Shurmur coy about Chilly

The Browns don’t have an offensive coordinator.  The Browns plan to run the West Coast offense.

Former Vikings coach Brad Childress runs the West Coast offense.  Childress doesn’t have a job.

So could Childress land in Cleveland, under new Browns coach Pat Shurmur?

Shurmur wouldn’t provide any clarity in that regard, but he pointed out that he and Chilly used to jog together in Philadelphia, and that they were hired by Eagles coach Andy Reid on the same day.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Brad,” Shurmur said.  “Brad’s a friend of mine, obviously a colleague. . . .  Who knows whether our paths will cross this time or not?”

Shurmur generally declined to name any of the candidates to serve as offensive coordinator.  Shurmur has said that he plans to call the plays.

Childress interviewed with the Dolphins for the position that went to former Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.  Childress also reportedly met on Thursday night with Bengals coach Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati.

So it’s safe to assume that Reid didn’t jog with them?

Childress won’t be the OC, but regardless of who it is, best thing you can say about Browns is that for first time since they came back in ’99, the entire organization is on the same page, knows what they are doing, and have a poised and accurate young QB to develop.

Whoever gets Childress is in for a season of 1st down run, 2nd down run, 3rd down pass, 4th down punt on just about every possession.

Some guys make great assistants and should never be HCs. Peter Principle: People rise to their level of incompetence. Doesn’t mean that either will fail as coordinators. It was because they were GREAT coordinators that they got promoted to something they stunk at. What I don’t get is some guys get to repeat their mistakes over and over and over and over……

THEY WERE FIRED AS HEAD COACHES NOT COORDINATORS! Geez oh man! And sometimes it’s not because of the job they did but the talent they’re given! So, Chilly just got terrible after getting an extension after last year? My guess…Brett Favre is the main reason. And Buffalo was flat out talentless.

Childress was never a great coordinator in the NFL. He was the O-coordinator for Philadelphia, where Reid designs and calls the plays. Childress was the guy who taught the players what Reid wanted them to do. There was zero creative process on Childress’ part there.

Haven’t the Browns suffered enough already?

From these posts, the NFL is bulging with bad and/or underachieving players, and a gross plus a gaggle of misunderstood coaches who are so much better than the sum of their charges. Yet the underachieving players still remain after the coaches are gone. If the coaches are so good, why fire them instead of unloading piss-poor players with little-to-no talent?

Chilly isnt gonna take the job unless he can call the plays and as of now Shurmur said he is going to.Which is a HUGE concern for me.A first time head coach not just the nfl but anywhere to my knowledge calling plays in the NFL.Kinda surprised Heckert and Holmgren is letting that fly

Chilly would be a ‘programmatic non-fit’ whichever team he would end up with!

Head coaches have been play-calling for many, many years. Do you think Belichick stands there thinking to himself “I hope that Defensive Coordinator knows what he’s doing?”

Chilly has never done it well, even as OC at Philly. Reid never trusted Chilly that much. In Minnesota, Chilly said “we have a Kick-Ass offense” which meant he told the offensive coaches to come up with a kick ass offense. And then Chilly watched. If Chilly called any plays, he did it badly.

He knows the West Coast Offense. If you want anything else, don’t ask him to give to you. He really has a corporate mentality. Wilf hired Chilly after Tice because Wilf wanted a more corporate atmosphere, getting away from the buddy-buddy theme that Tice had fostered, which ran amok.

Childress succeeded in that his coaches and players did their jobs well. In 2009, Minny went far in spite of Childress, not because of him.

Chilly would be a perfect DB* coach.

Oh well at least Brian Daboll took his talents (cough hack weeze choke) to South Beach. I think Dora the Explorer would have been a better OC than Daboll. Childress cannot be any worse than Daboll.

Childress was an excellent coord. in Phila. Thats why he was offered the Vikings job. Andy respected him and did not call the plays for him your wrong. Peter principal is correct. It happens. I think Childress was a horrible Head coach. But as good as Marty was ( voted best asst of the year) Id take chill back in a heart beat.
