Thank you Mr Rooney. You have spoken for probably 95% of fans and players on that one. The thing that worries me the most about this CBA is that too many people (on both sides, union and owners) are looking at how to make the most $$ the fastest an not what's good for the SPORT and the LEAGUE.

Text messages in Nevada and a medical exam in Georgia proved those accusations false--as authorities explained long ago. Enjoy being 12 and screaming rape on every thread. Someday you'll have to grow up and be a man. Or maybe not.

It's called the "Rooney Rule" simply because Dan chaired the committee, not because he devised the rule. A committee of owners came up with it by request and the entire ownership agreed to it. Nothing was forced on them.

cincyorangeandblack ...

As majority owner of an NFL franchise, it concerns him. As a football fan, it concerns him. As many have pointed out, they're re-doing the CBA because owners like Jerry Jones want more money--not because there's a problem with the CBA as is.

djego7 ...

Read goodjet's comment right below yours. He's not a Steelers fan, but he understands his NFL history, so he understands why the opinion one of the few remaining original NFL owners--a man who's been involved in so many important league decisions--is important. You can run back out and play now.

What I find interesting as a Panthers fan is that I keep hearing Jerry Richardson is the unnamed leader of the owners, and he's championing everything we've heard about the owners' demands (including the 18 game season). At the same time, it's no secret that Richardson's had a man-crush on the Rooneys for decades.

So, what's it gonna be, "Big Cat"? Follow the money, or follow the Rooneys?

cincyorangenblack says: Jan 21, 2011 5:18 PM

"If he did such a great job with the last CBA (that totally screwed retired players out of much needed medical care) then why are they at such an impass at fixing “his” mistakes this time around."

The only mistake that was made with the current CBA was that the owners agreed to it.

Now they don't like it, and they want to change it. The players aren't asking for another dime.

And how exactly is the current CBA all Rooney's doing anyway?

halftermguv, amen to that.

The last time Dan Rooney was in town he straightened Goodell out about the league targeting the Steelers with their ridiculous calls and fines.
And it hasn't happened since.

I think it's time Rooney and the rest of the owners told Roger to update his résumé.

I know its tough for you to every anything other than an insult about Al Davis, but he also said he'd be out of the negotiations. Which is a bigger shame than Daniel Rooney sitting out. Davis has had legitimate STRONG impact over the negotiations over the years. Some credit him for getting the last deal finished.

I hope Roger Goodell craps his pants. We need more Rooneys to say what a bad idea 18 games is. Goodell's been playing with the truth when he says that everyone is in favor of 18 games - he's interpreting a dislike for four preseason games as automatic support because the idea of 16+2 is anathema to him.

Hope he does land the NI peace initiative though, that'd be cool.

@paulnoga

Is that really the reason, you d*mb bag of s**t?

No one even pays actually deference to the Rooney rule. You could interview in Arsenio Hall to bypass the rule.

Secondly, breaking the rule only results in at $250K fine, if I'm not mistaken. In other words, it's 1/4000 of what most organizations are worth.

Rooney just showed how important he is to the NFL. He's actually not concerned about the money because he would rather maintain the integrity of the game.

Too bad it won't work.

It continues to amaze me the number of high profile rich people that don't want their money and act as though they don't deserve their own money, all while living a rich man's life.

Give it away while your alive. But of course that isn't what he means. What he means is "I'm better than my peers. I don't want the money but I'll keep it if I have to."

If you would rather not have the money GIVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE!

I believe Rooney's government position prohibits him from direct involvement in the labor negotiations. And yes, it's a shame. He was chiefly responsible for negotiating the last CBA, and he does put the good of the league and the fans ahead of personal profit. But men like Rooney are outnumbered these days ... not only in football.

Before the double-digit IQ crowd starts, Rooney was involved more than two decades in the Northern Ireland peace initiative, which is at a critical stage now. That's why he was chosen Ambassador to Ireland. And he was a lifelong conservative. So for once, please spare us your ignorance.
