a game other than your own teams and you’d see this.

Even when Troy is out, it’s not Ike that is getting abused, not by a long shot. It’s Gay, Mcfadden, and the receivers getting behind the safeties. It’s NOT Ike, I can promise you that. Will Holmes have a big day on Sunday? Who the heck knows, he might, he might not. Holmes in a great receiver, but Ike has what it takes to shut him down. Just like he has to Andre Johnson, TO, Ocho Cinco, Randy Moss, and many many other receivers.

But go aheads Jets fans…keep talking…seems like that’s all you’re good for. It’s going to be another loss in the AFCCG for you, then you can come back and tell me how “slow” Ike is 🙂

  64. jamson64 says: Jan 20, 2011 7:38 PM

    You know it.

The thing is that bloggers know too many people are stupid and lazy. They read: “Steelers’ Ike Taylor on Santonio Holmes: I’ll lay him out”.

In reality what was said was:
““I’m going to try to be as disrespectful as possible once we get between those white lines,” Taylor told the New York Post.
